Hi guys so cleaned car last night pulled in garage ,got up this morning battery dead called RAC his testing gear said i need new battery. So which do you recommend audi a3 60 plate tdi 170 stop start thanks in advance :)

Is that the battery for your car then ?. I would say go for Varta as they are usually what is fitted OE. Unfortunately the stop/ start cars use the AGM batteries so a lot more expensive than a normal battery. With these cars they have battery management so the new battery should be coded to the car especially if it's a different size.

Thanks for the reply that was just one I was looking at I have to code it to the car ? I've got vcds how would I go about encoding it. Was looking at going to audi for the battery but they'd probably have my pants down

The best thing to do is look at the existing battery and get one the same size and capacity give or take the off amp hour.
The original batteries have a part number and serial number on them.
I think some models have the battery management in the CAN gateway module 19 , others have a seperate module something like 61 that does battery management.

Coding batteries to a car? that's a new one on me. I would have just got the RAC to change it for the small extra expense. Wouldn't want it to let me or the mrs down the following day.

The codings for the start stop I presume plus the rac wanted over £200

Lol so was I ,didn't realise the start stop batteries were twice as much

Bosch batteries are a good bet. thats the replacement i have, bosch s4 which is a 4 year warranty, you can get a 5 year s5 too.
Euro car parts do one for £81.99 whack in code marchmad and you will get your battery for £69.69.

Sorry didnt see the stop start bit, now empty your pockets and rob the kids piggy banks.

Thanks for that it's the AGM that's got me puzzled as well I have noticed that when I stop it doesn't activate but I know there's a lot of other factors involved with this

Hmm just to add to this will it put stereo in Safe mode will I need code ? If battery disconnected

As above radios are paired to cars these days, they are quite happy as long as they remain in the same car.
AGM is Absorbed Glass Mat, It's the construction process used in the battery as opposed to a normal battery which is a flooded cell.
AGM batteries are much better at handling repeated high discharge events such as when the car is started and also cope better with being discharged to low levels.
There are a lot of things that will stop the car from enabling the start / stop functionality.

The battery you have on your car at the moment isn't an AGM battery as it's got a sight glass on it for measuring charge. This is not something you have on an AGM battery.

Thanks for the help Mr storm your help has been invaluable was wondering why the start stop never worked seems strange I think it's the oem battery that was installed as original equipment. Any how just ordered the one one ebay is it my understanding that it will only need coding to use the start stop facilities
