Prawn and BigAls A3 Track Car

Oh dude :(

I'm still tempted to drop new valves and springs into my head before it goes back on - even more so after seeing this. Funds are tight though, so not sure whether to do it now to a minimal level or down the line and go a bit further. Need to look into it more when I'm ashore for more than a few hours though; hadn't seen the CatCams offerings so that could be an option if there's a little money to be saved?

Personally I think the time is now right to build this car with some proper power .Uprated wheels, brakes, suspension , aero and other goodies we have talked about and take it off the road until next year. Lets build an Animal. 2017 come on.

Got bored of the A3 for now, so I'm letting it have a rest in the garage whilst I gather enthusiasm to crack on with it.

Bought this instead for the time being!

When the time eventually comes to go racing, at least I've got the tow car sorted!

Very nice 3.0 diesel estate, welcome to my world :) . Sorry to see the state of the engine but it looks like it could have been worse. Is that rod going to be OK on that cylinder, it must have taken a good bit of abuse hammering that valve head into the piston.

Was driving a M5 last week. Nice motor. Reverse sensors don't work tho as managed to scuff a low lone bollard when reversing.

Another good day today :)

Started off by fitting the new Silver-Project adjustable top mounts :)

I previously had Eibach eccentric top mounts fitted, and whilst these have been great, they're eccentric, offsetting the strut by a set amount. And then you rotate the mount to alter the camber / caster gain, but the two are very much dependant on each other. As one goes, up, the other goes down. For a fast road setup I think they're ideal, as they retain the rubber top mount, and improve geo, but I wanted more!

...so, the eibach mounts prior to stripping down:

C3667166-C9C9-4716-B7BD-49AA21683DB5-3965-000002626F281164.jpg

I had modified these by removing the locating pin and tapping a thread into them, so allow a bolt to be screwed down into the mount to lock it's rotation. This worked better than the eibach design, which could easily break off if you didn't have it aligned 100% when torquing it down.

Top caps off, and just the lower nut to remove:

One Silver Project top mount waiting to go on:

Old mounts removed, and I took the spring cap off the KW's to check how it'd all mate together.

6B25CE57-B04D-4763-8974-34B6A503B2EC-3965-00000262AA2CF042.jpg

Now, I was told that these could replace all the standard top mounts and bearings totally, but if I were to use the lower fitting from the kit only, it would put all the rotation of the strut through the spherical bearing, which, as Sam highlighted earlier, could well shorten the life of the bearing:

9D1BD78F-65B2-40F8-8C24-12A55C2CE92F-3965-00000262AFED891E.jpg

However, When you fitted the OE top mount bearing in between the spring cap and the new part, everything seemed to fit together rather perfectly:

The OE bearing fits the KW's pefectly, and the lower collar of the top mount kit fits inside the casing of the OE top mount perfectly.

This cannot be co-incidence, it's got to go like this. This way, the pillowball takes all the weight, and seals with strut location and any angular changes during the shock travel, but the OE bearing deals with all rotational forces from steering. Cheap and dead easy to replace, and proven to last very well. It seems like a good combo to me.

So, time to fit it all :)

And coming together:

Then the top cap goes on, and the bolts go in, and it's looking complete:

I've not had it aligned yet, but I'm now showing around 2.8 degrees of negative camber, and I expect around 9.5 degrees caster. On the test drive intial impressions are very promising, the ride is smooth and good, and not anywhere near as harsh as I thought it might be. The car feels incredibly pointy on turn in and just goes where I want it, with no delay. Steering feel seems better, you can you really feel the effects of the increased caster with a nice weight around centre to the steering.

Once I've got some new wishbone bushes I'll get it all corner weighted and aligned again, but first impressions are that this kit is VERY good value for money. It fits perfectly, it's very easy to adjust, the rose joints are a standard size and replaced for just a few quid if needs be, and by utilising the OE upper bearings also it should give everything a decent life span.

I wouldn't hesitate to run these on a road car either.

