After my car blew up a couple of weeks ago I went looking for an A4 / A6 second hand (budget of around £8000). I spent days scouring the internet and finally found my perfect car, an A4 2.7 TDI S Line in monza silver (extras including B&O, Sat Nav, Full Leather). Car is high mileage but well maintained with FSH (including gearbox oil changes) and drives absolutely perfect (minus CEL on) dealer (non audi) stated that it is swirl flaps and they will be done before taking delivery.

Spoke to the dealer just now (10 days later) and he has still not had car repaired, he has advised they have spent around £1000 in parts so far and still need a few days as more parts coming in. To be fair to them they have offered a courtesy car but tbh I can't be bothered with the hassle of getting there to get one (it's a fair way from me) and I can live without for now, but dealer did say today that he is nearing the end of what he can justify spending on it and if I want to cancel the deal I can with no penalty.

I have looked and tbh nothing comes close to this within my budget and location (plus it is through finance so limited to dealers only and even then only certain ones approved by finance company) I don't mind waiting a bit longer for the car even though I am absolutely itching to get into it I would rather this be dealers problem and I get car coming to me sorted.

What is likely fault with it? As it stands I am very tempted that if he can not get it fixed / runs out of money I put in an offer to buy it as spares & repair (I am happy to get up to my elbows in oil) but worried if their garage is having trouble is there something more to worry about? They have not been specific about what has been done so far but from conversations we had they have replaced flaps and linkages then replaced motor (no idea what current extra parts they have ordered are) apparently it had an audi health check and that was only issue from them. Is there much more to the swirl flaps than this? From everything I have researched so far most people seem to have fixed them by changing the flaps and linkages only, none have seemed to have any further issues.

Cheers.

I don't know that specific engine but if swirl flaps, linkages and motor have been replaced then that's the whole lot done! If they are still waiting for parts then that's likely for some other problem. To be fair sometimes it is necessary to fix one thing before you can find out that something else is wrong. I'd be inclined to give them more time, especially if you really like the car. However if you do buy you should insist on getting a copy of the work schedule to you have a record of what was done, in case you need to go back in the first few months of ownership.

I would be wary of this tbh, starting to sound less than honest or desirable

That was my thought didn't think there was much more to them...

Tbh I understand they want to do it cheap as possible so will be ordering one bit at a time so does take a while, don't know if it is case of they have tried just doing one bank as well and now having to do second that's what extra bits are.

Tbh do feel inclined to walk away but it's a beautiful car and once done it's done... Could go pick up a different one that's running fine today but the flaps are a few hundred miles away from failure, such a tough decision.

I know you can't trust a dealer but he came across genuine I think it was because of delays and knowing I could probably get finance company to cancel deal anyway which would affect his standing.

I think I'll just hold out till the weekend now and see where it stands. If I don't get it till Saturday at least I won't have to pay for this month's tax ;)

i have to agree with @Gazwould sales men will always make it sound like they are doing you a favour, and by offering out it actually gives them a chance to sell at a higher price to someone else now that the parts cost has eaten their profit.. If you dont get the car off them because of time.. someone has to buy it, they wont just leave it or sell the same price :p
Dont do them the favour if it is the one you want, sit and wait for it to be ready and smuggly walk away with a new car having had the work all done :D (unless it seems like it has other engine damage or a non declared crash repair you see signs of)

When i got mine from the dealer then on the day I backed out the finance and paid cash, he made out they wouldnt of made a penny and infact it would be negative profit and refused my money which was asking price!.. till my friendly bank manager called and told them it was illegal and they had took the cash, they took away the free servicing too (buttholes) way the sales man spoke it was like I had bankrupt their busines..
I used to work in Nissan sales floor before uni.. I know it is all rubbish and seen every line lol

All these car salesmen who claim to make no profit all sit in lovely showrooms with heating and lighting on, must get them all for free.

They all couldn't lie straight in bed. The way to think about them is
They are trying to steal your money and you have to stop them stealing as much as possible.

awesome news mate.
i bought a 2.7TDI with 150k on the clock last January and had loads of problems at first with cv joints, swirl flaps and other things I've blocked out of my memory. tbh i wanted the car as its looked lush and was the sline with the bigger engine and was a b8 but i only had 8k grand so in the end i have a lovely looking car that looks like it cost 12-14k and is now mechanically sound.

Good luck to you and i hope you enjoy the car.

is yours a multitronic? if so let me know what you think of it.
i hated mine at first but its something you get used to

Thanks :) yeah this one is 140k but drives spot on and I'm not afraid to get hands dirty.

Tbh was originally looking at the 2.0 but as soon as I drove this knew it had to be this one.

Yeah it's the multitronic... That was biggest worry buying such a high mileage but will see if gamble pays off

60 mile drive home was nice, multitronic is definitely different lol and deceptively fast when accelerating slowly... Come through some roadworks at 50 they ended and I'm just keeping up with car in front feathering accelerator getting the hump because we are going so slow until I look down and doing 80... Would have sworn we'd only got up to 60 max!

Were there any other brakes fitted as optional extras? My front calipers look huge and according to myaudi.com it has 8 pots at front? I was getting small vibration on braking nothing too bad but puts brakes on the list of things to do.
