Hi folks.

I'm looking at changing my current A3 TDI (170) to the 2.0TFSI petrol. Having owned diesels for almost 20yrs I'm apprehensive about the change. What are people getting in terms of real world MPG?

What's the engine like? Anything I neex to be aware of?

I'm grateful for any info. TIA.

Dave.

Its a new engine using the miller cycle so not much is known about the it in the A3 aside from it is the same as fitted to the A4. As I've not come across anything pertaining to the A3 there are some owners of the A4 that have had experience of this power unit so it might be useful if you have a look over at the B9 A4 forum...

Had a 140tdi then a 200tfsi now back to 150tdi. TFSI returned at best on motorway with cruise control on 37mpg, 25/28 in city without booting it with 330miles per full tank. TDI currently have is better obviously on mpg as you would know but i miss the long gears and the extra power from the petrol in the rev range higher up. TFSI also have the cam follower and some of them have the n80 valve that likes to play up. Other than that i love the engine.

Good idea about looking in the B9 A4 area. Thanks.

Interesting to hear about the real world MPG figures. 330 miles to a tank is going to be a shocker when I'm used to 550! That said, I only do around 7k miles so it wouldn't make that much difference in terms of ££.

I drive a 220hp TFSI and it has plenty of vroom. Gets 0-60mph in 5.8 secs.

Hope Audi update the A3 2.0T and S3 here in the Americas with the facelift. Might not happen until the next gen though.

I can only imagine what the new 252hp 2.0T of the A4/A5/A6 engine would do to my A3 2.0T.

It probably would be hitting 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds like a BMW 228xi ;)

and when you think about it. The A3 should be at that level right now as a car to outpace the 2-series. Come on Audi bring that new 2.0T engine down to the A3 class.

We in the UK will only be getting the 190ps on the A3, as far as I know at the moment, not the 252, so any comparison isn't really useful in spite of it being the same engine, but the A4 does. With the 190ps A4 owners seem to be getting around 35+mpg...

Is it just me who finds it frustrating that the A3 is putting out 190ps, whereas the Golf GTI is 220ps or 230ps with the PP upgrade.

Haven't looked but imagine that with Quattro specced the traction would compensate enough for pub bragging rights 0-60. But the 190 isn't sold as a GTi kinda car anyway, so not really a valid comparison.

Quite, but is the Golf engine the more recent miller cycle version? Also, as it is apparently the exact same engine as the 252ps, it should be easily possible to extract that..

If the 190 was in the SE or the Sport, I'd agree, but IMO the S-line really should be pitched at the GTI level.

This is a good point. I'm not 100% sure but my guess is that it's not. 252ps sounds more interesting!

If the A3 here in the West was offered with just 190, or as it was when I was shopping for one a 1.8T at 170 only.

I would probably be an A4 owner right now.

Those numbers just looked way too low. But now I know the 1.8T A3 at 170hp is actually faster in 0-60mph than an Lexus IS-250 with the old 208hp V6 engine.

I take delivery of mine on Thursday.
I'll post an update.
Torque on new engine is almost the same as the 2.0tdi but over a wider rev range.
I drive an old TT 2.0 Tfsi and love the engine.

@Brumbrum1... how long have you been waiting?

Hope the rest of the week goes quickly for you. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it.

Yes, this is one of my huge frustrations with the 8V. Even with the facelift the best non-S3 petrol is fairly poor, and the Golf GTI engines are not available.

I know how you feel. I have compared the facelift A3 with the BMW 3 series and in general they are not too far away from a comparison eg 14ft 8 or so long plays 15 ft 2 inches but comparative rear space plus an equivalent spec ( the A3 cannot give me memory electric seats unfortunately).

However I can get a near bottom of the range 320i at 180 hp or so, a 330i at 250 hp or so or go mad and get a 340i at 326 hp. (mind strangely only the 320i is 4 wheel drive in UK).

The comparison on the A3 is the low 187 hp or even lower unless I go to S3. Its the 330i comparison on engine power that is missing . I'm hoping that BrumBrum can help on this when he gets his 2.0 tfsi. The hope is that the 330i 0-62 time of 5.8 secs is very close to the 2.0 tfsi quattro time of 6.2 for the lighter car so there's not much in it on sheer smoothness and performance.

I see the A4 as more of a direct comparison to the 3 series.

that's right.
The A3 competes with the 1 and 2 series

OT: The New A4 looks big as a boat now, is it still classified as a compact exec sedan or has it moved up to Mid-Sized, being an equal to the A6, which will probably get enlarged once the 2018 A6 model come out to fill the full size sedan void left by the A8 now that Audi is only making the A8 in Long form.

Fair point Ken but I've always garaged my car after a spate of Tyneside burglaries some years ago. The 3 series saloon and A3 saloon will fit - the A4 won't now fit in its current version. So I see it as the A3 2.0 tfsi saloon or the BMW 330i possibly.

Interestingly I read a number of A3 and S3 reviews from the States. to them a car under 16 feet is small anyway and they were so taken with the A3/S3 sedan that they wondered whether the A4 was relevant anymore!

Before the B9 A4 came out here, the A4 was looking irrelevant, almost as if Audi was going to replace it with A3 .

But now the B9 A4 is here, Audi USA is now touting the car as their biggest technology accomplishment (despite it still can't do half the things that Euro A4 can do like Self-Parking, Matrix Headlights, Headlamp washer, etc.) They completely forgot all about the A3 being the small car with big car technology.

Audi has gone one step further and announced the B9 A4s with Audi Connect will soon be able to determine the time remaining of traffic signal light turn from their cars, so drivers will know how many seconds they have left before the green light goes red.

^ that really gets me because I wonder why can't A3 Audi Connect users get that function. Audi Connect is really worthless. I noticed the Navigation is fully functional without Audi Connect either, you just don't get Google overlay and Google search.

Can anyone confirm if the 190ps and 252ps versions of the 2.0tfsi have the same mechanicals, with the only difference being the state of tune ( ie software)?
