OK bit of a long one, but it did worry me at the time and since!

I've just come back from a week in Scotland with the wife, last Thursday we had driven to a coastal village with a car park just on the outskirts of the village to do a 5 hours coastal walk. As I entered the car park the first half was busy with SUV's, estates and a lot of dog walkers, so I went to the second half and parked next to a brand new Zafira, which was the only other car parked there.

We did the walk and as we came back into the car park the first half was almost empty, we walked towards where I had parked and I could see my car as the Zafira had gone. As we got closer I noticed that there was a VW Passat parked close on the other side of me, my first thoughts were "WTF has he parked so close and out of the way when the entire car park is almost empty?". As we got closer I noticed that there was a very dodgy looking bloke slumped down in the drivers seat! As soon as he saw us he looked a bit shocked, sat upright, picked up his mobile and called someone!!! Straight away I had a bad feeling, so I gave the rucksack to my wife and told her to stay where she was. I went to the back of the car and changed out of my walking boots and into my trainers, all the time watching this guy who in turn was watching me whilst he was still on the phone! I got in the car and drove over to where my wife was, I told her to throw the rucksack on the back seat and get in quick and not to bother taking her boots off.

As we were leaving the car park a BMW with two blokes inside turned into the car park and looked straight at us, again I felt uneasy and even my wife picked up on what was going on. Less than a mile up the road the BMW came blasting up behind me, I slowed down to give him the option to pass, he didn't, he just sat back about 50 yards from me! When I accelerated he did, when I slowed down he did, but always staying 50 yards behind! I waited until we got behind another car and just sat there waiting for the right time, as soon as I saw a sign saying bendy road for 2 mile I booted it past the car in front (last straight before the first bend) knowing that the BMW (if following me) didn't have time to catch up and pass before the first bend. I then continued to drive briskly through the bends and back to where we were staying. I didn't see the BMW again, but it got me that paranoid thinking about what had happened that I pulled over before going back to the cottage and checked under the wheel arches and under the car to make sure no tracking device had been stuck on!

With a new car no matter what you get you always have the worry of where you park in case it gets damaged etc. but with a high performance car you also have the added worry of it being stolen! I'm not so much worried about the car, as it's fully covered with GAP etc. and I can look after myself if something had kicked off. My main concern which I keep thinking about is my wife, I'd hate for her to get hurt for the sake of owning a fast car. To be honest the experience has put me off getting another sports car a bit, I'm thinking maybe going for something more run of the mill/practical and less attractive to the wrong sorts. I know this may have just been all innocent, but the sequence of events just didn't feel right and it keeps going around in my head....especially the question "What if we had got back 5 minutes later and all three blokes were there trying to take the car?!?!".

Who knows what might have happened, and it could have all been innocent. I think you did exactly the right thing, and can understand from what you say why you felt things weren't right. I think I would have been tempted to drive straight to the nearest police station, and see if they followed you there. If you had the reg numbers and details, probably still no harm in reporting it.

Really sorry to hear this story, but I think your cautiousness was definitely justified.

Yes I agree if you have the cars details report it to the police and at least its logged .

Well dodgy , time to invest in , 2 channel cameras , steering wheel lock and obd port protection ?

Early in I just thought poor Passat man really liked S3's and was knocking one out.

Not paranoid at all, good call, though I'd have not taken the time to change and would have put the sat nav on route to the nearest cop shop.

It was in a car park at Rockcliffe, SW of Dumfries. Don't have the cars details as the front and rear cam footage has been covered on the loop, I didn't think about saving it in the emergency folder at the time. On a positive note the car handled superbly as I threw it around the twisty bends at speed ;)

I was parked roughly where the red arrow is (from Google maps)
Cp

The coastal walk was fantastic though and well worth a visit (in a van) :p:

The roads round Dumfries and Galloway are really good, I take it you went back towards Dalbeattie and not round the shore road to New Abbey .
Watch out for the scamara vans and unmarked Bmws and Audi police cars mostly on the main euro route A75 but also on other roads at all times ..
I would deffo go to the cop shop and log your suspicions and they should contact D and G Traffic and let them know and they may have previous reports , the info could be crucial .....
One Golf R was stolen locally a few weeks ago the scum broke into the house and took the car , The cops had it on cctv heading to Glasgow at 0730 am . They got the car back but couldn't charge the driver with the theft though .
Please don't be put off having another super sporty car .

Think you did the correct thing buddy. However, I wouldn't let it put you off having a nice car. As you say you have the appropriate insurance/gap cover. I would take some of the advice above and get a steering lock etc just for reassurance.