Massive thanks to Silver-Project for the top mounts, if anyone is intersted they can be found here: SilverProject

Or on ebay here:

How dis you install the silver projet camber plates? Did you put the bearing and the upper mount top plates and the kit on that ? I asked to silver projet and they give me that Web site for help they din't give me any response about how to install the kit on the struts

He could have at least chose a nice Audi instead of a beemer. BMWs are sooo bland.

Apparently, "a two ton diesel barge" is not exactly like an MX-5? :p
They can be made to handle a lot better than they do from the factory. My barge a Curbrough managed a 28.9 fastest lap.

You can get the back end out on mine and it's a Quattro.

Modern audi stuff like your daily looks great Chris.

Around this price bracket though, nothing VAG really comes close in terms of refinement and comfort. a mid 2000's A4 in any engine feels like a step down IMO.

If I were buying an audi, it'd HAVE to be an S-Line, and preferably the 3.0tdi, A4 or A6, and the cheapest one I can find is almost £2k more than I paid for the 530!

Had it cleaned on Weds, I think it looks great!

Can get decent spec'd A6 (C5) 2.5 TDI for next to nothing these days... Been thinking about chopping Alfred in for one myself, it's just not needed at the moment though. Would be nice to know I have that extra towing capacity though!

Had a BMW 5 minutes and already its like "I have people for that"... you've changed ;)

Don't be silly, Nick's never cleaned the A3 himself. I'm sure once he gets time his butler will confirm this.

Probably the last of the better shaped BMs IMHO. Anything after 2005 they seem to get left behind in terms of the styling and looks from other makes.

Always used to think our 2003 A4 was a nice car, then now ive been in mine for a bit, getting into the old mans car is like stepping back into 1950! (not that id know what thats like either before people chirp up haha)

Nice derv, I'm riding in a HDI 306 I bought for £50 while my A3 is off the road, lol.

Only minor flaw is the auto box, the rubber diaphram in oil regulator disintegrates after 100,000 miles and if it goes then the box eats itself in short order. Preventative maintanence is £60 for the regulator and then oil and filter for the box. Whereas if it goes its a lot more expensive.

I used to have an e39 530i auto, nice plush car to commute it, its just had no soul.....

Indeed, I've been somewhat busy getting things ready for Eriks arrival.

WHAT a weekend. so much done in a short space of time, and Eriks car totally transformed.

Never felt so tired though. 4pm-1am Friday night. 9am-8pm Saturday, 9am start again Sunday, and we finally drove it out of the garage at 10pm last night!

I'm sure Erik will post more details in his own thread, which can be found here: http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/roadcar-a3-build-from-the-netherlands.229333/

In other news, I made a little trip on Thursday night to the new BBT premises:

and I came home smiling:

is that just a stack of tyres on the right or do they all have rims as well?

...i get in trouble for 4 spare wheels, can't imagine the suffering if i had 21 spare wheels at home, lol

Just tyres on the right Alex.

There's another 4 rims and 14 tyres in the pit though

Nick whats going on, I see an engine out and in bits situation there?

Well.......

Long term plans are set. It'll be going to 1900cc, rebore obviously, with a full bottom end build including pistons. the head will be done by Bill using Supertech valves and CatCams gold springs on both sides.

All this of course costs money, which means I need time. Buckets of spare money are not something I have currently.

So, I've devised a plan.

Rather than spending the entire summer with it sitting in the garage and me getting miserable, I've decided to throw in a stock AGU lump for now, with my baffled sump fitted, but otherwise standard.

I'll refit my 064 (the brand new one :sunglasses:- more on that this evening) and all ancillaries, and write a sensible map with around 18psi peak, and boost coming in even more gently than before. Rev limit will be at 7k, and it should hopefully see a safe 300-320bhp with very minimal torque.

That'll get me through summer, get some use from the car, and give me time to build the new engine PROPERLY rather than rushing things through to get it done.

So far, both Bill at Badger5 and Clive at BeachBuggyTurbos have been awesome in helping me get parts together to get it going again, I can't thank you guys enough :)

Once the new engine is built and in Clive and I are going to look at testing one of the new generation BBT 064 hybrids also, like the one @george_seamons is about to fit to his S3.

Hopefully it won't be too long before it's alive again :)

I've missed it
