i purchased my used s3 about 2 weeks ago and notice everytime i accelerate smoothy i can hear a annoying sound which is quiet low to be honest and many passenger cant hear it but because i drive it everyday and i notice it when i push the pedal down and it ruins my experience a little but i dont know if its a normal sound like its a turbo or a fan or something but it only happens when accelerating , if you accelerate hard then the sound is covered
best way to explain the noise its like when metal lightly touches another metal while is moving for example low brakes pads and the plates are rubbing against the disks which create a sound but not as loud or as harsh as that

i was going to take it to audi but because its very low i dont think they will be able to hear it unless they lived with the car for a week or 2....in fact i dont think i am doing a good job of explaining it to you guys well too lolololol

Have a search on the forum for turbo wastegate rattle

Audi don't do anything as they say it is a 'characteristic' although it clearly isn't as it only affects certain S3... either that or certain owners can't hear it

thank you for pulling that out for me , however the sound i have is different to the one on the video plus on that video it only happens at the 9 second mark then the sound goes
mine is like as soon as i touch the accelrator pedal its there and is continual until i come off the pedal maybe it could still be in the same area 'the wastegate'
i feel better that it wasnt just in my mind and i have so direction towards what could be the problem

Does it happen only under an engine load condition only, all throttle positions, or even in neutral and revving the engine? If you have Stronic, put in drive, foot on brake pedal and press the accelerator.
From your descriptions it does not sound like a turbo issue.

hi flying scotsman , it happens everytime i set off from parked postion up till when the car going fast and the engine noise covers it up so i notice mostly when under 20mph and with light acceleration
when its in neutral there no sound, when am revving in parked postion no noise , i have not tried the brake and accelerator technique yet will try tommorow

I looked at the threads mentioned above and that may be the issue. The noise that you describe though sounds different, as similar to metal squealing, rubbing etc.
Those threads have me a wee bit worried though, as I am waiting delivery of a 2017 S3 and would not want that issue on my vehicle. Has anyone experienced that noise on a facelift S3?

I recall fixing a Golf GTI with a metallic rubbing sound whilst in motion. Turns out a metal shield was bent and rubbing the brake disc

This has got me worried: had the wastegate rattle on my MK7 R and it did my head in! Would be very disappointed to have it on my FL S3 :(

i went through all 11 pages and it seems extremely common
so many new a3 and s3 after 200+ miles started to get this noise
its been over 2 years and Audi know about this but have not even found a update or fix for it and say its a characteristic of the car but on the other hand golf r had the same issue and they all got a fix and the audi a3 1.4

i was hoping it was the brake so its a easy fix but only happens in gear and while accelerating

it will be interesting to know if anyone with a facelift have this problem

I have a facelift and not experienced the wastegate rattle and I know what I am listening for as I had it on my mk6 GTi.

I have a 1.8tfsi A3 and I get a screeching noise when I set off from standstill quite regularly.

Someone I spoke to suggested it may be a sticky brake calliper.

Anyone found a fix yet?

It's the turbo itself, )had this with mine months ago Audi finally agreed to put a new turbo on it after I recorded the noises on my phone. Try do the same thing.

Almost like crunching metal sound, I had it since day one. That and this weird knocking sound coming from the centre console area when the AC is on.

Characteristics of the car? More like negative externality of Audi design! Something has to give!!!!

I'm sure I've heard the watergate rattle on my FL S3, I had it on my A3 for a week or so before the supplying dealer replaced the modified clip.

Mine is going in Monday for a tracker, I will mention it then as I can 100% hear a rattle on the overrun.

That's not good: let us know how you get on.

SImilar sound on my saloon, best way to descibe it is like something swirling about in a tin can, only happens when you press the accelerator very faint but its there. Had this checked out by audi and confimed ( like every other annoying aspect of the S3) its a characteristic of the car.

i had this noise on my S1 so loud to the point i rejected the car.
they claimed it was a characteristic of the vehicle, but they couldn't show me another s1 that would replicate it. Baring in mind i was the 7th person to have one at the time.

anyway, i ended up getting an S3, to which they insisted i will get the same noise.

26k miles later - still no noise.

i can only say that its a defect rather than characteristic...

yes thats exactly what i hear , its so smooth the sound i feel most people wont hear it at first until your behind the wheel everyday and BOOM you can never unhear it again cant believe the golf r and facelift have a clip fix but not the pre facelift

Any further feedback from FL S3 owners re +/- wastegate rattle? I'm due to receive mine next month but have a test drive + inspection organised prior to accepting car to check for the rattle (had it on 1 of my 2 previous M7R's and not keen on having it again!)

hope it does have it , mine went into audi and they said it was brake pads which is bulls*** but could argue with them because they didnt bother clling me to say car is ready to collect and they were closing up :(