100% potential theft there, no other legitimate reason for their shenanigans and from what you described it sounds like you got back to your car in the nick of time (pardon the pun) ;)

Report it mate, although I doubt you'll get much from it, and keep a looksy for those dodgy characters/cars.

Beautiful scenery by the way :)

Agree, fantastic photos. :) To be honest, they sound pretty amateurish, or just a bit stupid. @S32B - do you not have "Tracker" stickers showing on your car? It definitely pays to be vigilant and aware tho.

Had to get the boots off, no way I could drive in those lol.

No I went right towards New Abbey/Dumfries, the opposite way to where we were staying, then went back along the A75 to Gatehouse of Fleet. I needed fuel so thought I'd fill up and try the Tesco high octane stuff, I knew where there was a Tesco in Dumfries...it seems good stuff as well, the car felt just as eager if not more so than using vpower :)

What are all the blue cameras on the A75, average speed cams or just monitoring cams? I did see the van out one day and let a few bikers who were heading towards it at speed know ;) The owner of the cottage we had warned me about the police on the A75, so I sat at 60 when on it...which was a pain as it's so tempting just to floor it on the big long straights :) Not to mention if you get stuck behind a wagon doing 40 you end up going over 60 to pass it quickly, so always run the risk of getting zapped if you pass at the wrong time...makes people worried about overtaking!!! The other thing that was annoying was my dash cam has built in speed camera locations, it kept going off on the A75 yet I saw no fixed cameras where it said they were!!! have they removed a lot of them?

Yes mate, had a couple of comment from friends "When did you get the tracker fitted" :D So makes people think!

Zoomed in from a pic I took last week:

I disagree here.
I don't think a thief would have parked right next to your car in the middle of the day as it's too obvious.

And once you were gone they wouldn't chase you to draw attention....they would just go looking for another car to nick.

I reckon the BMW was not related and just wanted to race you.
Not sure what the guy parked near you was about......Maybe parking out the way to have a snooze?

That sounds well dodgy, you did the right thing by telling your wife to wait while you got sorted at the car. Hope you and the wife are ok. It sounds like a really scary experience.

I agree with the others above.

1. You were right to be vigilant.
2. Hopefully it was just coincidence that the various things made it appear suspicious (thankfully you didn't find out by your actions)
3. I'd have headed to the police station.
4. Getting their reg. would've been handy but in the circumstances hindsight is a great thing.
5. Don't be put off nice performance cars because of this type of rare incident.

Enjoy your car mate!

lol did I forget to say it was a naturists coastal walk? Boots were the only items being worn :D
Well yes you did forget that important detail. Now all the guys will have some pretty clear images in their head with your wife in boots only. Some of them may even think of you, lmao now. :) X

I understand this is S32B once he got changed in the car park after his nude walk ! :)

I think we can understand why he wasn't keen to pop into the local police station to report it....

The blue stalks are sat nav related as far as I am aware .
As for the wagons doing 40 mph there must have been an unmarked car sitting somewhere as most of the wagons do not do 40 more like 50 or 60 and it does take a good run to get passed in fact nowadays I sometimes don't bother and just sit behind them if they are going ok

After a bit of a Google I found out that the blue cameras are traffic cameras not speed cameras. Apparently there are no fixed speed cameras on the A75 :)

Yeah, I'm sure they measure traffic flow etc and feed back to the systems where you see green, Amber, red on the map highlighting any issues to allow you to reroute.

Your car had been spotted. The guy was waiting for his 2 dickhead friends in the BMW to show up to seal the deed on your car. He saw you, panicked and called them in a hurry hence the stare from them when you left. They knew your car was now out of reach! They followed you to give you a little scare...
Glad it turned out ok and you did all the right things! But agree you should report to the police. You never know. ******* parasites...

lol I made sure there was a big gap for doors fully open, but not too big for a car to slot in between us ;)

if that was me I would pull over and park for 3 mins.
ive been in that situation in the past.

Why 3 minutes? o_O

I just had a little scare, the ONE time I chose to ignore someone turning in with me, the ONE time...

I turn in, car turns in, I turn again, car turns, I turn to a dead end, car turns, as I go up the road, car stops, waits, I get to the end and pretend to be parking up, car comes at me with pace, I quickly reverse, car slows, moves over to the side with lights off. I go past, couldn't see a thing in the car nor remember the plate. I drive on, he turns it round but doesn't catch up...

Then...
101 don't care
Crimestoppers don't want to know
I didn't want to ring 999

I drive about for an hour, go past the road and they are STILL there.

Few mins later...gone.

What a f'ed up night.

Trust your instincts, the ONE damn time I decide not to ....
