Front suspension creaks, is this a sign of a worn ball joint?

Hello there.
Have noticed that my front suspension creaks over small bumps and ripples on the road. Had a mechanic look at it and he said he could not find anything wrong. Another mechanic told me its the sign of a worn ball joint...could this be true?

Turned out to be worn drop links...just had new ones installed and hey presto silence!!
 
Finally solved the problem, turned out not to be the drop links but the retention clips on the brake pads..last Audi dealer forgot to put them back after I had the front disks and pads changed!!
 
It's sometimes the most simplistic of faults that are the hardest to diagnose.
Nice to see you got it sorted, and reported back.
