Ok i have found as of late strange corrosion lines forming on and around my gearstick and ashtray cover. I think on the doors also. It's like corrosion is starting on the alloy trim under the lacquer anyone know what im on about.

And if so, how do i resolve it, polish it out? Will post some pics.

May be a previous driver/passenger spilt a drink over it or over zealous cleaning, who knows. You could either change them for new items, have a go at rubbing them down and re-polishing or wrap them in a vinyl wrap of your choice. I would just go buy new ones to keep it standard but these brushed aluminium trims are expensive. One door trim is £76 last time I bought one Ouch!
You could have a go at rubbing down &polish and if it doesn't work out, wrap 'em up at minimal cost.

It's a known problem with audi aluminium trim. The corrosion is underneath the clear coat. Your best best is to wrap with vinyl

Thanks Chaps hmm i can't stand vynil wrapping esp the carbon fibre look etc looks so chav :( im an old git i like my Oem original look.. hmm, about to sell my beautiful so maybe just let someone else deal. Thanks for responding.

I was in the same boat with mine. I decided to try some brushed aluminium vinyl first as it was a much cheaper option. Turned out better than I thought and you have to look very closely to tell the difference compared to the ashtray lid. For £6 and an hours work I cannot complain.

Where did you get the material from?

Nice one Jay that looks really good, did you have to do the ashtray cover also to prevent mismatch.

Ok I got the vinyl but I can't get the gear knob off. I take it the silver clip underneath the gator holds the knob on? How do you take the clip off without breaking it or do you have to force it off and then replace it?

The clip will need to be braked and then fit a new. However, you should be able to remove just the the plastic and not the entire gear knob.
