TTE390 Upgrade Turbocharger VAG 1.8T 20V

TTE390 for the 1.8T begins as a brand new standard BorgWarner K04-064 turbocharger taken from the 2.0tfsi platform, we dismantle and then set about upgrading and optimizing as engineers to create the ultimate K04 TFSI hybrid for the 1.8T VAG platform. This turbo shares same spec as our TTE420 for the 2.0TFSI, proven at over 420PS without wmi. CNC modified Exhaust manifold for fitment for the 1.8T VAG platform so does not require a spacer plate others are using. Comes with CNC Exhaust manifold mounting adaptation hardware.

Engineered & Enhanced

The formula to making a TTE390 starts with a much larger 2871 BorgWarner compressor wheel, chosen because is highly efficient, new generation type with ultra thin blades, creating extremely high flow for comparative size, giving a compressor map that's very wide. Yielding a maximum air flow rate of 310 litres a second, compared to a stock 2283 compressor at 250 litres. The Re-Profiled compressor cover is machined to a optimized tolerance to ensure maximum compressor efficiency is given. Also the intake pipe is ported to give a smooth transition for the incoming air flow. We fit our TTE CNC silencer delete, we modify the turbo discharge silencer, removing the baffle internals and fitting a new straight through section, removing any restriction and its function as a noise cancelling device, and so improving the flow, giving less surge and enhancing the sound.

A key part to driving the large 2871 compressor and in turn making this unit produce the huge power advantage over stock and also the competition, is machining and fitting a far larger BorgWarner K16 curved clipped turbine and shaft, while still keeping the k04 core, this is not so easy to do. This K16 turbine gives much lower back pressure and keeps EGT lower compared to stock K04 turbine or clipped stock types other company's are still using.

The clipping of the K16 turbine is a special TTE grinding process to the turbine blade tips, curved to alleviate stress from process. Clipping reduces blade area thus increasing gas flow and so reducing back pressure and lowering exhaust gas temperatures, allowing safer higher boost level's. This process also gives a secondary advantage of removing some material, lightening the turbine thus reducing rotational mass improving moment of inertia. Dyno's have shown near no loss in response vs stock K04 yet huge gains in power and torque.

Special TTE developed in house 360 deg high performance motorsport journal bearing system is fitted. Durable at high loads with no loss in transient response.

Actuator used is uprated sprung OE unit, fitted with our reinforced clamps for trouble free operation. This also can also be modified to customer needs and specifications.

Equilibrium

Precisely balancing our turbochargers is a key critical factor for longevity and performance. Good balance improves acoustics also. Subsequent great care is taken with all TTE turbochargers with this regard. Firstly parts are balanced at slow speeds up to 2800RPM in multiple planes using our single parts machine, then components are assembled and then the CHRA are dynamically balanced yet again but this time at up to 250,000 RPM in multiple planes using our in house VSR machine to acquire the ultimate equilibrium, to a standard far higher than OEM. Supplied with a balance test result document.

How does the comp wheel on the 390 cope with surge?
2283 being a surgey mofo on tfsi as std....

got any logs of airflow and boost onset against rpm?
thx

nice so this will work with a regular 3 inch downpipe too right?

Tfsi is the other way round, the downpipe looks really simple on prawns, just a 90 bend, a flex and a 45 bend

We chose our wheel because of it's high flow capacity. It matches quite well with the turbine, we have quite a wide map in terms of flow. From 0.15 to .28m3/min.

hmmmm alooot more headache for us s3 boys then...

Not really more of a headache over going most BT solutions. But yeah needs custom pipe work and Dp. Some one like AKS tuning could handle all.

Wouldnt we Need to get the downpipe over to the other side due to the transfer box, be very tight if so if even possible?

Defo is possible and been done. Ive a customer in Germany with a S3 TTE390 to be mapped 25th of this month. Also another in France that will be done this month

Nope... High flow yes.. overlay the 2283 and 2871 compressor map and a typical flow profile from a k04 and it's possible to see why

Please do this! But along with your High flow wheel compressor map...Then we will talk this through.

soz man i thought yours was a k04 064 for some reason

I will remove my post sorry. I have no compressor map for mine, simply as they don't exist , I tested a few to see which worked and settled on the one which worked the best or seemed to work the best, compressor maps are all well and good but real world experience, such as 2280 working better on a k03 than the larger 2283 does often show otherwise, hence why the 2871 may well be ideal for this ... I merely stated why I hadn't chosen a similar sized wheel.

I wont go into details but its not so simple to use this compressor, just like a K16 turbine is not either that the TTE390 uses.

No RHD cars yet then...

No not as yet but as said im sure for a good workshop like AKS Tuning could do. And if anyone reading wants to take on a TTE370,390 project using AKS Tuning fitting and R-TECH mapping ill do a unit at discounted price to show how good this combo can be. ;)

I've done this in my s3 lhd version, I'm using 70mm downpipe and 76mm exhaust!
The turbo it's not from TTE

I could've sworn Dan said he had a hybrid -064 on his TT.

Dave did it anyway on rhd, he did say it was an ****, but what is easy on these cars!?
At the end of the day anything is possible with some ingenuity

which does'nt answer the question asked

Do you have airflow logs plotted against boost onset, as the surge prevalent on normal k04-064 in tfsi install as wello as 1.8t installs is an issue..

I've updated the Spec on TTE390 as we have made a compressor wheel change and moved to TTE 2871X billet wheel.

Advantages :

Lighter
More inducer area
Faster Spool
Higher flow

Result from R-tech on a VW MK4 GTI 1.8T yesterday using the TTE390 spec.

Relatively low boost levels for 391ps 481nm 98 fuel with WMI but not mapped for.

Solid numbers giving huge area under the curves and with great spool. Was few issues on the day.. Noisy JE pistons efecting the knock sensors and blown oil cooler pipe on the dyno ! But R-tech and owner got there in the end.

Another 1.8T TTE390 car being mapped on a autobahn in Germany this week by Labe Fahrzeugtechnik GmbH

Serious flames here in 4-5th gear

JE pistons. Larger bore and non std compression ?

Jnl built the head. The rest I have built myself.

Tfsi fitment turbo using the beach buggy adapter plate which is perfectly port matched to both the head and the turbo.

Car is awesome to drive on the road. Tonnes of usable power throughout the whole rev range and hasn't took the oem driveability of the car away in the slightest.

You were normal K04-064 before yea... what was that like? Before power/torque/boost vs the new one.
(you just added the TTE unit essentially yea?)

Was the anti surge one.

Difference is night and day between them. All I changed was the turbo. Everything else remained the same. Boost pipe, exhaust, intake.

Going to try plot the difference on the graphs if I get time. Feels tonnes better.

fun times ahead then
Vroom Vroom :)

Doesnt look a great deal, but huge delta gains

Never mind dyno numbers. This is fast 1.8T

I timed 100-200kmh (62-124)of the clocks and its approx 8.5 sec

I hope that's on a private road or track....?

As I'm sure you wouldn't like to be promoting excessive dangerous speeding on public roads.

I'm pretty sure we are all adults here, no need for the patronising post.
