Hi,

I currently have a Audi A3 2008 1.4TFSI Sport with 18 inch S-Line alloys. I was looking to upgrade to a 8V Audi A3 and wanted to know which 8V A3 would have comparable ride comfort. Would magnetic ride make any difference in the equation?

Thanks for the help.

I had an 8P and now have an 8V S-line wasn't that happy with the ride comfort so I changed the OME springs for MSS Kits Sport, very happy with the ride now.

... of course it makes a difference.

Most reviews of the A3 say it is better to delete the sport suspension if comfort is important.

Though there are a few things to consider: what are your roads like, how do you find your current car, your driving style, your passengers.

Get a few test drives. It is personal choice.

I had a 1.4tfsi 8P with standard suspension and ride was softer than my 8v 2.0 TDI s-line with sport suspension. It is well documented that 8v suspension was harder than the 8p.

For me ride was still ok, but you do have to test drive and see for yourself.

Interestingly enough I have standard S3, not mag ride, and it feels a little more compliant then my 2.0 TDI s-line with sport suspension

Note on pre facelift models there was 3 suspensions options on s-lines for first couple of years at least. SE, sport (which was standard) and s-line. Each was around 15-20mm lower or higher than standard sport suspension.

I'm pretty happy with the ride on my car right now. I wonder how a S3 with 18's and mag ride would compare to my 8P Sport with 18s. I'm guessing my car right now was firmer than your old 8P with standard suspension.

I jumped from an 8p quattro s line to my 8v S3 with mag ride and 19's and can say the ride is much better....This is just my opinion of course..

If I'm not mistaken Mag ride only comes with 19s.

I have a A3 Sport on standard Sport suspension which is absolutely fine on the terrible roads up here in Lanarkshire.

As has been said, go test drive a few and see what you think is best.

I've seen some of them with mag rides on autotrader etc. You can configure it on the Audi Car configurator and GSB in the thread I linked to said he's had 18s with mag ride PFL and FL.

I looked at the A3 UK configurator and it looks like you have to go to the saloon S line and then spec 19" wheels to get mag ride.

Its in the Equipment Options under Safety & Technology. From a quick look, you can add it to any A3/S3 apart from the 16" wheels (Checked A3 1.4 TFSI Sport with 17" and you could add it)

Can't argue with your experience, but every review I've read says that the 8v has much improved ride quality to the previous model.

I guess that might only apply to SE suspension though.

Ahem...

Quite right. I've had magride on two cars, both factory order 3 door S3's with 18's.

This is another of the commonly stated myths that needs banishing from these pages, like the one about haldex only reacting to front wheel spin, or pre facelift LED's being better than the xenon headlights. (For they record, they're really not. Combustion of some particularly robust flatulence is probably a more effective way to light the road ahead than Pre-facelift LED's)

This would roughly equate to magride, when it's broken. Broken magride makes the car a horrible thing to drive, but reveals just how much work the system is doing when it is functional.

Ride quality on magride is very good. Firm, but not overly so, unless you select dynamic and are pressing on a bit.
