hi guys, bear with me on this one please as I need a fair bit of advice so will probably waffle on quite a lot and I'm new to the whole posting on forums thing so if I break any rules please accept my apologies in advance.

Right! My story so far..... Owned my A3 since October last year (1st German car, 1st diesel car, 1st 4wd car). After a week of having the car it had (and still has) a nasty rattle when I turn the car off that almost doesn't happen when I have my foot fully down on the clutch but if I just turn the car off it judders quite badly and I get said metallicy rattle. By end of November I'd already changed the brakes, removed DPF and had both the DPF and EGR 'deleted' as well having the power taken up to 220bhp (allegedly) by midland remaps in Wolverhampton. No idea on the torque figures, not even a rough guess tbh although I'm sure someone could work out a ballpark figure (or could they, I don't know). Still have rattle on engine turn off.

So for the next 10 weeks happy days, in complete and utter love with the thing (apart from the rattle) then one Sunday evening whilst driving on the M42/A42 the turbo went (I was going a tad quickly). Managed to get home sounding like a steam train (woo woo) all the way back. To cut a long story short had it recovered from home, taken to a garage and repaired to the tune of £1450. Had it back and all was good.

Fast forward another 2 months and now that rattle/judder is still there but the engine or gearbox sounds/feels a bit rough at the lower end of the Rev range and feels like I'm down slightly on power. Gear changes seem OK and always have done so don't know what to think on that one. Advice please? I think this and my rattle are DMF related so I'm thinking about getting a new DMF and clutch kit fitted (Sachs with either the race or SRE organic plate) have looked into SMF but do I really need to go that way? Got about £750-£800

That's problem 1 & 2, problem 3 is a weird squeak from somewhere around the rear passenger side of the car. The car is coming up to 100k so I'm thinking shocks may be on their way out and it could be this causing it? Anyway as the car is coming up to 100k it's going to be in need of a complete overhaul suspension wise imo so what do I go for? Looking to spend about £1200 to do everything under there front and back but don't want coilovers as I had them on a previous car and found them to be a bit harsh for everyday driving.

Problem 4...Air con doesn't work and got told at my service the only way to find out if it just needed filling up was to fill it up and try it, if it don't work there's something else wrong mate was what he said to me I think so told him to leave it, it was November so thought I'd sort it around March/April before we get our annual UK micro summer somewhere between May and August.

Problem 5.... I don't think the car has ever had a haldex service!!! no record of one in the service history and, forgive me for this one, I didn't know it needed one...ever.

Problem 6....Small oil leak from somewhere above alternator that I'm ******** if I can see where it's coming from but I'm checking my oil every week and it doesn't seem to be moving.

Having done some reading up the past week or so it seems like the oil pump in these cars as standard were crap from day one and maybe I'd need an uprated pump?

Apart from all of that I need a wheel re-furb and there's a couple of tiny rust patches starting here and there that I will be getting looked at in the coming weeks.

If anyone is still reading, thanks :)

Ok well I'm sure most of these answers will be answered by a decent mechanic. In my personal opinion it sounds as though you car hasn't had a lot of love and has been thrashed! Nevertheless it's getting to 100k and things don't last for ever.

You need a new flywheel do clutch too, silly not to as it all needs to come off.

Air con...check wiring at plug on compressed, had this before when it's broke hence why it doesn't come on.

If I was you I would probably sell it, I just feel sorry for the other guy.

Clutch and DMF will be a struggle to have done for £800, being Quattro makes it a little more work, id say around the £900 mark (would be around that at my garage)

Suspension will be easy to replace inc bushes for the money you have

Haldex service should be every 40K and involves a new filter and a tube of oil iirc all in is around £125 mark (would have to check the filter cost)

Oil leaks on the BMN are a pain, my own A3 170 has a very small weep, nothing major at all but i havent found it yet

Turbo, yeah ive had to do mind, brand new unit was £640 plus vat trade, and although not a hard job is a little time consuming

Where abouts are you based?

Thanks for the replies guys, will take on board any advice tbh...except selling hahaha. In this one for the long run and don't mind chucking a few grand at it, I mean should a mechanic look at it and say u need a new engine and gearbox then **** it I will probably do it haha. Any chance a 3.0 tdi will fit? Lol

Oh sorry Phil, I'm based in the West Midlands but don't mind travelling to get good service.

