Yep mine are used OK, in fact I have recently replaced them. If you are very light on your brakes the rears do not do much work, if you carry decent weight in the rear they will be used a lot more, but I would not expect the disc face to show any corrosion with regular use.

Or are you talking about the disc bell corroding?

No the disc face is about knackered. My RS3 lives on the motorway do the brakes hardly get used.

They shouldn't be like this after 6 months though.

Ta da!

Scored, pitted, corrosion. All from under use from the look of it. Pads are hardly touched.

Considering it does on average 2000 miles a month, it shouldn't look like this.

That is quite nasty, almost like some form of chemical has attacked the surface.

Do you park up near the coast or near some chemical plant?

No it lives all over. My old 335d didn't have this issue, and I used it for the same work.

It's due a service in 2 months time at 16k so I'm going to claim for new ones via the warranty, as this isn't wear and tear.

Looks like something isnt right, the pad doesnt even seem to be touching all the disc face . .

Yup. Looks like I get zero effort from the rears.

Hand brake works though haha.

Last time I buy a £50k A3.

Must be an awful lot of stress on the fronts if the rears aren't working. Perhaps get those replaced under warranty too!

To be fair it took the fronts over 2000 miles to de glaze. I guess I just don't brake much.

When I traded my 335d in on 43k miles I still had 8mm of pad left from 9.5mm when new.

Went through zimmermans, mtecs and in the end just bit the bullet and did the rs7 rear swap

Looks properly sorted now

I also polished up and sealed the front hats - auto finesse metal polish via rotary + carpro dlux

Are those staggered PSS you're running or 235 all around?

Looks killer man!

Yeh stock staggered 255/30 and 235/35.

Fills the guards much better than the narrow pirellis and much better turn in grip too with squarer sidewall

I would be one up for changing the tyres, but the slightly stretched Pirelli's do so much for the car.. Not sure if I would be able to deviate from that.

I'm normally one to hate stretched tyres, but on the RS they look incredible! :/

That is a stunning car. Can't tell the colour from that pic. Looks like Floret, then I think Nardo then............???

Very TRUE, and you 'could' do something about it, like so:

RS3 0983

One of my 8P rears with 4-years on road use: see http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/rust-on-rim-of-brake-discs.263586/#post-2677503

and/or: http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/afternoon-with-the-mad-professor.190476/

It's all been covered numerous times before here on ASN

And I'd be doing something similar to the outside edges of domino_z's to as they're already rusting...

Hope this helps... :salute:

So, purchased an Audi Approved A1 Black Edition recently and if you thing your rears are bad this is what I found lurking behind 5-spoke 18-inch rotors; not only were the discs as rusty as could be but the calipers and brake disc backplate, typically, had rusted in sympathy:

A1 POR15 1

Now I like POR15 so with a new brake disc (prepared with POR15 both hub and outer edges and vents)and pads I lightly de-rusted the caliper and brake back-plate and gave 'em two light coats of 'CLEAR' POR15:

A1 POR15 2

1000-miles later and the clear coat goes (due to the heat generated) a gold colour - a colour I much prefer to RUST!

A1 POR15 3

And here's our TT (below) front brakes (disc and caliper) that I prepared with POR15 some 4-years ago:

A1 POR15 4

Hope this helps and answers any question of the durability of POR15

Oh, and wheel/brake cleaning with 5% domestic Flash to 95% water, simples...

Do you really find that to be effective as a regular cleaner? I'd be worried to use it on diamond cut wheels on a regular basis.

I struggle to find whip effective wheel cleaners, I've stuck with "Hot Wheels" as that works very well but is £8 a time. I will definitely give the flash a crack if it won't do any harm! It removes all brake dust without any issues also?

@AudiNutta AG Wheel Cleaner is what I've used for years. It's still the most effective one I've found and keep going back to it. I also seal the alloys with CarPro Reload. Brake dust wipes off very easily.

I will have a look for it. I have sealed my wheels 3 times now with Carbon Collective and every time I tell myself "will never use alloy wheel cleaner again, only soapy water" but the coating to be honest are pretty *****. I always end up using wheel cleaners again to get off the most of the dust. It might just be a mental thing but I end up thinking if I use anything but a wheel cleaner that the wheels aren't silver enough haha.

Long story short, given up on wheel coatings now.. just using heavy duty wheel cleaners at the moment. The rest of the car is sealed though.. got to love the beads :D

Yes, absolutely, and I use it on all 3-cars and you can clearly see the sate of 'em...

