New tyre time, Conti 5's were awesome but always up for something different.

Ref: Conti 5's --->http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-...al-sport-contact-5s-hunter-tracking-done.html

The Contis had done 18,500 miles, and were still showing 2.5mm all round. (wheel rotation midway through that)

So they've absolutely trounced the Bridgestone RE05As by 5K! (at least if i'd had waited a little longer)

I've changed a little early as the ride with so little tread on becomes extremely harsh, and it was starting to get on my t1ts.

So as Dunlop sponsor BTCC this year I thought they must be in their prime.

So, hello Dunlops.

A rated in the wet and C for fuel economy (not that the latter matters!!) and very quiet at only 68db.

I can't find a tyre in 225/40R18 92Y XL form with better ratings so thought it must be worth a punt.

Lets see how she goes.... 32k on the clock  Will they beat the Contis.....? only time will tell....

Interested to see what you think - keep us posted! Got PS3s on the front of mine, the rears are still the original RE050A which still have a lot left on them, however like you I'm always keen to try something different. The PS3s have also worn well.

EDIT: Those Dunlops look gorgeous too! Shouldn't matter but it does!

Be interesting to see how well they do last as there doesn't seem to be that much rubber in contact with the road. The grooves are well wide not suprised it's good in the wet.

Karl.

Definitely a good looker! Stats show an excellent performer too!

Your still on original rears!? I'm on my 3rd set now (of this S3!)....haha.

Initial thoughts are always going to be good as it's fresh rubber, so I'm not going to make any judgments just yet. I've only done 6 miles on the things so far...

But I did drive most of the journey home going left to right getting them worn in fast!!

I've had PS3s on my 09 S3, great tyre too, only reason I didn't buy a conti, Michelin, or Bridgestone was becuase I've had them all before, I like to test the water :)

I'll update when I've been out for a bit of a play :)

I'm sticking with Goodyear Efficient grips. Bought car with 6.5mm on them, now after 20k miles they are down to about 4.4mm..

Do you feel lucky?

These are amazing on all but a really wet road.....

Then you do need to feel lucky.

So thats why they're in the boot.....as it just rains....99% of the time in this flamming country!

Think i'll stick with my Dunlops! With EPIC rain channels!

The Dunlops should be a hell of a lot quieter than those noisy Contis !!!

Pardon?

Don't I know it.

The channels on your tyres should cope with the British weather for sure, and when you've put some miles on them,it'll be interesting to hear what you think of them compared to the others.

My current favourite everyday tyre is still the Michelin Supersport, but I always like to hear if there's anything new or better around.

I run these. Excellent tyres. Quiet and grippy, but they wear pretty quick.

I would buy another set that's for sure.

I drive my S3 like I stole it, so they'll have the full hooligan test.

So far, top banana!

Always gone for sessanta's myself.

from Dunlop website (re: BTCC) :)

"Goodyear Dunlop group celebrates its tenth year as championship title sponsor in 2014, with its premier Dunlop tyre brand"

Pretty tyre maybe, but poor ratings. 'C' for wet grip and 'F' for rolling resistance/fuel economy. Quiet though at 67db.

Yep that's crap, once cars back from body shop looks like I'll try them as well. (Dunlops)

I've just put these on as summer tyres now and I'm waiting to see how they go once they've been scrubbed in a bit.

I had Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's on before and found those really good especially in the wet

They are a nice looking tyre though

Nearly 1,000 miles in and they're awesome!

Much sharper at turning in, especially when taking roundabouts as 'flat' as possible.

The contis were pretty worn as of late, so I found myself doing a fair bit of correcting mid corners so it's pretty difficult to remember way way back to the start of them.

Obviously when they were 8mm they were just the same so a comparison I can't really do.

I have no negatives to discuss at this point.

Endless grip....Quiet...and excellent in the rain. Can't go wrong.

Seem fine to me pal.

I've been going round major roundabouts with my head stuck to the passenger window.

