Write off or not

Hi,

Had a 20ft wall fall on the front of my 4 month old A4 Saloon.
Part of the wall has impacted the N/S A frame.
After looking at the Picture what do you all think.
Write off or not?

Nothing a bit of filler and T cut wouldn't fix :) Can't imagine they would write a 4 month old car off for that.
If they did write the car off you should get a new one. Lucky you weren't in the car at the time. Was the wall blown down by high winds ?

Looking at the A pillar I'd say it's probably not repairable no matter how old or valuable it is.

The wall was a retaining wall, its was retain a bank of earth.
With all the rain we have had the bank just slid and it pushed the wall over, it damaged six cars parked in the parking bays

If it's on the A pillar then it ruins the structural integrity of the car if repaired... therefore, write off.

Look on the bright side, new car again!

The repair people say the A pillar can be repaired, but with the weight of the wall on the bonnet the engine is now damaged.
Currently the cost of the repair is £15,000 and is still going up.
They asked if i would be happy with the car being repaired or written off.
I asked if they would write it off, will have to wait and see what happens.
Fingers crossed they write it off

Blimey, i've polished out worse lol!!!!!!!

In all seriousness though, it’s lucky no one was in the area or cars when it happened and due to the A-pillar being damaged I would prefer a replacement vehicle personally.

Is this when to ask the question - "do you have GAP insurance?" - that might make things a bit easier if you had it.

Insurer would probably take the decision to write off rather than get involved in a few potentially difficult repairs

Check with your main insurer as well. A few of them have new for old policy on brand new cars for the first few months. I know Churchill do.

Yeah it says on their policy.

  • New for old cover on cars under 12 months old

Common to a few policies. My sister lost her car to the Christmas floods. It was under a year old so the new one is on order. Insurance is covering it.

That's where you benefit from not just choosing the second cheapest quote on a price comparison site. Churchill, DL etc might be a bit more expensive but their policies are good

Pretty impressive Thor. If your gonna scratch a car do it properly! Not really all that much you can do except laugh/cry.

The wife did the crying.
The owner of the wall is our local housing association, and the wife works for them...
My Audi is a A4 Saloon S-Line Black edition.
As the insurance company can do new for old if it gets written off, i am not sure if the new A4 comes as an S-Line black edition.
Time to go looking me thinks

I was thinking more along the lines of an A6 avant, now that would be perfect :sign yum:

Cool. If you can do it. Our guys do replacement or full payout, giving you the option of what you want to do after the event. You just have to make sure you know what you have agreed upon before "signing on the dotted line" when it comes down to the crunch so to speak. Good luck mate.

Just had an update from the bodyshop, they are going to repair my A4.
Can't say i am best pleased but....

Thor - totally gutted for you, it's done a right number on that.

I really hope that if they do fix it then it is spot on or any minor niggles and it's gonna annoy you and will end up selling

As with everyone else, surprised they are repairing considering the damage to the A pillar

That's mental, I thought the engine was moved as well. I wouldn't be accepting that. I'd be looking car replaced regardless...

No way! I can't believe that's repairable!

I'd speak with the body shop and tell them you don't want to be able to find a single flaw in the paint or you'll be sending it back, if anything rattles or doesn't line up as it should they'd also be getting it back. I'd let them no straight off that nothing but prefect is acceptable!

Just phoned Churchill and they say they will call me tomorrow to talk about my concerns, structural integrity, warranty and unforeseen or none detectable structure damage.
Could be an interesting conversation...

Car tech has evolved a lot since i was involved in accident repair (working for a VW approved bodyshop mainly insurance jobs or even new vehicles damaged in transit from VW to Grimsby), but anything that needed a roof panel replacement or with significant front pillar damage we just never saw as it got written off. Rear pillar damage was ok, distinct memories of pulling out a really badly rear ended Metro, i think my seven year old could have done it :)

Getting back to the A4, it looks like the A4 A pillar isn't the strongest steel and is also fairly straightforward to replace. I'd be interested to know whether they're intending to replace or repair the roof, suspect a roof replacement would probably have resulted in a write off.

Any pics under the bonnet?

Sorry no pics from under the bonnet as he could not open it at the time of my visit.
But said the plastic on the top of the engine is smashed and the pipe work on the top is smashed as well.
The bodyshop tell me that the roof will be replaced and the A frame pillar that the N/S/F door bolts to will also be replaced.

Wow, roof replacement on an A4, not a small job. Not structural but a royal pain in the neck to do.

That's just what the Guy at the bodyshop said,he said it is the biggest job they have ever had to do.
He was most surprised that the car was not written off.
Thanks toastyhamster for the link to the pdf, makes very interesting reading

Biggest job they have ever had to do and it's your car they are going to practice on. Doesn't fill me with much confidence.

OMG, Lets hope it don't take that long to repair mine, to be fair to the bodyshop (Fix Auto in Glastonbury) they did say it was likely to be a few months before it was all done.
I can only hope that Churchill write it off after i talk to them tomorrow.

Don't be too scared of the roof repair, it's not structural and is just time consuming more than critical. Lots of trim and wiring to move and a shed load of welds to remove and redo. If I were you I'd be looking at getting an independent inspection after the repair, AA or whatever. Also a detailer to look at the paint as they'll be covering pretty much half the car by the time they're done. I had a detailer do a report on my A4 when Sheffield Audi were being c*cks. Let us know how the call goes and absolutely kill the courtesy car, I racked up 12k in a hire Passat when my C5 VTR+ was in for repair after white van man pulled out of a T junction.

Gee Thor my heart goes out to you. This must be a horrible spot to be in. I personally hope these insurance people stump up and replace her for you. I've got to admit that's what I would want.
