Hi Guys,

Got myself an S3 (late 2013) couple weeks ago. It does have the STronic gearbox and has currently done 30,000 miles. I usually keep cars about 3 years and do approx 10,000 per year. I LOVE IT!

Bought from main dealer so I have a full dealer 12 months warranty with it.

Was wondering your thoughts/views on purchasing an extended dealer warranty. They have quoted the following costs (not sure if inc or ex vat):

1 year - £670
2 years - £875
3 years - £1080

I would "hope" I could bolt this on to the end of my current 12 month warranty but have not asked yet.
They also said that to have an extended warranty, they have to do a 145 point check on the car before agreeing and that would cost 1 hour of their time at £119 (not sure if inc or ex vat). But I might be able to avoid this as the car has only been with me 3 weeks and they did their 145 point check when I bought it.

The car has just been back in to dealer for a faulty sat-nav but they were very good, polite, helpful and have replaced the ariel and updated the maps and all seems to be working just fine now all under warranty.

Do you think it is worth the cover? and the costs? Your views? Anyone else bought a warranty on a 30 month old car?

Thanks guys

Have you been on to Audi's own extended warranty website or is this some 3rd party policy (e.g warranty wise) the dealer are offering you, as I've never heard of having to have a 145 check carried out prior to policy purchase before?. I certainly didn't need a 145 check before putting the Audi extended policy on my previous car.

This was a direct quote from Audi Dealer. The 145 point check part was given to me by the lady on the Service Dept. rather than from the guy who emailed over the prices so I can't stand by if it is/isn't needed..

As it has the s-tronic box I'd go for the extended warranty. They are superb boxes as you will be aware but if they do go wrong they are extremely expensive to fix.

No mention at all on the Audi website about needing a 145 check prior to policy purchase, I just checked by completing the online application & there is no requirement to have a 145 check from what I can see.

I'd also double check the prices quoted too, as you've made no mention of the policy excess levels or annual mileage selected either of which can influence the cost of the policy.

Thanks Guys for the details.

Not sure on the policy excess or mileage - the details I gave were all the details the audi bloke emailed me.

I have emailed them back asking about extra things.

I tried the Audi Warranty price thing on their site (https://www.audi-extendedwarranty.co.uk/VWFS/Vehdets.aspx) but it won't allow me to continue as the car has manufacturers warranty already on it (I guess cos it's under 3 years old?).

Thanks

let us know how you get on. Personally I think the Audi Warranty would be more comprehensive than any aftermarket one from Warranty Direct and the like. Maybe more expensive but worth in it, just in case.

Towards the end of the third year you usually get an invite to take out the extended warranty, when you can choose the policy coverage level, excess level & mileage restrictions you may wish to apply.

I think in the meantime I'd ignore the email prices as they're obviously incorrect & tailor the quote to you own personal preferences when the time comes.

just check ALA and they were 990 for 3 years using main dealers for repairs and cheaper if you use independents for repairs. So the Audi warranty isnt too bad. For the sake of £90 id stick with the audi branded one, even if its just a brand name and managed/underwritten by a bog standard insurer, as you would expect they would provide a better service to ensure you come back and buy another car from them

Nice one thanks.

Just had answers back from Audi.

Yes the warranty would extend my existing warranty, so I wouldn't lose any of the current one.
There is no excess.
There is no mileage restriction other than the mileage on the car when taken out - waiting on an answer to that.
I don't need a 145 point check on the car as it is still under warranty (this is just for cars with no current warranty).

So it doesn't look "too" bad. I could take out the 3 year, which would give me 4 years worth of warranty for £1000.

I have already had the sat nav ariel replaced, the roof fin re-painted and the maps updated - so i guess that would have been expensive as the map update was quoted at £250!!! so I'm guessing I would have been the wrong side of £500 if I had to pay for all that.

