Hi guys getting prepared to fit an rs3 style grill to the front of my A3!

Unsure what paint to buy for the front crash bar as don't want it chipping off a month down the line!

Shall I use hammerite... Spray on.. Brush on... Or even stone chip paint?

Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks

I've done the same thing mate, I keyed mine and sprayed and it has chipped like mad, I will be sanding mine down, primer , paint and many coats of lacquer to protect, I wouldn't personally brush on purely because of wanting a good finish!

Make sure you rough up the metal 1st so it bonds properly, can lacquer after to give it better protector.

Did mine in dull heat proof black spray paint, used the same on my radiator, originally bought it for the garden chimneys

Agreed though clean and rough up the bar first for a decent coat

Make sure you use etch primer otherwise the paint has no chance of holding up to any abuse.

I used heat proof matt black paint. Can't even tell it's there. Just clean and a rough up will make sure it sticks well. I think I did 3 or 4 coats

Yea I think dull is the way as your trying to hide it rather than make it nice and shiney, il see what I can find on the way home!

I painted mine matt black but was thinking to vinyl wrap it and then just replace the vinyl as needed. How much heat can vinyl take?

Vinyl peels even from the thought of heat in my experience! Plastidip will cope well with heat though

I keyed mine up, used etch primer then sprayed it gloss black, no laquer and its still going strong with none peeling

I found some underbody paint at Lidl last night so thought id give that a go and its highly resistant... will I have to use etch primer or will standard primer be ok?

Thanks

I'm also gonna be fitting a RS3 grill and I just gave mine a clean and 5 coats of plastidip. Hope it's fine LOL

Did the same and it is holding up fine. But its only been a few months

I gave mine loads of coats of plastidip. I don't think it needs to look amazing, just needs to be dark so it doesn;t stand out.

I used spray can chalkboard and clear laquar and it's been on about 2 and half months and still fine I didn't sand just sprayed straight on :)

Standard matt black from Halfords will do the job with grey undercoat. No need for high temp stuff. Mines been on for a year with no problems. I even have normal paint on the engine cover,, no heat problems.
