has anyone used a HAAS fuel pump in a Stage 1 (and a bit) S3?

Hi,

So pretty sure the Fuel Pump is failing a couple extra engine rotations to start yesterday morning (which is new) and hesitation with a bit of a splutter when trying to accelerate past about 5K - absolutely fine under 5K even on boost.

euro car parts with a discount SALE30 code it is under £100

It looks like the old one needs to be taken apart quite a bit according to the guides in the stickies, GSF are very expensive even with a 42% discount.

mister auto sell a bit more of the pump for only a couple of quid more but is noted as 3 bar ? unless you buy the expensive one - is 3 bar plenty for 250hp?

I topped up the fuel and added some STP fuel treatment to see if that rectifies it, I might check to see if catch can is full but I don't think it is suddenly pushing oil through the turbo only at the end of the turbo boost range, the car feels like it does if it is running out of fuel, I already changed the filter last year.

There are no fault codes on the ECU (well occasional 420 but that is due to the sports cat heating threshold being exceeded)

Amazing 800 miles since the last fault was fixed - that's a record :)

I am looking at a 2005 Mazda 3 Sport tomorrow for more of a family car to fit the grandkids / dogs / suitcases / fishing rods and wife's oxygen tanks in for holiday. So if anyone has any experience on those - I would love to hear of things to look out for too. (I actually think a ASN user is modifying one on mazda3forums as I recognised his S3 and number plate in the background of a photo)

Thanks

S3 pump is 4bar... fit a 4bar pump...

...and make sure its the correct one for a quattro car too... FWD pumps are different...

Thanks, I reserved the HAAS and will consider taking the other one out tomorrow for comparison for when I collect.

hmmm with the write up's copied from forum to forum there are quite a few pictures missing now.

There is a discussion about an "in tank fuel filter" which you need to replace - but Tuffty contributed that it is included inside the new pump?

Also you need to disconnect the secondary pump from inside the tank, using the Audi's rather annoying quick release connectors does anyone know if this is a blind disconnection or whether you can see the connector?

Finally can anyone help with the part number for the fuel pump gasket, I don't seem to be able to find one in ebay, gsf or eurocarparts

Thanks

There are no gaskets on the pump just o rings that will come with the pump

when you open the cover under the seat you will see 3 connections.

2 quick connects and a electrical connection staring at you in the face
(here you can see the two quick connects,i've tucked the electrical connection under the carper (you will see what i mean when you do the job)

you will see in that photo above there is a white thing in the fuel - i think this is the feed from the tank on the other side. it must be pulled up and sideways (best way i can describe it) along with another small electrical connection and quick connect before you can remove the basket from the tank. the white thing is the hardest because it kind of hooks in to the basket but it must be done in the tank so you probably won't find any photos of it anywhere!

here you will see the O-ring on the bottom pump - there are two of that size (one top and one underneath) and then a smaller one which is underneath too but the inner O-ring. I reckon if you can find a place that supplies o-rings you would be able to bring them in and get replacements.

@dusty - Thanks for the reply, I am only buying half of the assembly if you know what I mean as I am only buying the pump and not the top bit too.

@Ian - Thanks, so I am buying the outer container of the pump so will not need to disassemble that part to get to those o-rings.

Thanks

Do I need to replace this gasket?

so if you are getting the pump what you get is the item with the corrugated hose coming out of it in the bottom photo

Yep, I edited my previous post - sorry our replies crossed over so the thread is a bit confusing now.

that's the unit in which your pump sits inside. see those silver screws? that is where that floating thing in the tank hooks and pushes down in to. (there is a gap between the fuel level signal sender plastic part and the rest of the basket in which the 4 silver torx screw in)

see where the bottom most hose is? follow it to the basket and you see a "flap" there are 4 of these that you need to undo which separates the two halves.

once separated (you will have a view like my 2nd photos with the 2 pumps)t he pump is able to be removed

I am already buying the pump and the pump housing together, I am sure it will all become obvious once I start taking it apart.

I just hate those quick release fuel pipe connectors, I needed to cut the one off by the filter, then when showing my neighbour they don't work it was working fine.

They're easy but just need coaxing.

I find a wide flat head screwdriver does the trick. Press the button all the way in , push the connection in first to unseat it, then pull out. Never had problems this way
