Hi guys

I think i need to change my cam chain tensioner as the engine is sounding like a tractor when the engine warms up but sounds perfect if i raise the revs even slightly (the noise comes back as soon as the revs fall back to idle).

I've checked partscatalog for the part number but it shows two:

058109088B

and

058109088E

There's also one that ends with a K when looking around forums.

Does anyone know if there's a difference between the part numbers or are they just revisions?

Also what one would i need for my AUM engine?

Last letter is a revision... you will be given the latest revision that VAG list... be aware that they are around £400 or more for an OE one...

Try using the ASN parts request for best OE prices

Hope you don't mind me jumping in here, I'm also looking for a chain tensioner, but for an AMK lump. Can anyone advise on quality of parts on eBay? I see various brands around the £70 mark with a 2 year warranty, so I'm naturally tempted. Unless the entire tensioner fails, I can't see a much chance of catastrophic valve collision.

I'm only wanting to sort a ~2 second rattle on start and slight rattle passing 2k rpm.

Parts request submitted, but thought I'd ask in the meantime.

Avoid eBay ones like the plague mate... they are mostly crap and there are a lot of fakes out there... I fell foul of one such fake...

I now use a GSF VVT unit (http://www.gsfcarparts.com/023vg0140) this has been in for 3yrs/10k+ miles without incident so far and if you sign up for the offers emails GSF do at least 30% discount pretty much every weekend which will bring it down to less than 200 quid..

While I couldn't recommend the GSF one over the OE one it was cheap enough to try and came with a 12 month warranty that would be easier to action than through some fly by night eBay seller and was worth a punt... its held up so far so I have no reason to think it shouldn't last a little while longer

I always get this fault with the GSF VVT tensioner, not sure how common it is

16395 - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake): ****** Setpoint not Reached (Over-Advanced)

I had that not long ago as well as a missfire and it turned out to be coil packs

No misfire in this case Paul, it only started when the new tensioner was fitted. I thought I recall others having the same issue with these, not 100% certain

Hmmmmm

So the VVT is trying to adjust to its set point but can't ?

It adjusts on oil pressure doesn't it
Has it has an oil change recently? The oil isn't **** thin?

Pick up pipe done ?

Yes it adjusts on oil pressure, I was told the reason for the fault code is because the valve is slow to return or engage.

it only started popping up after it was fitted, no faults with the OE one before and it'll be changed again for another OEM one soon but I just thought I'd post what i'd experienced with it. Yes oil all changed regularly (nanodrive 5w40) and pickup, OE oil pump etc when the engine was done last year.

Many thanks for your replies Tufty & co!

Did your GSF tensioner come with the tool and a gasket set Tufty?

Also, whats the score on replacing the chain as well, i assume its advisable to change the chain at the same time, but i'm on a tight budget since buying the car!

Cheers!

Gasket set is separate but available from GSF for around a fiver... no real requirement to change the chain... they are £20 ish from memory and tbh I would only ever buy an OE one tbh... try the ASN parts request for that

Tool comes with the tensioner as its pre-compressed

Amazing, thanks mate. New tensioner and gaskets on the way for £162, down from £279 with the July42 code!

Seen a guide that suggests swinging the exhaust cam out with the tensioner, is that really necessary, or can the tensioner be wound down and removed while leaving the cams in place?

Hope you don't mind all the questions!

>£500 now tuffty!! scarey robbing b'stards vag are

£527 but who's counting....LOL

Whats a pain in the a** is that i've only just bought a new MAF, the parts im replacing are starting to be worth more than the car :(

I just hope it turns out to be the tensioner.

I know genuine audi is best for the tensioner but has anyone used a VAICO chain from ECP ?

Also (unrelated)......

What would cause a high VAC on the boost gauge ?

It always sat at 20 at idle but i've noticed that it sometime climbs to about 30 VAC.

GSF VVT unit this evening, bit of a biatch but had worse jobs on French cars!

Seems to be a bit down on power now, cam timing might be out, or I could have disturbed a fragile pipe. The DV doesn't seem to sound the same so the latter seems likely.

No fault codes on startup, did take a while to start though, had to build up oil pressure again I guess.

Thanks for the tips @Tufty!

If you'd disturbed cam timing a fault code would appear almost instantly...

Cool, thanks for that. What sort of codes would it throw?

I timed both cams to the marks and counted 16 rollers. No fault codes after a 15 minute drive round.

Found a big split in the triple pcv pipe thing near the puck. PCV delete next!

It'll throw a correlation fault I think if the timing is out.
If youve got a huge split in a pipe that will be leaking air, rip all that crap out

@<tuffty/> is your GSF (Febi?) tensioner now fault code free? If not are you just ignoring it?

Thanks.

I have checked the codes a few times over the past few months (because I can do so easily with FIS Control ;) ) and nothing has come back for ages... all still works as god intended ....
