Hi Everyone,
i have recently bought a modified 56 plate 2.0T FSI quattro S line special edition running MRC stage 2 remap so around 270bhp/420NM with fmic, exhaust, hpfp internal upgrade. The car now has 120k on the clock and full service history and has had things like the pick up pipe and pump replaced and looks like it has been well looked after but i have a couple of questions after a month or so of ownership.

firstly sorry for the questions which i am sure have been asked time and again, but is the BUL engine renowned for using oil? my understanding was when i bought it that this wasn't the case on these particular engines but mine is definitely using oil, i think it has used around a litre in 2.5k since i bought it. so is this normal or is it a sign of another issue?

2nd question, are the oem cam followers the best option when they need replacing or are there so better aftermarket upgrade versions? Also where is the best place to get a stud conversion kit for allowing easier and safer removal and refitting of the hpfp?

Thanks

Dave

firsty, welcome onboard and welcome to another 2.0tfsi special edition owner you'll find that there are a good selection of similar owners on here so you will get a good selection of answers to any question posted.
I'm not expert on the subject but from my experience so far here is my input.
To help with your first question, the simple answer is yes the BUL engines do drink , oooops, I meant consume a fair bit of oil, some more than others frankly and if you are running a few extra bhp then it will certainly use more, but no more than the other 2.0tfsi's.
you say a litre over 2,5k miles, that's not excessive to be honest as audi state a standard tune engine can use upto 500ml per 1000km , if driven hard.
My BUL was drinking oil and certainly more than audi specified at 30k miles , had a new motor fitted and it still uses a fair bit, but I check it everyweek and i'm not too bothered about it now, changed to 5-40w ester based engine oil a couple of weeks ago and things have stabalized a bit now so that has helped things.
so I think you well within operating guidelines even moreso as your running stage 2 .

OEM cam followers on the BUL were better than others but still not ideal, most new OEM ones now are a revised part and are much better, if you change it now that should be it, changing to studs wont do much unless you plan on replacing on a frequent basis.

hope that helps a bit.

Thanks for the reply that answers my questions
Having run a modified 1.8t for the last 10years and a 2.0tsi for the last 18 months neither of which used any oil (well until the chaintensioner went on the tsi) it has come as a bit of a shock when the oil light came on after only 1500 miles will keep an eye on it and get plenty of oil on order
With regards to the follower i believe it was changed when the hpfp was upgraded less than 18months ago so will check it an see ehat condition is in. I had heard that people were checking these at every service for wear, so if it was coming off that often i think it makes more sense to run studs to save stripping the threads on the bolt holes in the engine...maybe i am being over cautious from hearing too many horror stories by checkin it so often cheers for your help

Mine used to drink oil for fun, same rate as yours. Bit of further investigation and I pinpointed it to an oil leak at the back of the engine and allover the gearbox!

It was the vacuum pump that sits on the end of the camshaft. There was a revised part as they were known to blow their seals.

I managed to pick one up off eBay for £50 luckily.

Mine hasn't used hardily any oil since.

Hope it helps!

Hi guys,

My BUL was also using alot of oil and was noted to be the Vacuum pump to the top rear of the engine, (rightly said over the gearbox). this was also giving a ticking noise on start up, if you notice this, I suggest that this could be a contributing factor to your oil consumption.

I am also running at stage 2 so fully understand the concern, these Audi's seem to love drinking the black stuff.

good luck

do know the correct part number for the pump, both numbers I tried are no longer available.

I wonder if they have been superseded. I will fire up etka tonight and check for you.

The one I have fitted however is 06D145100H
