Rogue clear pipe; scuttle between heater pipes?

I was cleaning out the drain holes beneath the battery and brake servo today and found some narrow, clear pipe that came out of a hole in the bottom of the panel (i.e. roughly above the gearbox) in between the two heater pipes. It didn't seem to go anywhere, although there is also an empty clip of the right sort of size on the back panel (by the windscreen).

It's a slightly larger diameter than the windscreen washer pipes and seemed to have been partially protected by black plastic covering, although this had come off.

Does anyone know what this might be? I've removed it all now and nothing seems to have changed. If anyone has a good photo of the scuttle around the heater pipes that would be really helpful. The car is a 2000 1.8T.

Cheers.

most decent batteries will have a nib to attach it to, its to ensure if the battery vents hydrogen it gets safely discharged out under the car, rather than released into the plenum and drawn into the cabin.
