Hi All,
I have posted in the welcome section and been referred here.....

Basically I have been looking at some 2.5 tdi A4's, 1998 (thats B5 chassis I think)

First off - is this the same/similar engine as the current 2.5tdi V6 available now? I am looking for some information on power and fuel consumption figures, but cant find any that old.....
Also any information on what can be done to tune this engine, most info I can find is for the 1.9tdi engine.
It is my understanding that chipping a diesel wont ruin my economy for motorway cruising, but will just mean I use a bit more fuel while driving on WOT.

Thanks in advance.
Dan

Thanks for that link.
It is interesting that the 2.5 V6 produces only about the same increase in power from being remapped as the 1.9tdi. I hoped the extra displacement would give better results......
Is the power limited by transmission strength, turbo size or some other factor. After the remap what would be the next step......

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Pickard

and welcome. As far as I can see from most tuners web sites the gains are the same for most of the engines 1.9 to 2.5 the bigger power figures seem to come from the 3.0 + engines. I would ask around at how the MPG figure is effected but people seem to be saying that it doesn't change much and some say it gets better.

For data have a look at www.carfolio.com

:) WOF

I think the power is more to do with how much tolerance there is in the production of the components. Some of these cars seem to be right at the limit.

Hi i have a 1998 2.5 tdi
Its got a tuning box on it (recently rolling roaded at 160 bhp) not a great gain, but will get a proper remap soon. on the road it does seem to make a big difference and i do find i use less fuel as all the power comes low down so no need to rev it past 3k.
there is a few more bits otehr than a remap, basically the same stuff as for the 1.9 although its a bit harder to come by due to less demand. i have seen big turbo kits, larger injectors, front mount intercoolers, supersprint do a turbo back exhaust, cone filters etc..
the one thing that really sets the 1.9 and the 2.5 apart is the noise, the v6 sounds far superior.

Thanks Kris.
That is the info I am looking for. Sorry to ask a stupid question but what do you mean by a tuning box?

I notice in your sig that you have 312mm brakes, I take it this means standard is smaller than this?

Cheers,
Dan

Hi, a tuning box is basically like a plug in chip that is only available for turbodiesel cars. It maps the fuelling as as standard they run a bit lean.
The standard front brakes are 288mm, it was a great investment changing to the 312mm ones.

You could try a nozzle change as well as a chip, if your cars done a high mileage it might benifit from new nozzles any way...

Heres a link to the only place that I have found that has nozzles advertised for the 2.5.. did think whether the 163 nozzles were different or the 180 ones were different to the 150 bhp ones but no one seems to know...

Hi

Stick to a remap. Bigger turbos, injectors tend to give you great pub numbers but the car starts to be less nice to use. The biggest problem is quite often the fuel pump just won't flow anymore. Check out the cost of a new pump:).

have a look at the well known tuners and stay away from EBAY and the I can do anything for £50 in the pub car park (no i'm not talking about a hooker) :)

yes thats a tuning box. they are a lot of money for what is basically a resistor. having got a tuning box i recommend getting a proper remap.

I think the reason why the 1.9 can tune to the same as the 2.5 is because the 1.9 is PD and the 150bhp 2.5 is non-PD ? Not to sure whether the 180bhp 2.5s are PD though

There is far more info and kit available for the 1.9 as it is a far more common engine. The 1.9 is a fantastic engine and you should without excessive expenditure get it up to around 170hp depending which variant you start with (90, 100, 110, 115, 130, PD, non PD, there are loads). Check out www.tdiclub.com, there is more info there than you willl ever want to know. However after all that work you will be below where mine started so your choice.
The V6 that is available NOW as a new Audi is either 2.7 or 3 litre, I think the 2.5 has gone, it may continue in other VAG cars eg VW Passat Skoda Superb but i'm not sure.
If the car is 2WD manual you will get low to mid 40s mpg, higher if you drive carefully. If its quattro expect mid to high 30s. My 180hp sport quattro returns 33mpg over 35000 miles and the Turbochip made little or no difference to this figure. I've managed to get this down to 29.6 after 3 hours at 100 to 130, and up to 36 touring. Autos will be less, by around 5mpg. I do tend to drive, er, enthusiastically so you could maybe do better if you went slower.
Turbochip claim +30hp and +50Nm, I haven't dynoed it but it feels better than the 2.7TDi S Line Tiptronic i have on loan just now, which is supposed to be around 210hp stock. The chip has smoothened and quickened the power delivery, improved but not eliminated the low rev "hole", and added a big grin. The torque is just endless. I would recommend a chip every time. See http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?t=20173.
I think the size of the diesel pump on mine limits the power from going much further. Bigger nozzles are only any good if you can turn the pump up enough to feed them and then you are into smoke control for the MOT. The turbo is big anyway and posts elsewhere indicate the reason for the slow bottom end reponse is the turbo is slow to spin up as it is. I can't find anyone that says adding an induction kit improves matters, and several say it causes power loss due to heating up.
Be aware the 180hp engine is significantly different to the 150/163 engine internally when you are considering new parts.
As i now have a 0-60 of somewhere in the 8s and a top end of an indicated 145-150 i don't need much more. If you are going to start modifying components to get more even power prepare to work your way around most of the engine.
If you are going for this sort of power get a quattro. The 2WD 2.7TDi I am in at the moment lights up the traction control all the time in the wet, and feels nowhere near as stable.
Sorry i am starting to bore for Britain here, but am happy to answer any questions you've got

Sorry, I'll get my coat, or should that be anorak

Drizz check the other 2.5TDi thread going on at the moment on these forums I just found a decent guy for a remap called celtic tuning seem to know there stuff gonna get mine done this or next week so will post on results in that thread.

I am looking at getting my motor remapped but I dont know whether it will be worth spending an extra 100 squid to get the stage 1 tuning.

Has anyone had the standard remap on the V6 Tip?

The 155hp , 163hp move to around 185/190hp i believe , and the 180hp chips to around the 220hp mark.....some people report slightly less and many slightly more hp.

Alot will depend on the dyno used!!!

At the end of the day the Flywheel figure is a pure "guess"
