hi all

I have an 8p s3 running custom stage 1 map. When I bought the car a year ago I fitted new Michelin PS3 tyres, they performed great but wore very quickly, they were done after 5k miles

I have winter tyres on just now but am looking to buy tyres to put on in the next month or 2. The tyres I have in mind are:

Goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric 3 - gets excellent reviews but may wear quickly?
Continental sport contact 5. I have these on my mk2 golf 20vt and they have been great, and wear seems to be ok
Vredestein ultrac sessanta - had them on my wife's a4 1.8t revo stage 1 and they were excellent for the money, and after 8k miles, tread was still good.

Any thoughts on these tyres or other suggestions? I would like a tyre that has decent performance (not worried about ultra sticky tyres) but that will last a good bit longer the the Michelin PS3

Cheers in advance

Pedro

I have continental sport contact 5s...
They seem good to me... but i never go over 30... ;)

I reckon whatever tyre you choose won't last more than 5000miles.

PS3s lasted well on mine when I used them and of all the premium tyres Michelin generally last well.

If you want something that absolutely will not die then I suppose the Bridgestone RE050 would fit but they are horrid tyres.

I'm using Pilot Supersports now and they've also lasted really well.
But I do drive like my old gran....not.

I love Michelin PS3s in the summer - great wet and dry handling and wear fairly well if car is driven sensibly. I'm not too much of a sensible driver, so I wore a set out within about 8 months, or about 8k.

Remember that S3 are not very light and hard braking will wear out your fronts quite quickly. You can obviously go for something that wears slower, but I have a feeling that you will find that handling is compromised as a result.

PS3 .235/40/18
You must be way out of alignment to use up in 5k or you drive very differently.

Standard S3 tyre size is 225/40/18...

I'd go for Eagle F1 Asy3, I have version 2 on my car and they're good.

I have continental sport contact 5s too.
Good tyres wet and dry and i dont drive like a gran....

Bridgestones won't die,look at my tyre thread.:welcoming:

I have conti sport 5s on at the mo for winter and find them pants , but I run supersports in the warmer months so maybe that is clouding my judgement

I'd say that you're spot on there about Contis - I never got on with them in my previous cars.

Hi pal,
I put 4 eagle f1 on my a3 a year ago, done about 15,000 on them and still loads of tread on them, top notch in the wet too!
Best tyres I've had!

I've had PS3's before and thought they where excellent, Got RE050's now and they are crap!!!!

I've heard many good things about the Vredestein's and obviously Goodyear are up there aswell....

Apparently the vredesteins have soft sidewalls hence the low road noise but wear quickly on heavy cars like the a/s3

Thanks for all the replies. The varying responses just show how much of a choice there is. Re the re050s, I had them in my 370z, they were at best OK, but that was comparing them to the re040s my previous 350z had which were just horrific! I don't drive like a granny, but am not a boy racer. My commute to work is mostly twisty B road which might explain the rapid tyre wear! I'm tempted to try the vredesteins as they were so good on the A4, but will read around a bit more before making a decision.

Cheers

Pedro

Geometry rapidly goes off on all the Quattros and is worth checking as I've not had tyre wear as bad as you describe with a lot more power.

Avoid the RE050s.....they are truly horrid.

I have not had uneven tyre wear but I will get the wheel alignment checked thanks

Excluding some summer running on R888s,the PSS's on mine have covered about 15k miles......they're a bit tired now,but that's not bad considering.

How do people come about buying such rubbish , as we have the tyrereviews website etc and todate on it RE050 isnt highly recommended nor has been placed in any tyre test as it's never been entered into one !

I'm not sure why,but Audi used to fit this abomination as the standard tyre for the S3.
The only good thing(and even that's a double edged sword) is that it just does not wear.

Looking forward to getting supersports back on when the temp warms up a bit

Come as standard on the 370z mate

Fair enough , guessed if it's there to begin with or so new with few reviews, you're stuck .

Especially when the tyres are 275 35 19, brand new and £250 a tyre! In fairness, the 370z was pretty grippy with them on, but would have been glued to the road with good tyres!

I'm running B/Stone's at the minute because I bought some wheels with them on and they only had a few mm left which has nearly worn out now so I thought I would just see them through and then replace them, Plus I dont have any spare cash right now with my Insurance renewal etc just being payed for....

Alex, I'm looking at tyre's now for mine, I had PS3's which i managed to de-laminate a little on the inner edge of the fronts after 6 laps at the 'ring. I'm still using it on the road so I'm not really comfortable going to the R888R/R888, but I've got some Brembos & KW's on there now so they are going to be subjected to more load & wear than last time

Have you used the PSS in 'death mode'? (im assuming you have) Are they alot better than the PS3 or is it marginal? I'm hoping your going to say alot so i can order them with some confidence! :D

Personally,I think they're a lot better.

Wet grip isn't a lot better, but the PS3s are pretty good there anyway, but dry grip is definitely better, and they remain good enough even when it's really cold outside.
I think the overall envelope if you like,is much better,so you get the good points of the PS3,but with added dry performance, and they still last well.

On the other side,I used the R888 in summer for a few years and they can be pushed really hard when it's dry,but are surprisingly good even in wet weather, providing you don't have standing water.

Cheers for the info, that sounds good in terms of grip, I was happy with the PS3 they just died off with track heat really which I was suprised at.

I want the 888s but im assuming there mileage isnt likely to reach the 5K mark?

You cant really compare track use to road use. In the past I've ******** really good road tyres on the track in a few laps. Same tyres lasted a couple of years on the road (driven hard as we all do on the road)

That's my problem really I want a pair of tyres that will do well on track but last a while on the road..... not really likely to happen is it I guess I need to buy 2 sets!

On the road, they'll easily reach that.

If you manage to kill them with road use before then, something is wrong.

If your buying 2 sets then why not just buy some slicks for your track days ?

As above.

Brake pads and tyres are easily overcome components in the extreme environment of a track .

For a track , dedicated track tyres and pads everytime , anything less will just prematurely spoil the fun .

Very good point.

I found that the R1Rs plus VWRacing brake kits and DS2500 pads gave up the fight pretty easily on a track day.
The tyres weren't up to it,and the brakes did exactly what our resident expert (DaveB) said they would after a few good tries.

So....changed the entire brake setup and went to R888s...now I need to give it a try again sometime.

The road legal Toyo's will serve you well Alex .

Like any , a few warm up laps to get heat into them , then go for it .
