whats likly to of failed (powersteering)

evening guys this evening the power steering got really heavy and noisy too much worse then before popped bonnet to check fluids ect and the bottle is empty i checked it last sunday and it was full so looked under car no leakage weird so then looked ware the rack goes and its covered in fluid leaking threw the boot so whats likely to of failed hear the rack ?? or is there pipe work in the gap with the rack that could of split im asking as it need a ramp ect to look at and dont have access to one

thinking is rack has decided to fail after 13 years has anyone changed one before hard job ???

p.s b6 1.9tdi just in case its different to others

Your best bet is to try and clean the area fill the system back up with fluid turn steering from left to right and see where it is actually leaking from on the rack there is a number of seals that can go on the arms and pipes etc the noise you can hear is the pump running dry aslong as you don't let this happen for too long the pump should be fine and it's a seal on the rack somewhere that has gone

Exact thing happened me..was leaking out through the gaiter on the passenger side! Ended up getting a new rack in

Yea I bit bullet fitted new 2nd hand rack on Friday working well so far no leaks so just need to clean up the old fluid now lol

The second hand rack I fitted in my car is away..coming out the passenger side now..should have just bought a recon'd one.

gutted for you buddy touch wood iv not had any issues with mine trouble with 2nd hand some times you do get a dud
