S3 AMK hints and tips!

50k is a long time between haldex oil changes IMO... based on the failure rate I would be doing it more often personally... filter can be changed at every other oil change... I tend to do my oil every 10k or two years (I do 4k a year in the S3)... the filter is the expensive item tbh, oil is around 12-15 for a tube...

Yeah completely agree....luckily for the year, the mileage is ok and it's a very clean car so I don't think it's been hammered. It'll be getting more consistent a service now it's in my possession!!

Exhaust = turbo back or cat back?

Turbo back of course!!
What are your thoughts on the hoses I mentioned before?

Also, I can't tell if it's the long or lat sensor that's kicking up the warning lights on the dash (esp and abs).....
Didn't get around to calling boys at garage today....however I did notice, on full lock, driving forward, a clicking noise, that goes as soon as off full lock. Any ideas?

Think its starting to begin this little journey of mine with the machine!!

might as well go stage 2 if you turbo back ;)

re hoses - biggest gain you'll have in upgrading is to get a silicone hose 3" TIP - the rest just look nice but if the budget allows then go for it :) but if going stage two hold back until you sort out a FMIC because you may only just need the upper hoses and not lower ones.

I would give the guys at the garage a call and ask for the fault codes cuz that'll tell you which sensor needs replacing.

I found today that the lights come on when accelerating hard rather than side to side movement (say, flinging it round a roundabout for example)....so that would suggest latitude sensor?
I'll be calling garage today.

Had a lovely run in the machine today out to the local coast and she ran like a dream. Very smooth and apart from the little niggles, which probably would even register on a normal persons radar, its spot on....I think!

Resisting the urge to buy buy buy hoses and charge pipe...really want to try and make sure it's all spot on before diving in too deep!

The 3 inch (oversized) silicon TIP is quite different to the standard and easy to fit. - why are you considering a new charge pipe - for looks or performance?

If you don't have VCDS why not get a Bluetooth adapter from eBay (about a fiver) and Android Torque (free or £2.67 for the Pro version - but don't believe the turbo boost pressure readings) - but to read the ESP / ABS dual lights error you have to have VCDS Lite as the Android Torque cannot read ABS errors, you can buy a cheap KKL Lead (which also works for fiat / alfa with multiscan) for about £5 and install a free (limited functionality) VCDS Lite system on a laptop.

The Sensor Errors usually occur at hard acceleration at about 55mph - I changed mine myself under the glove box - its a bit fiddly but simple enough. but there are two different sensors one is expensive and one is cheap and they have associated error codes.

Some people reckon just wobbling the sensor might help it - if something has knocked it - but it didn't fix mine.

Charge pipe: looks in the bay and I heard de-resonates gives better airflow and a different sound. I love hearing engines work...especially V blocks and turbo's.

Right so I'll look into getting the glove box one changed first as it's the cheaper? I'll go and have a look at it today, is it easy to access? I ****** hate electrics...I'm mechy all the way.
You're talking about Android, as in the phone Apps?! I'm Apple til I die sonny....any softwear on Apple I can use?
Maybe a wobble on the sensor will work...I'll give it a shake!

wobbling the sensor while reading with VCDS will tell you if it's dead or not that's for sure! Once you take the glovebox off you'll see it right under the A pillar. Torx25 are your friend

if you wanna hear the turbo best mod for that is an open cone filter - you'll be hearing all sorts with that :D

I expect there are Apps for IPhone too - although you might be better off with VCDS Lite as it includes all module code reads and a better accuracy, whereas the bluetooth odb2 are usually only ECU codes and sensors, but it has some cool graphs, dials and metres - and only takes a second to connect up.

When I changed my glovebox sensor the new one I received didn't come with the bracket so I had to carefully remove the existing bracket as the bracket is metal and the sensor is plastic, and there's a technique for getting it on and off - rather than just forcing it on.

Thats it back and finished. Looks well and has seen to have woken the engine up a bit i just have to get my exhaust then i can get my map tweeked so it all runs properly together. Now i need advice on what manifold and downpipe to get i have looked a Direnza but been told they have a habit of cracking and chinafold i cant find 1 for my car. I was told i should just keep my original manifold and get new downpipe, sportscat and millteck from cat back and i would get just as good benefit is that true?

Not looking hard enough mate...

On a std K04 then arguably but the OE mani cracks on the turbo mating face/collector so ultimately the chinafold would be more reliable (once ported of course)

O right didnt think it mattered that much but obviously some people think it does. I remember that nxt time.
Its nothing to do with what people think... Its forum etiquette and asking for advice on your own car in someone else's thread is a forum no no...

