A Swainy just get yer plate on asap mate at the end of the day the 16 plate is irrelevant....me???? l don't bother with private registration plates, never would have one, apart from the one l saw on an old Mercedes-Benz van it read JA55 SSY..... Lol that was a few years ago dare say dvla would have grabbed that Yin

I've had the same personal plate March 1991 which was when the DVLA first allowed to purchase a not yet issued number. Whenever I buy another new car (11 since I bought the plate) it is registered with my number and goes on the new car from day one.

It's the letters and digits on the back of the boot lid that matters more to me lol

I remember back in 1996 there was a clamour for the plate P155 OFF, but all contenders were disappojnted by the DVLA decision not to issue it.

Knowing you, that doesn't surprise in the least lol

I like to keep things understated. If they sold an S3 with steel rims and poverty spec bumpers and exterior trim, I'd be sorely tempted.

Defeats the purpose of having a S3

Oh I don't know, defeats your purpose perhaps, but then my desire for general stealthiness means my purpose is probably slightly different. :sm4:

I've always felt that the bits of the car you can't see from outside are more important than the fake tinsel of prestige and performance the manufacturers throw all over them to help the punter justifying spending twice as much. That's probably why I've been just as happy in a Mazda as a Mercedes.

The S3 at least has the underpinnings to justify the tinsel, but even so, most of it is the same tinsel you'll get on an S-line, which in turn is just one of a wide variety of cars out there adorned with superwide rubber band tyres, body kits, spoilers, "sports" suspension and barely enough power to move it all. It's as though they've forgotten it'd be more fun to have it the other way around. The Peugeot 205 and 106 Rallye editions are good examples. Small, light engine, steel rims, no wieght, huge fun, and will keep a supercar in check on a twisty lane. You've got to admit that a Q-car approach has a great deal of potential for having some real fun.

Personally I want a practical hatchback with a fire breathing engine that goes like a rocket, but doesn't shout "look at me!" From the rooftops like some narcissistic attention seeking teenager. If it can flatter my lack of ability and ham fisted efforts at the helm that'd be nice, and I'd consider it a definite bonus if it won't try to turf me ar5e first through a hedge at the first hint of drizzle. Add the ability to just be a comfortable, pleasant and cosseting place to sit when not being a helmsman, and a bit of space for the wife, dogs, bikes or other accoutrements of life that prevent me owning less practical metal, and I believe the S3 represents an almost perfect compromise. It's still a compromise, but a happy one. If only there was an option available to delete a couple of the spud launchers from the back though...

Oddly enough (returning to the subject at hand here), I do have a private plate. It was a present that I've had tucked in my desk for ages but I've never fitted it to anything. Perhaps I'll put on the S3!

I get the whole stealth thing but it does beg the question why pay for a premium model just to strip the relatively few add-ons that you readily admit you've had to 'pay through the nose for'??

Might as well have grabbed an s-line, stuck a tune on it and saved yourself a few grand, plus you wouldn't have to upset yourself looking at the quad cannons at the back!!

.......and yeah, get the PP on immediately you're obviously a complete poseur!! lol

+1
I must be a reverse snob
Bought my first ever brand new car, a sepang sq5 plus, didn't want to show off (too much) so also bought my first ever pp, £250 to make my car look like a 07 plate.
My neighbour commented that it was in really good nick! Gave me a chuckle.

Hmmm....interesting
Didn't know there was the ability to do that tbh (must investigate)....that would have been useful in this instance anyway....although I do like the banter that comes with the traditional threads though

Collected my car in March 2015 and had the dealership pay the cost of having the private plate put on, they even paid for the Ultratek plates :)

Spot fff'in on :yes:

One thing that really bugs me is plate chasers. Don't get why these people are so obsessed with it.

Why???? What's the difference if it looks a 14 plate instead of a 16 :wtf:

WTF............plate snob. If you are that vain buy a proper private plate ;)
If other people clock a 14 and think less of you than if it were a 16 what on earth has society come to? Most people with new cars seem to be financing them anyway so ironically the 14 plate owner might be the smarter one.

All said with a wink.

Looking good mate - get em on !

To be honest, the car is getting old now, i'd just sell it and buy a new one.
At the end of the day you will be driving it thinking, my god i've got an old car, look at all those new reg plates.

Years ago, Steve Parrish (70's GP motorcycle Jedi and MotoGP commentator) had this plate;

And here in London, these can regularly be seen;

I suspect that Richard Porter sums up at least part of the issue with private plates though;

I don't get this, my private plate is E something and it went straight on the new car. I don't care about others seeing a new car on my drive!

When I was in college one of my best friends was a fairly staunch socialist, even selling copies of Socialist Worker magazine. After we finished our A-Levels he went on a European tour with some other fiends in his battered Land Rover. He tells a story of being in Eastern Europe, before the Berlin Wall had fallen, and seeing a line of identical, grey Trabants driving towards him. At that point he realised: the point of capitalism is that you can have what is important to you, not just what the state tells you you can have. It literally changed his outlook on life.

So if you don't want it, don't buy it. But don't tell people they can't buy it (and that is basically what aggressive judgement is doing...). Vive la difference!