The reason I "worry" - the comments people make about the STronic box and my previous experience with Audi - Had a 2008 TTS (Stronic) and although the gearbox was solid and never had any issues I did have the following go wrong that I had to pay for: Window Regulator (£200+), Presure Regulator in the engine (>£200), Water in the boot lid finally caused the BOSE AMP to fault and a few other things that I can't recall.

Although my previous Audi A3 never missed a beat!

Thanks

I always take the extended manufacturers warranty if I go past 3 years and usually pay monthly premium till I sell the car.

I wouldn't bother with other 3rd party warranty though.

If something major goes on a modern car - its always going to be expensive. Personally, I would always pay for the extra peace of mind.

It also helps if you sell private.
As you can tell the purchaser that if there is anything wrong with the car, you would have had it fixed under warranty.
And they can normally take the extended warranty on within a certain time frame as well.

I had the Audi extended warranty on my TT and it was very handy when the S-Tronic gearbox died..twice!

Died twice!! Oh crap! How much would that have cost to repair? Did you see the repair cost at all? I'm phoning Audi now for the warranty!!

I got one mechtronics unit and 2 complete gearboxes under warranty. I believe both gearboxes were reconditioned units and came direct from Germany. The cost for all work relating to the gearbox alone was about £7k including parts and labour. I also got a wiring loom, an airbag control module and 6x coil packs (V6). The airbag issue would have been very expensive as it took quite a while to find the (intermittent) fault.
Doesn't put me off DSG/S-Tronic although I'll be using the extended warranty if I keep my S3 longer than originally planned.

Edit: I had the Audi extended warranty and would buy it the next time too.

Ouch!!!!!

Can I ask how old the car was and the mileage when you had all these problems? Was it an S3?

I asked Audi if I can purchase the extended warranty at any stage and they said yes up to the expiry of my current warranty. So I'm more than temped now to extend the warranty by 2 or 3 years but maybe wait until a month before mine expires.

Warranty is worth its weight in gold in my opinion.

I bought the S3 with the 5 year / 90,000 warranty - following a £10,000 bill for my (well) out of warranty 997, but that's a different story.

I will add that, having just had my transfer box replaced at a 'cost' of nearly £5k on a 32k motorway mile S3, things can go wrong to even the most pampered cars....

I don't get it? If you can get 4 years of cover for that, then do it. You can add the remainder on sale i.e. 2 years down the line add 500 to the sale price or even pay monthly instead (check if you have to pay any interest though).

My 1st A3 was fine and brand new. 2nd was 3 years old used and had to have the airbag rewired, the dealer then decided to tear out the entire boot upholstery (no, I'm not exaggerating) and then it was confirmed as having "mechatronic failure" with the dsg box. Thankfully all happened in the first 2 weeks of ownership, after 6 total weeks of repairs everything was fine for 4 very happy years. Audi wanted £1k/year for warranty - lol nop!!!:whip:

On the 8V S3 I chose the 5 year option of warranty, so basically two years @ 250 a year which is a bargain imo.

Warranty's should last at least 10 years imo, should be law. But anyway, I would go for it if you got 4 years for £1k.

Warrantydirect, click4warranty - I hear mixed stories but be prepared to fight and would be better if you had an independent garage on your side, makes it easier.

Sounds like you have had a bad deal of cards DanG with those failures. Expensive.

I assume the transfer box cost was all covered on your warranty and not from your own pocket.

It's good to hear peeps views on this as £1000 sounds expensive but when you start quoting £10,000 and £5,000 repair bills then it's a no brainier!

Yes, mine was covered without question by Audi warranty.

They handled the whole thing very well indeed from start to finish.

Car returned last week, cleaned, fuelled and fault (and bill) free.

My car is Feb 14 S3 coming up to 32k, as it's an STronic I'll be definitely extending the warranty if I still have it come next spring.

As I said before it also helps at resale too.

If anything was wrong with the car, it would have been fixed under the warranty.

Extra reassurance for the buyer......higher sale price for you.
It pays for itself.