Thanks Mike, I was going to PM you this week as I'm looking at changing wheels and thinking I'll wrap them in these beauties...

If I were to find one issue, I'd say they're a bit noisey on the rear of the car.

Not sure if that's because I have the rear seats down at the moment...probably is.

I find my car has a lot of tyre noise from the rear anyway, the PS3s on the front of mine are SO much quieter than the 050s that are still on the back. Unless they are like thunder, I'm not bothered, just want handling, wet/dry grip and not-outrageous economy.

Hows the wear, i had to buy 2 budgets, but come next week i have enough to replace all 4 and il be glad to get these hard rubbers off for something with EPIC rain channels lol

We have a set of these on our Civic Type R track car and they are awesome ! not good at -5 around Donnington on a wet and frozen track but in good weather you will struggle to live with these :D

Brakes get hot though...

Nice looking CTR. It amazes me how Honda went from that shape (which looks nice IMO) to the abomination that they moved the civic to.

It's soon three month since you bought the Sport Maxxs. How's the wear?

I'm just bought new 18" wheels to replace my 17s and I need new tyres. I narrowed my choice to 2 possibilities: Sport Maxx RT2 or GY Assy 3. I have Assy 3 on the 17" rims now and I like them. They don't wear fast, not noisy and very comfortable. But dunlops look much better and they seem to be lighter than Assy 3.

Not considered Michelin Pilot Sport 4 then ?
Michelins are less comfortable (harder?) and noisy in comparison to Dunlops and Assy3, if to trust reviews. I'm a daily driver and never track. I don't need high performance. My car lowered suspension is a little firmer than stock, not too much though. But anyway, if I choose harder tyres, the ride can be harsher, especially now, when I switch to lower profile tyres. As to a noise level, Assy3 have 67dB while MPS4 have 71dB. The 4dB difference is as twice as loud for a human ear. Please correct me if I'm wrong coz I don't have as much experience as you guys here.

25th July 2016 Auto Express tyre test .

225 40 18 , 9 tyres tested .

Noise levels , the Michelin and Dunlop are joint last ( 8th ) but the Goodyear is 7th !

As with most cars and the cheaper ones with shorter wheel bases are worst ( Fiat Panda ) the bitumen type factory panel damping is a token gesture , adding more panel damping particularly to the boot floor , wheel well and rear wings decreases tyre rumble and improves car audio too .

The simple and cheap application of Silent Coat .

Mps4 are suprisingly quieter than it says on a sticker.
I believe they might be same as assy 3.
Since i'm on kw v3 with other suspension mods, cant really comment about comfort, because i doubt i would really notice difference. Grip level is very high, both dry and wet. Steering feedback is also great.

So, according to the test, Goodyear is my winner so far :) Joke. Thanks for sharing it. I think I read this test, but overlooked an important part of it: how they measure the noise level. They measure the cabin noise in opposition to the "sticker makers" who measure the outside noise. That can explain why some tyres are so loud inside a car despite low noise level shown on a sticker.

On a custom noise damping. I considered it a few month ago and visited the local (and the only possible in Denmark) shop that offer noise damping with StP panels. Their price was approximately £1500-1600 for an A3 and it was above my budget. Not saying about 2-3 month waiting time. Perhaps I order StP panels from Russia and glue them myself.

I read about huge comfort and noise level improvement of MPS4 someplace too. But I need more evidence before I include them to my consideration list.

Yes, that was for everything: hood, roof, doors, floor, trunk inclusive wheel wells. A complete soundproofing.

To make it right, we need to damp both high and low frequecy sounds. The panels like the Silent Coat are used to damp low frequent sounds that come from the engine vibration, for instance, but the tyre noise is another beast and to eliminate it, we have to use other materials on top of the resonance plates, those that damp higher frequency. I watched a lot of instructional videos on this subject and haven't done it yet only because of procrastination, LOL.

Reviews on MPS4 look good. What could we expect from a tyre leader?