Try it on someone elses car first, Audinutta; preferably a non Audi... :whistle2:

I have used Flash neat when needed but generally a 5% Flash to 95% water is fine and the brake dust just washes off; and it's cheap, usually found under the kitchen sink in most homes...

P1020353

And I NEVER use a sealer on the wheels, winter or summer, just an Autoglym spray-on-shine after the Flash treatment; again, see photos; sometimes they can lie but not these ones...

@45bvtc Excellent, thank you. I will go and pick some up on my next set of rest days and try it out!

Sadly there isn't a non-Audi I can try it on, got an A6 Allroad, A4 Saloon and my A3 on the drive.. Even the grandparents have an A3 saloon :tearsofjoy:

I do however have a spare wheel that was damaged when I were involved in a hit and run last year sadly. I will dig that out and try it on there :tongueout:

Thanks for all your help

Start with a 5 to 10% mix, AudiNutta, and you'll be amazed. Also good for washing your microfibre cloths if and when contaminated with brake dust; I keep a set of 'red' microfibre cloths just for my wheels...

I first discovered Flash for brake dust removal while cleaning my garage floor and had 'splashed' one of my wheels with the 'mix' and the effect was just amazing so did the rest of the wheel and then the other three wheels and have been using it ever since - 10 years plus I guess and no worries; I mean, it's been used on BLUEY for 4-years now and she's never complained...

Flash BLUEY

@45bvtc Well I must say if it has been good enough for bluey, it will be good enough for anything! I would love to see your cars in person, the pictures show them out to be absolutely inaccurate, you definitely are a true enthusiast.
It's nice to see someone else willing to put in that much effort to take care of a car, hats of to you!

I will most definitely be picking some up tomorrow and trying it out this week, thanks again.

No worries, AudiNutta; just let me know when you're passing and providing we're not at one hospital or another - the reason for the delayed response - you'll sure be made welcome...

Just driven down the M6 in the A1 (185bhp and 7-speed DSG) and what a cracking motor, and 39.4mpg... 'A'mazing machine... :racer:

And you're not that far away and 'spookily' near another member I'm thinking....

Thanks a lot for the offer I will keep that in mind, for sure. Yes you aren't too far away from me, only a couple of hours up the road and I seem to find myself travelling all over the UK on jollies throughout the year. If I do ever get my hands on an RS3 (it seems like I've waited for so long), I'm sure I will be bored one day and come visit for a reason to take the car out.

That's not bad going for a car of that power. I am still in a 120bhp 1.4TFSi A3 S Line at the moment, my biggest regret is not getting the S Tronic they are fantastic gearboxes. I seem to average around 50mpg on a well behaved motorway run, but similar at around 39mpg around town. Still doing well to be in the car I'm in now however, I haven't long turned 19. I hope that when I turn 20 next May, I will be collecting an RS3.. If Audi do decide to be kind enough and reinstate one, any RS3.. I'm not picky ;)

What member is that? I am aware of someone in the Bristol area, but I'm not sure otherwise? :)

Had to go have a lie down and try to recall the ages of 19 and/or 20, AudiNutta, and it sure was a struggle; what on earth was I doing in 1965 that I could write down here... :yahoo:

Sorry Sandra... :whistle2: Judith...

And, AudiNutta... Did diluted Flash work for you or not... :search:

I apologise for not responding with the outcome, I have been in work for a few 12 hour shifts since then.

Well the Flash we had in the house was a "multi-surface cleaner", is this what you use? I diluted it about 10% to 90% water, I found it was quite hard work to use the brush to get the dust off. The wheels did look shiny afterwards, it just seemed to take a bit of effort to get it off?

Interesting, I didn't know there was more than one type. RS3copilot supplies me with Flash Clean and Shine - "crisp lemons". I guess it's the same, AudiNutta, but I don't know; also, I guess you may be attacking more 'dust' than I'm used to and/or maybe different brushes - I use Wheel Woolies - but for sure and as you've seen I don't have issues

Little and often is my motto and that goes for washing the car, too; as I no longer 'wax' just Autoglym Shine and Lub (or similar) and that goes on the wheels, too; so stay with it and once properly clean it should be easy and cheap...

I tried to use it again with my wheels only very lightly dusted after 60 miles or so. I had to give up on it, the places where the dust gathers most just wouldn't budge. I used some wheel cleaner and it came off right away.

I will try and get some Flash Clean and Shine, as mine is obviously different it is more of a gel than anything.

Thanks again, hopefully I will have more luck next time!
