hello all,

i have just purchased a 2004 2.0 T FSI sportback last wednesday, on way home the car was fine and everything was working and tempatures were spot on at 90. i took the car to my brothers house to show him and left the car idling for arround 10 mins and the car had got up to 110 temp. i didnt really think to much of it at this time as must have been excited. so let car cool down and took it home 2 mins away.

however yesterday was first day since buying i could take the car out, i drove the car for about an hour and the car was perfectly fine up until i got stuck in traffic and the car got up to just over 110 again, i pulled over and popped the bonnet, fan was not spinning.

also the little DIS LCD screen inbetween the clocks has gone completly blank? i have tried the reset button with short presses, long presses, holding down for so many seconds ect, nothing will get anything on the screen at all?

any help will be much appriciated

The fis could be fixed for around £150. There are plenty of specialists out there. But the temperature no idea, take me t to the mechanic

There are a few dash clockset repairers around that can repair the DIS screen for you for exampel ecutesting.com: http://www.ecutesting.com/instrument_cluster_common_faul.html

As for the rise in temperature, the thermostat may be at fault here. If the thermostat was stuck shut the whole time the engine temperature will rise as you have described and the electric cooling fan would stay on for most of the time. But if you are saying that the cooling fan isn't working either then it may be possible that the fuse for this has gone. With the engine off, check to see if the cooling fan can be spun freely with your hand. This will at least eliminate a stuck cooling fan. Then check the fuse and the wiring for the cooling fan to see if there are any breaks in the wires. May also be worth getting someone to plug in VCDS software and see if any faults have been recorded, as well as live engine temperatures etc.

Its actually quite unusual for the dis to go on the 8P's, not impossible of course.

I would pop the battery leg of for 5 minutes & retest.

Check fuse for the fans as maybe this & get on vcds of course to check diagnostically for faults, the fan packs can go dead tbh so it maybe just that.

Hello again,

Yeah from what ive been reading online they hardly ever die but can get pixelated from time to time, its weird because the day before it was perfectly fine. I have read that a short in lights can stop it working or something?

I have booked in in with a local garage to be looked at the fan as should be covered under my 3 montgs warrenty, but looks like the dis will be my own responsibility. Just clueless on what to try as it just looks like there is no power to it what so ever

If i pop the negative off the battery for 5 mins will i have to enter a code for the stereo? (Audi symphany) as i dont believe i have one for it

No iusually the head unit remembers the car connected too, but its your choice,

Ok ill give it a try when i get home, what will happen if it does ask for a code for a stereo? Is there a way to get the code?

So long as its a OEM radio unit, Call audi and request the key. Do not pay for it and if they ask you to pay for the key, Call Audi UK :D

Brilliant thanks guys, will give it a try when i get back today. Its in for cambelt, waterpump, major service and cooling fixing today

What button have you been pressing as a reset? The one underneath or on the end of the stalk? AFAIK, it's the one underneath that is the reset.

Where is the button underneath. Just for future reference.

Oh right. Cheers. :salute:

Well some good news is that ive has my cambelt and water pump today and the same garage had a look at why cooling fan wasent working.

Both fans had died and were both replaced under warrenty costing £359 (took alot of arguing with the garage to pay out)
So that issue is fixed

Now the dis, i have removed my battery for about 20 mins still does not turn on? Does anyone have any ideas on testing the screen before i go buy another set of clocks to butcher, thanks

Do you have anyone local with VCDS? Might be worth scanning for faults.

i dont, i do have a bluetooth elm 327 and have scanned car for faults with torque pro, no faults what so ever.

so i took the car for a drive the other day and the screen is back on :O dont know what has happened