Thats how i thought it worked that u ask a question and post it up.

hydro s3,

Don't worry about it mate, I'm virtually as much of a noob as you (seem) and after seeing Tuffty explain a bit about etiquette did s small s**t thinking I may have done the same first off :tearsofjoy: It's all good! And the guys on here are the dogs at chucking out hints and tips, so stick with it, has helped me no end already as I start the journey that is owning a 8L S3!!

Still loving every second I'm in the driving seat. Then again it's only been a month on the drive...just about.

While I'm here...
How do I tackle the camber on the rears from the car being (previously) lowered? It's on Bilstein Coilovers...needs to come up ever so slightly on the rear (to satisfy my OCD on all things looking perfect) but I can't see that move sorting the camber as it wont be much....What's the fix on that? I dislike the negative camber look....

Cheers all.

Just added The Machine to the Gallery so you guys can see what I'm dealing with....

There was me thinking everyone had read the rules ;)

txt speak is a big no no on forums... its more of a problem now that a lot of people access the forum through mobile devices so the culture is txt spk..

Group buy (and other sections of the forum... yes there are others beside the 8L section although I don't know why as 8L is the most awesome ;) ) can be found by navigating to the forum home page and scrolling down to the trading post section... group buy forum is there..

However I couldn't spot the particular groupbuy/discount thread... so have a look here...

The fella is on the forum and is running the heat shields and inlet cover group buy thats in the stickies

Thanks again Tuffty...(if you had a quid for every thanks you get eh?!)
I will eventually get around to doing all the bushes and those tie rods for sure....pricey kit mind, well worth it though.

So I tried clicking the link in the Sticky you mentioned above:

Didn't want to play ball for me mate, how else can I get into it?

Well I've finally found my way back to the forum!! It's been a while, due to the arrival of my daughter and a few holidays, not much progress has been made with the S3…..but there has been some, so let me bring you up to speed, then open the floor to answers for my questions I need answering!!

So the S3 has been a near daily runner, back and fore to work and socially. Hasn't really missed a beat. Just hitting 100k, I needed a service and wanted the tracslag charge pipe fitted. Added to this I wanted to purchase a silicone TIP and get the car health checked…so where else could I take it?!!? none other than Bill at Badger5. First off, let me say what a really top bloke Bill is and seems to have good guys around him too. I drove up to Gloucester from my home in Pembs (the day before we drove to Luton to go on holiday…probably should have planned that a bit better..), to be there for 9am sharp. My S3 booked in for service, health check, smoke test, dyno and the parts fitted. So off I went to wonder gloucester for the day….On returning…not all news was good. It appears the S3 has some ***** map on, the turbo is a bit tired, the fuel pump is similar and that Im down compression on one cylinder. Pushing out 224bhp was a nice surprise, but not at the expense of boosting 22psi and terrible fuelling etc down to the ***** map.
So, driving away slightly unsure of where to go next (Bill gave me sound advice, but never wanting to do too much to the S3, as it was only a run about..I couldn't decide what to do…).

I have made some decisions, so here is where I ask of the forum for advice:

Firstly…I'm getting the turbo refurbed. I've contacted a company called Midland Turbo. They've quoted prices between £185 - £270 + VAT with free pick up and delivery with a turn around of inside a week. Does anybody know if these guys are good, or anybody have any other recommendations?

I think I'll pick up a new fuel pump. I'm assuming an OEM will do?

Next, suspension. The Bilsteins that came on the S3 are shot. So I'm going to go for shocks a lowering springs. I was just going to go with H&R with a drop of around 30-35mm? Now, this is in possible conjunction with a set of 18" AVUS from an S4, spacers front (approx 10mm) and rear (approx 15mm)… can anyone tell me if this is a good idea..correct lowering height etc…as I'll be on the original 17's initially.
The current set up on my car chewed through the rear passenger tyre, heavily on the inside. Rear driver looks like its going the same way, but not nearly as bad….is this purely suspension, or do I need adjustable tie rods, bushes etc?

The idea is to get the turbo off and refurbed, get the new fuel pump. Book the S3 back in at Badger5, trailer it up there and get turbo back on, new fuel pump, remove ***** map and replace with new from Bill and the boys.
depending on funds, I may get them to check the lower compression on the cylinder also.

Any advice on any of the above greatly appreciated.

Cheers in advance! Hope everyone is well!
