hi all I did post this on general auto discussion but no one could help so I'm going to post it here :) I've nearly payed my a3 off and wanted to upgrade to an a6 c6, I've always drove manual cars with a gear stick but I want to try out the paddle shift and have the convenience off the auto function, my question is which is better tip or multi, I've read a little bit about each on the Web but didn't really help and i wanted to know people personal experience with each, and also common faults, which is smoother, reliability etc, thanks for any info as there still fairly expensive cars and want to make the right choice thanks in advance.

Book a test drive for both and see for yourself . I have tiptronic on mine and it was a good choice . Very smooth and paddles are good addition.

Multitronic is a horrible gearbox imo

I had a B6 A4 Multitronic, which was the first iteration of the Multitronic gearbox. I now have an A6 C6 with the tiptronic box. As far as I know Multitronic is not available with Quattro so if you want 4WD then tiptronic is your only auto choice. I found the Multitronic to be very smooth and I would imagine that the fact that you have a practically infinite range of ratios between minimum and maximum would also have an efficiency gain. All the info I have gleaned from my local specialist has led me to the conclusion that the tiptronic is generally more reliable than the Multitronic. I would agree that a test drive of both would help you to decide.

Also worth noting that the Multitronic (or at least the version I had) requires an oil change every 40K miles. This was about £100 extra on top of the service at my local specialist.

Get a tiptronic for piece of mind. Get it serviced (oil and filter change) every 50k miles and it will last for ever.

I have a 2010 A6 2.0TDI 170bhp with the multitronic CVT with paddles and compared to other auto's I have driven I find it to be very smooth when driving normally in D and I barely feel gear changes. Floor it and it feels quite laggy again very smooth gear changes. Also read some bad things about the multitronic with reliability.

My car had a new gearbox at 11,000 (previous owner had the problem) if your cruising around its fine, if you want to put the boot down its ok but that is my opinion. Pulling out of junctions I put it in S so I dont get the lag that I get in D. 1 second delay in D picks up slowly, S mode is a lot more quicker and hardly any delay.

I have had the car a month and have done around 1200 miles and I still use the paddles but they can be annoying because if you interfere with the changes it stays in manual mode for quite a while unless you change the gear selector from S to D to make it go back to full auto then back to S if that makes sense i.e overtaking or dropping down a gear.

As someone has suggested, 40k mile service intervals. Audi in Kent quoted me £199 a couple of weeks ago which includes VAT.

thanks for the replies everyone my phone didn't give me any notifications like it usually does so had no idea people replied will read them all thanks again.

reading through the comments and looking on the Web I think I'm going for the tiptronic, it'll get serviced at each interval needed as I take care of all my cars regardless of price and I feel from what I've heard and read it's the more reliable box, I'll test drive both to make up my mind but I think it's going to tell the tipronic :) thanks all

As you are looking at the 3.0 then the only choice is manual or tiptronic, multitronic was not available on the 3.0 engines.
