Right, quick background. Love my S5, got it on a cracking deal and dont want to get rid of it...

BUT..

Start a job in London in September so will barely be driving and Ms Eskimo hates the S5 and won't drive it. Still need two cars (she has a Mini, which owes us nothing) so thinking of getting another car that she can drive that is nicer than her Mini, and will still give me access to a car when I need it (Don't think one car will work...).

Choices:

Keep the S5

Trade it in for a new FL A3 1.4TFSI S-Tronic 3dr S-Line in Daytona with parking plus and folding mirrors at about £100 cheaper monthlies on 24month PCP with 16% discount.

Get a Golf R on those stupidly cheap 24month lease deals

Sod the finance and go for a cheap used car and be miserable (but only rarely as won't drive much...)

To be honest, over the 24month term the Golf R is working out near £3k cheaper and seems the obvious choice since it comes so well specced (metallic paint, sat nav, DSG, ACC, front and rear sensors...). Only thing I am worried about is whether I like the Golf, and the charges if I want to leave early (as I am doing with the S5 potentially!)

Got a test drive of the R tomorrow, and I've driven the 1.4TFSI E-Tton, but not standard 1.4TFSI, so thats the obvious next step. Also doubt Ms Eskimo likes any of these cars (she just wants a cheap A1), but she's insufferable and since she has her Mini I think I should get something I at least don't mind driving about in (i.e. I dont want to drive an A1....)!

Even if my GF drives it to work every day (14miles round trip), it still won't be doing much over 5k miles a year....cheap lease deals seem made for this situation really...?

Any insight appreciated...unless you are sensible and say get a cheap used A1...then you can jog on...

I'm going to take this from another angle. Sense of humour switched on please :)
Maybe Ms Eskimo can jog on with her Mini and you can get what you want :D

More seriously isn't it better financially to keep the S5 on the PCP deal considering you had a cracking deal on it? Surely it makes more sense!

Ha true...!

She actually seems to quite like the Golf and the A3 so both would be a decent trade. Just can't help but feel its daft having an S5 sitting out on the road (no drive-way thanks to extortionate house prices around me...) and being driven just on weekends...If she/or I at least took it out, it would easily justify its stupid price, but we won't...

Obviously the Mini sitting there not doing much is less of an issue...

Seat Leon Fr?...Lot's of gadgets as standard to keep you happy and also 0% deals to be had at the moment..As for engine choice the 1.4 cod gives you decent performance and economy...

She has a Mini and she also wants a cheap A1 so she wants to drive and enjoy both car? Or you want to upgrade her Mini?
On a side note a new S5 Sportback (as in new model coming mid-2017) in Sepang blue with BSP would be high on my list of desirable cars!

Now that you write it like that...it makes her come across as very greedy! Basically the idea was that I got to spend money and enjoy the S5, so it seems fair to let her get a car she enjoys after like the A1. We looked at A1's before buying the Mini but they were too expensive so settled on the Mini.

Since we need two cars, it doesnt make sense to get rid of the Mini as its not costing us anything other than depreciation. I will eventually have to get rid of the S5 though...

And yea...not getting a Seat! Its basically just what happens to be cheap. You can get a Golf R on a 1+23 for £318 per month...just silly money and I won't mind driving that and neither will the GF! Running costs aren't a big deal if the cost of the car i so cheap...especially as we only do 5k miles a year.

I actually prefer the new A3, and happy with the cheaper running costs and lower performance. But when the Golf R is staring at you with very good options and S3 performance AND is considerably cheaper, it seems daft not to. I cant get any A3 or S3 deals close to that...best I did was get that pre-built one from my dealer down to £280pm on another 24month PCP. Deposit was just the equity in my S5.

Better £20000 car standing doing nothing than a £40000 car.Don't knock the Leon to much though it really is a nice car for the money..Dr eskimo is considering an A3 1.4? The point I was making was you get more bang for your buck with the Leon. You can't do much worse than one like this if you want a bit of fun for the odd weekend(I could possibly think of other things..lol) but you get my drift..

Ah ok. makes sense :) No no I'm not judging at all. Cars and other halves are a funny business sometimes :)
Get her an A1 (to replace the Mini). And then get what you'll be happy to drive (A3, Golf-R or s3 if you can stretch) which will also satisfy her as in not being excluded from driving your car because she likes it as well!

Haha yea that was impressive even by my standards Mr Frog!!

