Hi, recently i have had some problems trying to select 1st and reverse gear on my 2.0 tdi 140, 2006, it only happens every now and then, and if i select 3rd gear first, both 1st and reverse go straight in with no problem, then today when i was sat in traffic with the car in 1st, i noticed if i let the brake off the car started moving forwards, not fast, just as if the clutch pedal was raised a little, and ideas ???

Could be a leaky slave cylinder or it needs bleeding

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking that, there is no leaking from under the car whatsoever, I haven't had time to check on the fluid reservoir, it has had new pads and discs fitted on front by a garage before i bought the car, but not sure if they bled the system or not, fortunately it is still under warranty, bit annoying though as I only bought it 3 weeks ago

Theres two slave cylinders one on the gearbox and one on clutch pedel if theres no leaks more then likely needs bleeding good thing you have the warranty

I will buy a bleeding kit and see how it goes, cheers.

I have a 2.0 tdi and had to pressure bleed the clutch to sort it, if you don't have the kit to do it yourself may be worth paying for a break fluid change as normally under £40.

Hi guys, I have had the clutch bled and still no difference so took it to a gearbox/clutch specialist as well as my mechanic and they are both saying flywheel, has anyone had this problem before

When my flywheel was going I didn't have an issue with engaging the gear, I just had an annoying shake when moving off, especially after giving the car a harsh drive

is the flywheel noisey
not sure lol, the car does vibrate a little at tick over, also i have had a really bad rattly noise from the car before, but seems to have stopped now, and sometimes there is like a little thud noise when turning the car off

Could I ask where in the uk you are as could be the flywheel making it vibrate at tick over or could be timing out a tad, do you get any vibration or odd behaviour when 5/6 gear?

no, dont think there is any vibration in 5th/6th gear, there is quite a noticeable vibration if you press the accelerator when in neutral and let it come back down to tick over, i think its around the 2000 rpm mark, I am in leeds, I have booked the car in for gearbox stripping off, the dealer where i bought the car form is going halves with me for this, i do have warranty, so hoping if it does need replacing, they will pay, but not holding my breath

If you have warranty I'm confused why you have to pay anything at all?

You and me both, they are saying that the car needs stripping and assessing, then they will decide if they will pay it.

You need to stand your ground, the whole point of warranty is that whatever happens (as long as you didn't cause the problem) it should be rectified by the person/people who have given you the warranty, unless they stated the warranty doesn't cover gearbox etc.

Yeah thats what i thought, but after much carrying on about it with them, they are pretty much saying that if its wear and tear, then tough I have to pay, I have never bothered with a warranty before, just fixed the car my self, will have to see how it goes, cars not booked in for a couple of weeks yet, but I will be trying to re-coup the money from warranty, will let you know how it goes, cheers for the advice.

If it is the gearbox then that's not a wear and tear part, the clutch is but definitely not the gearbox. If anything try give trading standards a call to get some advice. But yes, keep us updated.

yes mate i will keep updating as things progress, I think if its gearbox it can only be the input shaft, but from my symptoms and if i was a betting man i would say possible csc fault, but there are no leaks so i cant see it being that, not sure if they can fail without a leak, or this is what the guy at the gearbox/clutch place said, he thinks the flywheel is occasionally not sitting flat if you know what i mean, and pushing on the friction plate hence not engaging it properly, but we will see.

After 3 weeks ownership. Look at sale of goods act if you have bought it from garage you have the right to expect goods of a reasonable quality. Cars are covered for 6 months in addition to any warranty supplied. This shouldn't cost you a penny to put right speak to your local trading standards to get all the information you need

thanks for the advice mate, yeah i will check that out

Any update on this mate?
Got a 140pd 2006 a3 too and got EXACTLY the same issues as you, with not engaging 1st/reverse but going to 3rd then frees up the gears. Car also very occasionally moves forward like you said when the clutch is fully down in 1st.
Fairly recently had a Sachs organic clutch and single mass flywheel fitted too so hope it's nothing to do with them as they weren't cheap!
Taking mine in for a service soon so any advice on what it could be would be appreciated!

My fault was caused by a few problems, first was a faulty flywheel, second was faulty concentric slave cylinder and third and last was something on the clutch pedal itself, mine has now been repaired, now waiting to see if warranty will pay for it, total price of job was £970.
