Right had this problem a few months now and have just got on with it. But now it's happening on most my journeys from Brighton to Birmingham. The car will go into limp mode and the glow plug light starts to flash. This time however after quickly turning the ignition on/off whilst driving and it going away the cruise control stopped working as well. A few months ago I was told is was something to do with the over boost and the turbo splines were sticking so had it flushed with cleaner. Hasn't worked. The cruise control is also working now. I am off to Birmingham today so will see what happens but I'm thinking maybe I should just buy a new turbo. One of this re-manufactured ones in exchange for my old one. If this is the case is it just a straight swap or do I require to change other parts as well. I'm at my wits end with it and want it sorted before I decide to sell it prior to moving onto a Q5.

It's a 2.0tdi 170 2wd avant special edition

I had it with my 3.0TDI, changed turbo didn't fix it, it flags fuel pump faults now, so check your fuel pumps first, also the connectors on them (they are under the back seat)

Have you had your tank drained recently from putting the wrong fuel in?

Sounds daft but have you scanned the car for fault codes yet?

I have genuine vcds and I'm in Birmingham mate if you need a scan pm me and I'll meet up with you if needed!

Was going to say if your local I'd scan in but I'm in wath, South Yorkshire so maybe a bit far from brumy haha.

Bartley green mate don't mind meeting up? Your round the corner from me I'm 5 mins from rubery

You shouldn't really ignore issues like this. When the car is going into limp mode the ECU is seeing something it doesn't like, over boost, under boost, excessive EGT , DPF issues and a few other problems that will cause limp mode.
Sorting it quickly may save you a whole load of money, a boost leak will cause the turbo to work a lot harder and may eventually damage it.
Replacing the boost hose for £40 is a lot cheaper and easier than replacing the turbo.
Get the fault codes read and post them up. You can read and clear fault codes yourself using Carista and a £5 bluetooth dongle.

Karl.

Darren that's perfect what day are you free I'm driving up tomorrow morning at 0600

After meeting with user Darren T and finding out my DPF was full he gave me a forced re-gen via VCDS and after a blast up the motorway, Wynns DPF cleaner and the 3 hour drive back down south I can honestly say I have never felt the car have so much power n torque. It's now got me considering keeping her and taking it back to Germany.

yep, you should keep it chap, its a great looking car, forget all those nasty new audi's, stick with the best, the A4 B7 avant....

Well after thinking that the DPF Re-Gen worked the blasted think went into Limp Mode again on Sunday after having it serviced at my local dealer on Friday. When I checked under the bonnet and I'm glad I did as there was oil everywhere from where they had changed the filter. So marched back into the dealer this morning to complain.

After 3 hours of drinking free coffees and admiring some lovely new motors the problem was diagnosed.

The EGR is ******. £630 quote from Audi I nearly fainted. After a little discussion and a good will gesture from Audi for being a regular customer and the bodge job of the oil change a new total of £201 was agreed.

How is possible to knock £429 off?

Theyll glad knock it down to a cost price in hope that you keep coming back to them! Mine (2.0 tdi 140) had the same issue... but after it sat unused in a bodyshop for 3 months over christmas it appears to have fixed itself?!

Seems the new EGR didn't cure the faulted on the drive back to Brum this Friday it came back on. SNAPPED!

Had the same problem with my 2 litre 170. Got dpf removed and a stage 1 remap and have never been in limp mode again

So drove back from Birmingham - Brighton today and she went into limp mode four times, went straight back to the dealer and she is going back into Audi Friday morning. Am I right in saying that I should be kicking off the fact that they told me the fault was the EGR valve and after paying to have it fixed it isn't the problem?

Well imho it's their misdiagnosis that was the error so their fault as they replaced something that wasn't faulty......good luck pal even though you shouldn't need it.

Well not a bad day considering I was dreading going back into my Audi dealer this morning with this issue. Turns out the Vacuum Actuator has gone and they have quoted me over £350 for a £11 part. However after speaking the master mechanic as they like to call him there apparently. He has blanked it off and told me it will be fine. This from an Audi dealer is something I have never heard of. I will buy the part next month and change it myself. I have been reading through the threads on here but can't seem the find a link on how to change it, does anyone know?

Glad you seem to be getting there with the fault now.....now that's either a lot of hours to change it or there's some markup on vacuum actuator

The parts only £11 it's the labour that's why I said leave it and I'll do it myself

£120 an hour labour at Audi
Best getting a mate or local Indy to do it

I would have told them to fit it foc after charging you to fit a part that wasn't broken!
