Has anyone got any personal experience of any gearbox rebuilding specialists?

Google throws loads of companies up, but I'd rather hear personal recommendations if possible.

My 81K mile 2003 S3 is has recently started to grind into 3rd, but only when really pressing on. Drives perfectly the other 99% of the time.

Would rather get this nipped in the bud and sorted before it gets any worse.

BK transmissions in Overton, Basingstoke - Just rebuilt my mums box for her TT, and I've used em loads in the past when I was in the trade. Never faulted them and always very reasonable on price

Just to update this.

Spoke to my local independent VAG dealer Ben Cross Motors in Carlisle asking him who he would recommend to rebuild the gearbox. I automatically assumed it would be a job farmed out to gearbox specialists, but it turns out he does them himself. So that was a bonus.

Anyhow, 3rd gear syncro wear was the diagnosis.

Ive just got the car back, having had ALL the syncros replaced for piece of mind (they are not that expensive) and a new clutch and flywheel kit fitted at the same time (car is on 81K miles so it made sense).

It wasn't cheap but its a revelation, clutch is feather light and the gearbox is so slick. You don't realise how bad some things get over a long period of time.

I'd recommend him for anyone else looking to do the same.

Mine is doing the same as yours, 3rd gear is crunching at high revs. Tried dogbone mount and vibratechnics engine and gearbox mounts. Still no better... Looks like I need to do what you have done. What sort of price range am I looking if you don't mind me asking? Never had one refurbished before. I'm from Peterborough so need to find someone more local
 
It came to £1319.

The clutch kit and flywheel came to about £420. Plus the other syncro's that didn't need replaced but were replaced anyways.

Depends how far you want to go once the gearbox is out. I could have probably saved around £600 on what I paid by only doing the bare minimum, not replacing the clutch etc. Which is exactly what I would have done if I was selling the car, but as its a keeper it was done properly.

Ok thanks, mines also a keeper so will be doing it right. Rods this month though so will have to wait.
 
I had a similar issue, resolved when i replaced clutch & fly wheel
