hi looking at above car but its on 77k but hasnt had a cambelt change, is this a problem?

For that peace of mind, I'd get it done soon as.

Cheers for the quick response. Sorry im a bit of an amateur, will there have been any damage with it being overdue by 1 year... The car has FASH so im assuming if anything goes wrong, audi would void paying any contribution as Its missed its cambelt change.
So its not really FASH, if that makes sense ?

Well, yeah if the belt snaps then it'd be a bigger bill. Though my old A3 its cambelt was overdue by 1 or 2 years never had any problems but I wouldn't recommend it, it's not worth the risk.

ofcourse, I have always changed it on time. I just wanted to check if any damage happens if its not done but I guess its only if it actually snaps?

Might put a deposit on it in that case.

any other suggestions on what to look for when I go to view the vehicle?

Might get a local VAG specialist to inspect it prior to purchase.

Mine too is 09 170 TDi. The cam belt hasn't been missed.

On this car/engine audi increased the cam belt life to 120,000 miles, and then revised it back down to whatever it is. 120,000 divided by 3 is 40,000 per annum, so I can only assume they did this to appease the fleet companies who are their biggest customers. Imagine not having to pay a few hundred quid for cam belt changes on a fleet of thousands of cars = big savings.

Get it done as soon as you can.

No damage happens just because the cambelt is old and overdue but get it done as soon as possible. Water pump as well as it is run by the cambelt , only adds about £40 to the bill.

And while you are at it get the thermostat changed too.

Cheers for the tips. They said they're going to change the cambelt, as if its not done, it will void the warranty. Il ask them to do the waterpump at the same time.

Its up at 8k I'll try offer 7.5k including the cambelt being done but dont know if they'll accept.

Also anything to check on these cars? Any known faults? Never had a diesel before.

What's the mileage? Oil pump hex drive pin and listen for really metallic/tickety fuel pump. Other than that, solid car.

Excessive smoke when driving normally and engine warm. You usually have a bit of black smoke when starting up from cold in the morning and again a little if you are slamming the loud pedal a lot.
I would put an offer on the car without the cambelt being done and take it to a competent VAG specialist to change it. Wouldn't trust a small dealer to actually do it, bought plenty of cars in the past with the dealer saying it's fully serviced and ready to go, only to find out the next day the oil is black gunk and a dirty old oil filter screwed in the bottom of the oil pump.

Cheers. Just found out audi did change the belt in 2013 but wasnt stamped in the book.

Think im definetly going to buy. Only issue i can think is that its red, hope the colour doesnt fade as im looking to keep it long term..

If you can, i would scan the car with VCDS, in particular you should check the soot levels in the DPF :)

As mentioned earlier in the thread, there are known issues with engines fitted in vehicles up to September 2009 with the hex shaft that drives the oil pump, i've just dropped my 09 plate CR170 (engine code CBBB) into Audi to have this looked at as i'm petrified of this going. (shaft wears and no longer turns oil pump and starves the engine of oil).

With the above aside, it's a great car and great engine, good power and economy, no complaints at all :)

Don't worry about the red fading. Just needs regular polishing and waxing with a good polish that's blocks out UV rays, or was it IR rays, I can't remember which one but you can ask on the Detailing forum.

thanks for the info. So what can be done to stop the hex shaft causing issues? Is it an expensive fix? Wouldnt want the engine to go so dont mind doing any work as a pecuniary measure.

I think you just need to keep an eye on your oil levels.

Nothing to be scared about. The hex shaft and circlip are like £6 from TPS. Next time you do an oil change just change it.

Nothing can be done to prevent the wear. Even on cars made after 2010 (have a longer hex drive) the wear isn't eliminated just delayed. Later down the line it will still wear but the car will be well clear of any Audi warranty.

Oil level shows nothing to do with the hex drive wear. Mine was really badly worn yet oil level was perfect and never needed topping up between services.

Oh I see. Think I'll change it on my next service, would it be advised to change it to the 100mm hex or replace with something new?

Man no change on the belt after 77k miles? Should have seen the golf I looked at, No belt change after 132,000 miles, same with thermostats, aux belts, The lot. Those belts are bulletproof :p And it was a 2005

Thanks for all the info, top guys :)

So I went to view it, bodywork looks ok.. but it needed new back tyres - made an offer which got accepted and new tyres are included. On the negative side the leather seats were faded, I think they need a bit of dye but it did put me off a bit. Also had a few scratches on the aluminium strip on the door card, going to have to get that replaced as well.

Like I said, its FASH and not due a longlife service for a while but probably going to change the oil myself inbetween. Think im going to leave a deposit as the things I didnt like were the cosmetics of the interior.

Trying to find a local garage who will inspect it for friday but its short notice. I dont think I will be able to collect it until Monday and thats only If I can find a garage who can put it on a ramp and check over it properly.

To avoid hijacking this thread with this topic, i have created a new thread:
http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/worn-oil-pump-hex-drive-shaft-on-my09-2-0-tdi.274775/

Back on topic; It sounds like cosmetic damage only which is relatively inexpensive and easy to resolve so i wouldn't let that put you off :) ...good luck with the purchase, post some pics when you have some :)

Bought the car :D Will post pics soon...

Thanks for the thread Im still a bit on confused on the issue and whether I should replace the part or not.

Unless you are doing mega mileage, just have a service every year from now on but do the cambelt now. The aluminium door strip is about £80 from the stealers, ask @mjr901 on 'Parts Request' button on the red banner at the top of this page, he often gives a discount.
