I used to have a focus ST and I deresonated the exhaust on it to give it a little more burble and pop.

I was wondering if this is possible with my audi a4 avant exhaust.

any advice if anyone has done anything like this would be good.

thanks in advance

Do you have a standard system or a sports system on at the moment?

You can either fit a custom system and have it built to your requirement of noise or remove a silencer or two from the exhaust.

Yes it can be done.

Deresonated? Don't quite follow what you mean/did but mufflerectomys and straight pipes are quite common in the VAG world.

its a standard system. on the ST I removed the centre silencer and just replaced it with a standard piece of pipe.

assuming it probably the same with this exhaust then??

have seen that you can replace the silencer with dual resonators, could I just put in straight through pipe there instead of the resonators

Would these restrictions be in the 1.8T backboxes too? All the ones in that link seem to be diesels

Surgery to boxes , their removal etc always improvements available to do to a std system.

Well I'm giving it a go Saturday whilst fitting some 3.5" tips so I'll report back

The tips should look awesome! Sure, do report back its going to be well worth it either way! Keeping locked.:icon thumright:

So, i pulled the backboxes apart this weekend

Here's the resonators

Cut them out

Whacked in a straight pipe and stuffed with steel wool

Sealed her up

Then on to the tips, old vs new

All done

It sounds great, nice burbles and a couple of pops but quiet as a mouse if I drive normally

Also feels like it picks up quicker

Great work! Thanks for the info on the sound levels too. Always wanted to know what it would sound like when you 'play' with the backbox.

The new tips are way better than OEM in my opinion as i feel they are too small for the dual exhaust cavity.

I've previously removed the middle box too so that will have had an effect

Yer the standard tips do look tiny

very interesting all this.

Anyone tried it on lower power tdi's like 1.9?
How is it on emissions after the cutting out?

Good going! I heard those things are heavy?! So probably a good weight saver..very slight improvement on power to weight etc.

Sorry for the old thread bump ... But any videos of the outcome bud??

How was it with only the middle box removed too? Tinny?

Did I mention some videos would be amazing

Thanks

You're in luck, I did take a video after taking the resonators out but no before or with just the middle box out

Hopefully you should just be able to click the pic if I've done this right

Thanks for sharing & for the pm reply ! :)

Excited to be back in a b6, adding this mod to the list. Seems like it's still sounding quite oem but with the plus of some burble :)

Loving it! Will be my next mod.

What's the main reason for putting the steel wool in the box for?

its to muffle the exhaust noise , steel wool or rockwool , same idea .

Is it worth the delete of just one resonator?

Ie : leave the back box as standard

I sooo want to do this , but its the welding shut that's got me stuck , would need to find a garage , or keep practising with my stick welder lol :whistle2:

so just finished gutting one side and put the backbox back on and ..................... it sound the same !! lol god hates me lol , I am pulling it back of tomorrow to see how it sounds without it , should have done that first !.

just listened to that video up there and mines sounds hehaw like that , it just sound the same.

I don't see the relevance of the steel wool when the pipe it's surrounding isn't perforated, it's not going to do anything.

It's relevant, as without it, there'll be lots of resonance, and booming at highway speeds. Stock mufflers are also packed with wadding. Some aftermarket mufflers are packed with glass fibre.

I know stock ones are packed with whatever, my point being a stock exhaust has a perforated pipe with the packing round it, on the modded one the pipe is just a straight pipe, the exhaust gas will never pass through it, the exhaust gases are going straight out the back.

and thats why mine sounds standard , I put slits down the full length of the pipe so the gas could get into the rockwool , so mines vents into the packing , just need to do the other side now :racer:

Does it pick up better though? I wouldn't care about the noise being the same, stealth mode.

I think it does , lol but it could be in my head , I think my Cat is holding me back , so that's the next thing that's getting gutted , I now have a log of one mod , ie the back box , so as I go through them all I can see what difference it makes , just need to keep an eye on things as my injectors are maxed out at the top end at the moment .

Try doing this Jimmy http://www.passatworld.com/forums/v...ained-hp-port-matched-exhaust-pics-added.html

I've done a few and it does make a difference, picks up better and spools better due to more flow, it's not as breathless at the top end either. I had a spare exhaust turbine side for the turbo, I've opened that up as well, it all adds up.
It's quite bad how much material you have to remove on some of them, even better if you could get your hands on one of these BEX manifolds 06B 253 033AH they are bigger to start with.

last time I unbolted my turbo one of the bolts sheered , common problem and it cost me 120 quid to get it fixed :greedy dollars: , so the turbo is staying were it is till I Get a better one lol , just sticking to the easy mods just now , laptops and diy exhausts :friendly wink:
