can hear a whining.

Hi All,

Ive got a whine coming from somewhere, I don't think its anything to do with gearbox, i can hear it when i drive, it changes pitch with acceleration. also if i dip the clutch and rev the engine it makes the same noise and changes pitch.

any ideas?
 
just checked my power steering fluid and its at minimum.

could this be causing the noise?
 
It could be if it was sucking air into the system but IIRC you would feel it through the steering wheel. It could be a worn bearing on any of the ancillaries.....without hearing it, it's quite hard to diagnose.

But on a side note I have whining noise that comes and goes as the Mrs gets in and out of the car.....whisper quiet when it's just me :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

the steering feels fine mate, it definitely changes pitch when accelerating when in gear or when clutch is pushed down and you ref the engine.

hahahaha yea that's another whine that i hear all the time when the other half gets in and out of the car.
 
Best to focus on the fixable whines Darren.

Yea true mate.

Had another listen and don't think it's the power steering pump. It seems to come from the back of the engine. Thats maybe because it's closer to the bulk head so that's where I'm hearing it.
 
still trying to figure out what this is, it doesn't seem as bad when the car is warmed up but on first start up it sounds like a loud super charger or something.

Had a quick check this morning ingredients but still can't seem to find a leak.

I may have to get under the car and check for anything.
 
Just a thought but it couldn't be anything to do with me removing the airbox baffle could it
 
That's got nothing to do with the airbox mod, sounds nothing like mine.

What engine you got mate? Have you had someone listen under the bonnet while you Rev it? Any loss of power while driving?
 
It's the tfsi engine mate.

Yea I got my brother to rev it. It sounded like it was coming from around the turbo area but could be wrong
 
Could be a boost leak or possible a failing DV.

So do you have any fault codes coming up? How's the car driving compared to the noise being there?
 
The car is erratic at the best of times mate. Sometimes it picks up.well and sometimes it feels like I'm driving with the hand brake on.

It's got the revised dv on it but I suppose that can't rule out a possible leak
 
Any fault codes? When was the DV fitted? D or G?

Have you had a leak test done? Mine ran like a bad of crap and my DV was split literally in half and the PCV valve was leaking like a siv, changed both and it's like a completely different Animal.
 
ive not managed to get it plugged in anywhere to check.

I replaced the pcv and dv at the back end of last year when I got the car bud.
 
That noise is 100% the turbocharger. Doesnt sound well.

Its not a leak, your not producing any meaningful boost revving the engine like that for it to leak.
 
thanks for that mate. its been doing my head in. its always louder first thing in a morning too.

Il have to save up and get it reconditioned.
 
priced up getting the turbo refurbished, its going to be £200 which doesn't seem bad however I have no suprus money at the moment so I will have to do some saving.

Evening.

Hopefully I'll be removing the turbo this weekend.

I've looked at a thread on how to do it and looks fairly straight forward. The only thing I'm unsure of is removing the cat from the turbo, it looks as the the nuts underneath are hard to get too. Will I need any particular tools to get to them?

Also is there anything else I need to be aware of?

I've just started dismantling this and the exhaust bolts where not tight at all. One of them could of been undone just by using my fingers? Is this normal
 
Eventually got the turbo off. The blades are rubbing against the turbo housing
