Hi guys.

Im having a slight issue with my 09 a3. Reading into a few thing and trying to minimise the solution i believe it may be the wheel bearing but im not 100% on that.
So basically whilst driving along im getting a really high pitched droaning noise coming from the car.
I can say its not engine related as its not high revving nor does it matter if im in gear or it neutral the noise is still there.
I have just replaced all 4 tyres with brand new ones (old ones were getting very illegal) so that counts that issue out aswell.
The sound becomes apparent at around 40mph then gets progressivly worse at 60-65mph. If i put my foot down the noise goes but comes back when i get my speed back arpund the 70 mark.
Ive checked the oil+engine coolant to make sure its not the engine overheating leave one possible fault....... the wheel bearings  any help/advice is appreciated. I did make a recording of the noise but can't upload it here.

Thanks Sam.

Which kind of tyres did you fit I upgraded the alloys on my previous car and they came fitted with sunny tyres and you got a loud whining noise which got worse depending on speed used to drive me mad

When I had my last car I had a droning noise for a little while and I wasn't sure if it was because of new tyres, it turned out to be the wheel bearing. I found out as it failed the MOT
  • Reason(s) for failure
Nearside Rear wheel bearing has excessive play (2.6.2)
After it was fixed the droning on my old A3 was gone. It may not be the same issue but that's what it was for me.

Sorry if this solution sounds a bit simplistic. I had a low pitch droaning noise in my old Leon Cupra R which I thought could be a wheel bearing. I handed to over to a mate who worked for a garage and he confirmed it was the driverside front wheel bearing. He showed me when the car was on a right hand bend and the weight transferred to the left hand side the noise almost disappeared and was worsened by turning left. Like I said its a bit simplistic but might be worth a test, although I realised you said it was a high pitch noise.

Its not tyres.
Ive only got budget but i recently removed a set of alloys i had on it with continental tyres on and the noise was still there. Is there any way i could tell if it was the bearings myself without going to a garage?

More than likely a wheel bearing. Has the exhaust been changed in it's history? some aftermarket ones with the boy racer big bore tailpipe can make an annoying drone.

There bolt in so easy to change, and to confirm which one simply jack each wheel up, spin the wheel and hold the road spring, you will 'feel' which one is knackered through the spring

I got a speed dependant droning noise (which initially started after only replacing 2 tyres - both fronts). Ended up having to replace the haldex

That's exactly how I'd diagnose wheel bearing troubles, it's never let me down yet!
