Good evening chaps and chapettes and hope you're all well,
I'm looking for some help frankly on the subject matter as per the thread title really and this seemed like a good starting point.
In a somewhat strange turn of events yesterday I have found myself with a bit of a conundrum as I've been offered the chance to buy a very nice S4 avant.
Now it wasn't really in my current plans to buy an S4 avant at the moment, well I wasn't looking to buy another car full stop to be honest as I was looking to get into RS4 avant ownership later in the year , but, this may be a much better option for me.
As much as i'd love to go the rs4 route I keep thinking the overall cost of ownership and running cost will be quite high as I would like to use it a fair bit.

But in the meantime this S4 has dropped into the equation making the descision a bit more one sided, similar performance but without quite so much of the expense required for specific service parts etc .

What I could really use peeps is some feedback on the real world cost of owning and running an S4 avant,
It goes without saying that the road tax will be double the cost of my current avant, insurance is only a bit more as i'm an old grey git..lol , and fuel cost are allways a very changeable factor and I don't really expect to get massive MPG figures from anthing that goes like stink.
But what about service costs and service parts for the engine, brakes are pretty well the same spec as what I have maybe a tad bigger disks but not on the replacement cost scale of rs4's items.
suspension is prettywell the same as my old bus as are many other parts.

The S4 avant in question is a jan 2008 car , so prettywell at the end of the B7 production run and has all the final mechanical revisions that were introduced for the S4 B7.
It is a full spec car with all the options you can possibly get or want( also a plus for my personal usage) in missano red.
35k miles from new and one previous owner that has had it serviced every 12 months wether it needed doing or not.
It's not cheap , but if the running cost etc are not stupid i'd love to get it so could really use some first hand info on the the subject before I make a more informed descision.

cheers and have a good evening peeps
rob

Probably the smart option Rob, I know the RS4 carries serious kudos , but the S4 is a much more discrete package, without too much of a compromise in its capabilitie. I know someone who ran an RS4 , he was followed on a few occasions by people, let's say, who's interest was more than just wanting to compliment him on his car...... He used to drive well away from home on these occasions onto roads he knew he could get well away from them if he needed.
Not wishing to be alarmist, but it's something that would influence my choice.

Just thought carl, i'll have a special edition to sell aswell if I go with the S4.

Hey Rob if your looking at runing cost and was considering a rs4 defo go with the s4 as i was quite keen on a rs4 until i looked into the runing cost or service and gen wear and tear e.g brakes beening around 2k on a rs4 not pocket change.
just make sure you like the alloys or keep the ones youve just got dont want more mind changing on the wheeel front lol

Remapped S4 will hopefully be my next move. RS4 just seems too much of a drain.

Has it only done 35k, if so it should be ok.

I think your only 'cost' issue will be real life maintenance jobs.

I would look on the independent VAG garage sites for an idea of the service interval costs to make your mind up.

petrol is petrol and tax can be paid monthly (I'm in the £470 braket with the 07 3.2 and its not a massive difference over the previous £240) so my deciding factor would be maintenance.

Is it full VAG history? You may want to keep it that way you see - sounds like a keeper if I am honest!

Pretty much the same from me too.....

Wanted an RS4, but decided an S4 was the more sensible choice. Fuel is fuel, so that doesnt come into the equation, but maintenance wise, I've found it to be fairly cheap. Filters etc are as cheap as a cheap car, so no worries there. Oil is the same situation, but you need more than a smaller car, but again, same as RS4 or any bigger car, so now probs there.

I think the big factor between the rs4 and s4 is the brakes, suspension woes on RS4, and the RS4 has 2x HPFP's, so more to worry about and to go wrong. The funny thing is, I bought mine in excellent nick, mapped, exhaust etc etc, but they'd upgraded the front brakes to RS4 brakes HAHAHA, so I've still got that issue to come, but its still cheaper all round, so I was happy! Also, many people who dont know about cars (your average joe) think its a RS4 anyway, and I have to reluctantly correct them and say that I'm poor so its only and S4 lol, but the initial impression is there, if thats a factor.

Only big thing with the S4 is of course the chain drive, and its a £4k min job to fix, and is a very common problem, BUT if you dont worry about it, it doesnt have to be a problem. Plus, what ****** VAG car doesnt have chain related problems? LOL.

thanks for the replies guys i'm very greatfull for the input, all info has been absorbed into my grey cells now .
I've a few week to make a final yea or nay on the purchase as its not on general sale , so not a dealer pressure purchase which is good, anyway if all goes well and I take the plunge, piccy's will be coming soon after.
I was contemplating selling my current old bus to part fund this S4 but have decided to keep it as its grown on me now , and, I still need working car for hols/woofer/and shopping duties none of which the S4 will be used for..
cheers

Instead of spending 10k on an S4, why not spend 5k on a forged big turbo build for the current bus? It would murder an S4, and an RS4 for that matter. The only bonus of the S4 is the noise.

yes but I like the V8 config to be honest, have one in an old 34 ford flat head and it sounds great, albeit a lesser powerfull v8 that is.

I know what you mean about V8's, you can't beat the music :)

The way I look at it, it isnt always about 0-60 times! You could mod up an old fiesta or clio and get it to go faster than an s4 0-60, but why would you if you had the choice of either lol

The driveability and smoothness on the S4/RS4 is worlds apart from a 2.0 big turbo or not!

well that's it really, its not allways about the sheer speed etc, my current avant bus goes like stink but its all in a bit of a frenzy, not that I mind that, its a real buzz , but the V8 in the S4 is effortless power on tap, its not wham bam thank you mam power , its more refined power by the bucket load from the word go but still a sensible drive when needbee