Just caught up on my emails and I've been quoted around the £100 mark for the haldex service by a local VAG specialist who said that was 'all in'.

On the suspension front I've been looking at the bilstein B12 pro kit? Anyone got any experience with that kit or any recommendations? Don't want to go much lower than standard and being the S-Line I think the B12 kit will only drop 10-15mm which is great if true?

It's not to hard to do yourself (Haldex service) might save you a few bob as you have a bit to spend out on

if I'd seen it done from start to finish by someone competent then I'd have a go no problem but I literally don't have a clue about 4WD systems or diesels for that matter. I have thought on a few occasions that I should have stuck to what I know, petrol FWD but then I go round a bend in the wet way quicker than I should, come out the other side and take off. Don't think I can go back to anything else now haha.

As for the money thing I don't mind spending £100, give or take, to know it's been done properly rather than me **** about with it and do it wrong, think I've done it right and then somehow break the whole thing. :tearsofjoy:

Yea I see where you coming from. I have to say check Audi main dealer for pricing on some service items. They do a dsg change for 180£ in London, a specialist charges £150 so not a lot of difference, halved will be even cheaper. Might be worth checking, always nice to have Audi history with a car

Thought about going to Audi for the suspension but having read up on the B12 kit might go with that. Didn't think of them for the haldex if I'm honest, will give my local a call on Tuesday. Cheers.

Just watched a couple of videos on YouTube and it looks really easy to do so might have a go next weekend weather permitting....if I can find my axle stands.

Yeah absolutely mate, going to cost a bit more 1st time round as I have to buy a tool and filter but as I then plan to do it again after 10000 miles I will only have to buy a tube of oil costing about £20.

B12 pro kit ordered this morning, will post pics once they are on in a couple of weeks.

Re prob. 6 I could be diesel dripping from the fuel filter, which is above the alternator.

Will check that out soot but it looks too much like oil imo will put a picture up, haven't cleaned it off in the last few weeks and I'm actually in Sunderland visiting family for the bank holiday (bored...) so probably a thousand or so miles worth of the leak will be showing on the picture.

there's nothing to leak oil above the alternator and oil from a diesel will be black within a few miles of an oil change , if its clear then its a diesel leak

check the little vacumn pipes around there

I know what it ISSSSSSSSS :)

Adam, the leak isnt Oil per say, the flap spindle in the inlet manifold is weeping, so what you are seeing is that, the inlet manis are very expensive (and all second hand ones are worn) i replaced mine with an alloy BKD mani and blanked off the vac feed to the vac actuator

Ok so is this something that needs sorting straight away? Well I say straight away it's been doing this for a couple of months if I'm honest.

not really, it will just make a mess, to fit a BKD mani you will need a BKD mani gasket and 4 shorter bolts, its actually very easy to do

Also Phil how much cost wise am I looking at

iirc my mani cost me £40 off ebay, gasket was £8 from TPS and ive got a load of bolts already, around an hour to swap over (although i fitted mine when i rebuilt the engine)

Will it be doing the alternator any harm? Surely a fair bit of it will be getting in there. How long would the job normally take?

over time it wont do the Alternator any good but its nothing to rush out and sort asap, to swap over the mani about an hour mate

What's the difference between the BMN and BKD inlet manifold? And why is a used BKD ok but not a used BMN? Sorry if that's the stupidest question you get asked today but I have no idea.

Oh sorry when you said an hour I thought you meant while you did the rebuild hahaha. I was well and truly bracing myself for the answer. :tearsofjoy:

The BMN has flaps inside the mani, that are controlled but the vac unit and linkage (on the cambelt end of the mani) over time the flaps can break up and the linkage wears, causing a slight boost leak and oily misting over time, the BKD doesnt have flaps so doesnt cause this issue

haha nah when i fitted mine it took about 15 mins, if you have never fitted one before an hour will be plenty of time to fit it without rushing or getting stressed

I wouldn't have a clue where to start Lol. Might have to persuade the Mrs to go to Devon in a few weeks for a week away haha.

Hi Adam, if your in the West Midlands give Midland VW in Cannock a call, there prices are really good and know what they're doing. I've been using them for quite some time.

Don't mean to step on your toes Phil lol it's just incase the OP doesn't want to travel so far
