Reading posts here it seems Auto Start/Stop can be disabled (is this totally?). I would simply like to reverse the default - i.e. normally off, but I can still toggle it on with the button. Is this an option?

You cannot reverse the switch logic ;o(

VCDS can be used to permanently disable it however which is what I have done.

Same here. I find the Start/Stop does not work that well with the s-tronic gearbox so I've switched mine off permanently.

Actually I have the ability to reverse the switch, but only the lighting i.e. Orange (PFL) / Red (FL) light ON while SS System is Active and Off when Disabled. It's not a VCDS thing tho. The application I use has had a few updates to SS functions. Will have a read of the change notes to see whats now available.

Pretty sure the dealer wouldn't do it. It's part of the fuel consumption and pollution figures.

I really can't see the problem, but each to his own. :whistle2:

Thanks Richard, I presumed that would be the dealer response. It seems a bit stupid as I will be switching it off manually.

If you have s-tronic, you can just flip it into S when you come up to a situation where you don't want the engine to stop.

On the Canadian 2017 S3 there is a dashboard switch to turn off and on, there was no start/stop on earlier models. I just think it is daft that the dealer will not disable it if you are not going to use start/stop. It is just one more thing I am going to do after starting the car. I am practising the this procedure prior to the arrival of my 2017 car. :nogarors4:

PFL and FL have the switch on the Dash over in Blighty.
I have s-tronic and you get use to feathering the brake to stop it cutting in when at lights or in stop start traffic. If I'm in a big queue I do switch it off. Never tried the @RichardT method of going into S! Good shout will give it a go.

I think shoving it over to manual has the same effect.

Why turn it off? I say save the planet or at least try to do our bit. Also cities can have really bad pollution that is bad for everyone's health. Anything that can be done to help should be used.

It works really well and starts immediately. Seems weird to me now to be in a car that does not cut out. I have had 3 cars now with it.

I agree - it's fine with me.

The Mercedes ( a nice free upgrade from a Vauxhall piece of sh*te ) I rented at the Glasgow Airport in May had this feature...hated it...slow to engage and I think a huge wear on the starter and battery/alternator. If I wanted to save the planet I would not have ordered an S3. The diesel cars that are very abundant in the UK are not doing their bit as far as pollutants are concerned. That Mercedes I rented was a diesel and do not get me wrong, as I love the torque that diesel engines produce but as VW knows they pollute.

Audi (perhaps Bosch?) system is not slow to engage and despite your thoughts the components you mention will be engineered to work with stop/start.

Diesel (all) cars are polluting, that is why using systems like stop/start can only help.

If I'm stopped for more than a few 10's of seconds I'm ok with it. But all too frequently it needs to restart almost as quickly as as it stops, which feels 'clunky' and probably isn't too efficient either. Would be better for me if there was a steering wheel stalk option to be able to engage/disengage it a bit like the button which is a reach away.

If you know it's going to be a very short stop, then you can feather the brake so S/S doesn't kick in.

Auto-Off make sense when you're at the red-light but they will need to roll out the Traffic Light Assist to make it worth while so the Engine will know when to automatically startup before the green light....

nah, the idea is just dumb.

Audi should have made Cylinder on Demand standard for all trims. ;)

I also modulate my foot pressure once stopped (ease off but still hold) if I don't want it to kick in. I find it a good feature with my multitronic gearbox, also can confirm it is auto off in S mode.
The react time seems to be a bit quicker on my V6 diesel than my wife's 4cyl, both VAG
