I wonder if the failures in the mechatronic units are due to the same fault throughout the Audi model range?
Like I said in a previous post I don't recall any failures on the 8v section...
What are the issues/symptoms with your unit?
It's snatchy/jerky in the lower gears and reverse and when putting it into drive or reverse there is a slight clunk. I have had one gearbox specialist tell me it's the solenoids on the mechatronic unit, I have also had another try and tell me it's the circuit board on the mechatronics and Audi have told me to try a software update!

If it's still under warranty then obviously you have to go with what Audi say.If it's out of warranty you might want to look at this..

It's out of warranty as 5 years old and I bought it secondhand with 53k miles on the clock. It does have a warranty direct comprehensive cover on it though just in case and is completely stock no mods, didn't think it really needed it for what I use it for. If I wanted more I would have bought an RS4 not just an S4, I say that in jest as it's not only just an S4 it's a pretty hot car and saved myself about £20k too.

Do you think the issue is anything to do with the link I posted for you regarding the corroded wiring ?
Also as I'm sure you are aware Audi do look into warranty claims even if out of date.I had Audi Uk give me a 90% goodwill gesture on my 8p 2.0tfsi quattro when the engine went bang.It had 74000 miles on the clock and it was 6 months out of the three year manufacture warranty...
As for being just an S4 I have to say that the one I had as a courtesy car a couple of years ago was a magnificent car and was lovely to drive..Here is a pic..

What sort of place gives you an S4 as a courtesy car??? Haha. Next time I'll ask if they've got an RS4 or RS6 kicking about! Don't think it's the wiring, guessing it's gonna be the solenoids?

If you're doing loads of stop start driving then the auto, no question.

But you will need a gym membership to prevent your left leg from withering away.

So what is Georgeinabz going to do? Would be nice to let us know what you are thinking now lol, sorry we've gone a bit off topic in places but was all to help you understand the gearboxes better ;) haha

Or steroids..lol

But that affects both legs the same so you still end up with one leg smaller than the other.
You can spot auto drivers easily.....

Right guys, I'm hoping someone will hear this and tell me exactly what's wrong with my car!!! Haha! This is exactly what it sounds like just selecting drive or reverse when stationary but not quite as severe as this yet but I'm sure it won't be long before it is. Please everyone can you all put in your 2 pence worth and hopefully it will give me some guidance of exactly what to do and what the next course of action should be as it's still not throwing any faults, thanks everyone.

Had a word with the garage and they said it could be the mechatronic box.Without looking at the car they can,t be more helpful than that I,m afraid.....sorry:-/

I bought a manual S3 and think the gearbox/clutch is good and do not want an auto, however I do almost no stop start driving. Looking at sales figures the auto is massively more popular.

If I was commuting/live in a city/doing a lot of 'company' miles then I would buy the auto, only caveat is when I have driven an auto every journey at least once it doesn't do exactly what I want when I want it so you might need to adjust a little.

As a private buyer I would be more wary of a used auto however yours is a company car.

Thank you very much, I'm pretty sure it is, just keeping my fingers crossed its nothing more sinister!!! I wonder if anybody else out there had a listen? And I've just realised I'm not in my thread and this is way off topic now and I'm very sorry.

Am not keen on the S-tronic box most of the time,it labour's in low gears all the time In slow driving conditions,it doesn't kick down when it should......it's got a mind of its own....hence l never have it in auto after its reached 3rd gear.. Straight into manual,it's a expensive option, drive it in S mode for a wee while it becomes a bit tiring... Bit in your face....

I regularly change between my manual work van and my s tronic S4 and the worst thing is when I press the clutch down in my s tronic car!!! Can you imagine what happens :sign omg:
I drove with a manual gearbox for nearly 40 years and for the last 12 years with an s-tronic and still once in a while my left foot moves forward to press the clutch pedal!!! Old habits die hard.

Right , got my 24 hr test drives back to back , an A4 stronic 190 sline Quattro & a3 3dr stronic Quattro 184.

The a4 refinement and 7 speed very impressive , if I was doing motorways and had passengers yes I would buy , but felt like a tool for a job.

But wait the A3 was noisier in engine until about 20mph then road noise took over ,it was greedier but after 180 miles there was a huge smile on my face. Both gearboxes were impressive .So request has been put forward for a a3 sportback sport 150tdi stronic in tango red , what happened to Misano?

Definitely , the a4 is ridiculously high geared 1500 rpm @ 70 , the a3 is about 1800 like my current a4 man. Both boxes behaved like I would drive , very impressive .
I know the a4 configuration will get to the a3 eventually but when? , I'm taking a hit on my p11d with the a3 118 g vs the a4's 101 , but worth it for the smile.