Has just occurred to me I haven't factored in the potential equity at the end of the A3 PCP deal...

If its anywhere near £2k then the A3 is actually cheaper...and cheaper to run....

Wait! By the time this thread goes to 100 posts you'll be getting her an S1, upgrading your S5 to a RS5 and keeping the Mini for the rainy days! :D

Ok, here is my input. Why don't you trade the mini in for a/s1 for the g/f and you get an approved used audi a/s 3 for yourself? That way you have a new car and the used car for occasional driving.

Bit of a snag in the S1 front....needs to be an auto! She has bad knees, and to be honest I cba with manual anymore! S-Tronic is too good!

Thanks Sandra! The problem is she's too sensible! She will just drive the mini because it's cheap and she doesn't mind....of course me spending my time on forums suggests I care slightly more than most about the car I drive...!

Approved used A3s are another option, but they are so close to the new cars for the spec I want, and finance is less attractive....I know a personal loan is cheaper as I'm paying to keep the car, not just paying the depreciation, but the psychology of paying more per month to get a worse car is difficult to over come! Man maths again...!

Ok keep the mini, there should be some good deals to be had in trade-ins due to new registrations in September. That's another option. Could get a car with some good options already on them :)

Well thats just it...I'm getting a rather ridiculous deal on this new FL A3! Giving me decent trade in on my S5 and knocking 16% off as discount on the A3...its very tempting!

It only has front\rear sensors and folding mirrors, but the S-Line seems decent on standard spec...does seem a shame not to get the virtual cockpit mind...

You can't argue with that discount to be honest. Ok do the deal and you all sorted. G/f keeps mini and has new car on standby. :)

Think you're spot on Sandra. Might even get it on a longer 36month term and it'll be cheaper 'per year'.

Now I dont know if my other dealer (always enjoy setting them up to compete against each other :)) is going to match the deal, but he has a FL A3 ready for me to take away too....

Between:
Glacier with comfort and sound and folding mirrors
Daytona with Parking Plus and folding mirrors

Which would you choose? Heated seats and B&O is really nice, and I can deal with just the rear sensors (and get the image coded using VCDS), but I prefer Daytona...Glacier is nice and never owned a white car before though!

Tricky one as they are both nice colours but speaking from experience I would go for the daytona because of the parking plus.Makes for a stress free parking experience..

Both great colours for totally different reasons. I've got Daytona Grey S3 on order but like glacier white a lot too!
If you're thinking of pulling the trigger between these 2 cars then you might have reached this crossroad where only your tastes and preferences matter and we should quietly stay in the background and let you fly on your own :D
Ok enough ******** lol both would be great ;-)
Would Mrs Eskimo prefer the park plus or the B&O?

Haven't asked yet...she gets home from work and says if I mention cars one more time then she's going to hit me....

Front sensors just seem a little unnecessary...whereas both heated seats and B&O are great...I'll have to see if my dealer can get close to the same deal though. He was struggling to get me near 10% when we last spoke so...might make up my mind for me...Sorry us....!

I'll let you know how the Golf R test drive goes....see it's a bit of a sensitive topic in these parts so I'll try and hate it unconditionally... ;)

@DrEskimo - I would change your S5 for one of those lease deals I put up on DW mate

Either the 3 door Golf R or the Seat Leon Hatchback 2.0 TSI Cupra Black 290 5dr

2 years motoring on the Leon for just over £6k. Madness!
No depreciation or RFL to worry about as its a lease car too

Thinking it might be a ladies thing...my GF always talks about heated seats...and I agree, love the B&O system in my S5.

Still no word from my dealer on that Glacier white one though...

@DrEskimo - How about the new MINI JCW 3 door hatchback with chili & nav packs on a 2 year lease
http://www.vwroc.com/forums/topic/14810-mini-cooper-20-jcw-231-bhp-chilli-pack-nav/
Or
Volkswagen Golf Diesel Hatchback 2.0 TDI GTD 5dr DSG [Nav] again on a 2 year lease
https://www.centralukvehicleleasing...6/volkswagen/golf/20_tdi_gtd_5dr_dsg_nav.html

Its very appealing, but as performance is not high on the list for my GF, the low running costs and flexibility of the PCP is making me lean more towards the A3. Still going to see the Golf R, but the interior looks horrendous, and thats far more important to Ms Eskimo....

You know I never asked if they had any S3....wonder how much more they are....? (SpeedyFrog I blame you...)
