I have a dilemma....
I have now owned my S3 for nearly 2 mths now and the '16' is nearing its half life cycle and will shortly be out of the limelight as the focus will soon be switching to the new '66' plate.

So....with this in mind do I now start thinking of switching my current 16 plate to my nickname Private reg which will technically 'age' my car instantly by 2yrs

Is it time to stop being a Plate Snob...or is it too early??

I'd probably leave it for another few months if I were you and get your plate on closer to September.

Having said that my PP went on after 4 weeks but then again the first two letters of the original plate were KY.......

WTF............plate snob. If you are that vain buy a proper private plate ;)
If other people clock a 14 and think less of you than if it were a 16 what on earth has society come to? Most people with new cars seem to be financing them anyway so ironically the 14 plate owner might be the smarter one.

All said with a wink.

Haha....I always like to see a good rant

SW14NYS is the closest plate I will ever get at the moment to a spell SWAINY'S which is my nickname....hence the definition of Private/Personal plate was used in the Topic....I will need to wait another 25yrs for a '41' plate to get it completely right though....but please feel free to enlighten me as to what your definition of 'Personal' is

I have already admitted that i'm being a plate snob and I do fully understand the definition of this meaning, yes I am vain, and I look for other people's approval of my purchase and love the attention my pride and joy gets....probably no different to most members on this forum funnily enough

But....I did put the question out there and I will sit back and take all the flak that comes with it....along with the sensible replies.

Bring it on

Splendid, you took it in the way I intended :):)
Forums like these should be for good natured banter rather than some of the cr4p that I read on here, life is very boring otherwise.

For me a machine should just be a machine, metal and plastic, use it as it was intended and when it wears out or you get bored buy another one - or like me just buy many machines and have a barn load. Always worries me when people call cars their pride and joy..........they are just massed produced tools to enable man to do things. Pride and joy should be things that matter, not things that I could go to a showroom and just buy another one.

But to worry about whether the number plate you seem very proud of (which I understand) makes you car look older than it is...........really?

Plates can be a good investment depending on what you buy...I paid £1300 for my plate which is now worth around £8.5K, so I will say do your home work and in years to come it could be worth a bit.

You are right in every sense that my 'Pride and Joy' assumes that I had physically poured blood sweat and tears building my machine to my own specifications.

I merely use this 'Machine' as you call it, as a means of an escape from the rat race and monotony of everyday life, so I don't use and abuse it as I like looking at and driving a nice new car, clean swirl free paint job that's good enough to take to a Carshow if I so wish...but everybody is different as you so rightly pointed out

Interested to know why someone who views their car as simply a lump of metal and plastic is posting on an owners forum used by enthusiasts?

What car do you drive @msdmjb?

Uh oh, here we go.
For commuting to the airport use, 2014 S3 bought on a whim, fast enough (and still a manual) yet subtle enough to keep in the long term car park every week. My others and other bikes are all nice (some fast, some shiny, some old) but still all machines, every A3 is a mass produced small German hatchback..........nothing to get too enthusiastic about surely?

These forums are great resource for things that go wrong, recalls etc.

p.s. I put the year in so you can look down on my old S3 - anyhoo I am out of here as all got a bit silly.

Stick it on. Won't cost you anymore as you've paid for the retention already. My neighbour always does the full year on the new plate lark but I put it on normally right away. This time I had to put it on retention as I sold my previous car with its original plate on and wasn't picking up my A3 till 10 days afterwards. If they'd tied up I'd have put it straight on. My PP doesn't age my car either way. Initial and surname. Go put it on and don't worry about numbers on it.

Yeah I know you're right, and as you say it's not the cost as its already pre-paid...just need to man-up and do it!!....lol

I'm not sure its anyone's business to tell anyone else what they should or shouldn't get enthusiastic about?

You bought an S3 (great choice by the way ;) ) so obviously you're attachment to cars isn't as binary as you make out. If you didn't get enjoyment from them, if you were at least a little bit enthusiastic about machines you'd be tootling to and from the airport in a Hyundai i10.

Simon is referring to the other aspect of owning a PP.......that it's snobbery/showing off, in itself to own one.

That's very true....
But in my case....to put it on will make my 'Machine' look 2yrs older...so in my defence I'm being snobby by wanting to keep it on a 16 plate

I see what you mean mate although I'd say the snobbery of a PP outweighs that of a new car personally........we'll call it a draw ;)

Exactly Scott I'm glad someone was awake! lol

For what its worth......personally I can't see the point of PP's....

Half the time you cant work out what they say or the significance. SW14 NYS...what the hell is that supposed to mean anyway? Or if you can work out what they mean aka "DAVE 1" you have got more money than sense.

If you a buying a PP as a status symbol to highlight you have got a new car and/or can still spend extra money on a few extra letters you might as well put one of those advertising billboards you see on taxis or driving school cars on the roof with something like "look at me and my new car" or "look at my big personal plate"

If I see a nice high value or performance car on the road go past me at a rapid rate of knots first thought is "nice" but if its got a PP its "t****"....just my opinion

to the OP's question - if you are a plate snob keep it until the 66 or if it important to you, "bought by kids" I think you said, it should be on there already!!!!!

Really don't get why some people seem to hate PP's so much.

If someone spends £100k on a nice car, then fair enough, but if someone spends £200 on a PP, they're a tosser? Eh?

I think you are getting confused as to what Personal/private means?

My surname is Swain so I'm known to my friends and family as Swainy as stated in post #5 above...which is personal to me hence the plate SW14NYS

There's no point in me getting a plate that says 'Dave' on it as this then becomes neither private or personal to me, but just some random guys name on a plate....just saying

And your statement about the plate bought by the kids....you'll need to form an orderly cue behind them to rant at me about that one

To be honest I completely agree with most of what Dave says, however I think the point here (at least for me) is how much you actually pay for your PP.

Personally, I've never owned one before I got my S3 and like Dave I've lost count of the number of times I've seen flash cars drive past me and thought what a pretentious little pr1ck!! When the shoe's on the other foot though it's a different story, nothing like a bit of hypocrisy! lol I'd rather sit on a red hot poker than spend 'a few grand' on a PP but one that says S3 followed by me and my wife's initials was a no brainer for what I paid and I'd happily ditch it when I move on :)

Er....NO...99 times out of 100 you cant tell a £200 PP is a PP as in SW14 NY's examples. I was referring to the guy with the plate "KNOB 1" or such like

I want one with 'KNOB1' ..........where've you seen that Dave?? lol

....although I'd prefer '1 KNOB' :whistle2:

My plate was £249 birthday present for my 30th from my wife. Luckily my second name only has 3 letters so it's easy to see who's car it is! If I didn't have one it wouldn't bother me either. Wouldn't be overly concerned about who has or who hasn't got a PP on. I love cars....end of. Couldn't give a monkeys what plate is on it private or original.

Never see it unfortunately, doubt it exists TBH as there is a level of censorship on PP's.

Many years ago (late 70's) a friends dad had MP 999 he bought from a Scotish lady for about £20, they were his initials The London Met Police offered him something stupid like £10000, he refused but that would have been a great use of tax payers money.....NOT
