Hi everyone,

It's my first post here (go easy!), as I've recently bought a 2010 Audi A4 S-Line Limited Edition 1.8 TFSI (120PS) which I am in love with, here it is next to my mate's B8.5 S4 Avant:

Audi A4 S Line

Firstly, I'd just like to say this is my first german car and I ****** love it. Initial plans are for 15% window tints at the back, remap ~200bhp, then I'm going to leave it fairly standard after that (although I'm tempted to lower it 20mm).

Now onto the bit where I'm worrying a little. I picked the car up last week from a small dealer in Pontefract and my friend in his S4 convoyed home with me on an hour's journey. He mentioned on the way home (we were chatting on hands-free) that when I put my foot down to overtake there was a little smoke coming from the exhaust. We both agreed it was probably because it had been sat a while and not had a good run out. It was only a little bit and I couldn't see it in my rear-view mirror.

I took the car out the next day and came up to some traffic lights alongside a friend of mine (who incidentally owns a lovely SQ5), and he opened his window commenting how nice my car was. When i next saw the guy on Monday he pulled me aside and told me he saw smoke coming from my exhaust when I set off from said lights, and it looked like a faint tint of blue. This is where I begin to worry, the tailpipes I have noticed are also black with soot.

I took it in to my local mechanic (who is very good) and asked him to give the car a full service (which I had planned upon buying the car), but first said can he take a good look at the turbo before he does anything. He called me later and said they took off the pipes and there was a tiny bit of oil in there, but this is normal for turbo cars even though in theory there should be none, most have a little residue. I said does he think there's anything to worry about and he said "honestly, if you hadn't said anything about the smoke I would have never thought there's a problem with this car".

While that's quite reassuring, I'm still worried. The last thing I want to do is be slapped with a grand bill for a new turbo when I've just spent £11k on a car. It's something I can't really afford to be chucking around right now. As per consumer rights, I get a month's warranty with the car dealer, so if something's wrong I need to know very soon as I'm 5 days in. The dealer is about 1 hour 10 mins away so I need to be sure before going there with the car and leaving it with them.

Before I investigate any further, do you guys have any suggestions as to what else it might be? Do the 1.8TFSI's suffer the same oil consumption problem as the 2.0TFSI? Any help is greatly appreciated!

TL;DR: Bought an A4 last week, it's showing small signs of smoke when I put my foot down, only a tiny amount of oil found in intercooler pipes suggests nothing wrong. Still worried and need it sorting within 30 days warranty.

He's giving you a Batman smoke screen and he's behind the times as the 1979 Sales of Goods Act is superceded .

wow thats what I would expect a mapped diesel to look like, not a petrol.
Black smoke = overfueling, so look for deteriorated/cracked pipes causing vac leaks.

otherwise injectors or fuel filter.
Let us know what they do and if they sort it

That is classic piston ring wear unfortunately! Bet the exhaust tips are black and oily?
The oil consumption problem affects all the tfsi engines! You need to monitor your oil level first but I would be speaking to the selling dealer immediately as if it hasn't got a full relevant service history you will have a struggle getting the repair for free at Audi. This costs around £5500 before goodwill..

Blue smoke for oil, black smoke for fueling I am pretty sure.
Could be right, although I would expect blue smoke for oil fouling.

from the link above:

BLACK SMOKE
: Black smoke is normal for older diesel engines when they are first started or when they are accelerating hard, but there should be no black smoke is the vehicle is a late model car or truck with a "clean diesel" engine (electronic controls and high pressure common rail injectors).

Black smoke coming out of the tailpipe on a vehicle with a gasoline engine is a sign of a rich fuel mixture (too much fuel, not enough air). A brief puff of black smoke may be visible during hard acceleration when the fuel mixture goes momentarily rich, but under normal driving conditions and idling the exhasut should be transparent. If black smoke is visible all the time and the inside of the tailpipe is coated with heavy black carbon deposits, it would tell you the engine has a rich fuel condition.

looking at the video you linked, it seems very much like what is described above. Hope this helps.

My car exhibited the same smoking prior to the piston rebuild last year. Also remember that the catalytic converter is helping to clean these exhaust emissions and will certainly suffer some damage in the process.
Oil consumption would be the first thing I would check personally.

Thanks guys. I agree it looks like it's over fuelling.

I love the car but I'm honestly considering giving it back as I don't know if this is going to lead to further problems in the future. I'd lose the £250 I've spent on a full service which is frustrating though. Unsure as to what to do :(

If its a tinge of blue its the unfortunately common piston rings.

Why don't you do like i've read others do on here. Take it to Audi dealership they will do a top up of oil seal the bonnet let you drive and take it back to them.

If its used more than a certain amount (can't remember what it is!) they will do a full rebuild. If you have full service history its completely free if not then its £500.

I would do that. Don't bother giving it back if you like it.

Thanks for the advice guys. It's going back to the dealer on Tuesday and they are going to plug in the diagnostics and hopefully identify what is going on. I'm not going to let them p1ss me about, and if they don't fix it 100% I'll just get my money back and have done with it.

I'm personally convinced that it's just over-fueling so hoping it's either a bad map or some kind of sensor, that way it will be a quick fix on their part and I can go and enjoy the car. The car itself is low mileage for its age (10 plate with 53k) and has been reasonably well taken care of by one owner (you can see by the interior, paintwork, wheels, etc) and with it being the 120ps I don't think it has been ragged about all over the place, so fingers crossed the engine block is in a good way. As I say the smoke seems to be black and not blue too so that can only be a good thing (hopefully!)

Piston rings mate. Also affects the 1.8tfsi. I had mine rebuilt at 32k
Still got the issue though. I would reject the car personally and get something else no matter who nice the car looks

Hey thats good to know I too contacted Audi garage in Wolverhampton today and they told me if your car consumes 1 liter per 600 miles that's perfectly fine

and I asked them why does it consume oil and they told me that's how the engine is made ????

I appreciate if you could give me any advice on the matter I'm sick of all ways worrying about if there's enough oil in the engine or not..?
