Bringing this info in from this thread http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/thread...ngine-under-acceleration.181153/#post-2662090 - i didn't realise i'd posted in the B5 thread! lol

So basically i've had what sounds like a ticking noise on acceleration since i got the car. As you can see from the video the car starts up just fine and is quiet. With the bonnet up things bet a bit noisier (but i think it sounds worse on video than it actually is).

Pushing accelerator in neutral there is no ticking, it only happens when driving.

The video shows it best in the final clip when on the freeway and putting the foot down. This is what would happen in an overtaking situation. The ticking is louder higher up in the rev range and disappears on release of the throttle or when cruising speed is reached and like in the B5 thread you can hear it way more when driving next to a car/truck/within built up areas.

ordered a manifold to turbo gasket and will chuck it on to see if it's that... fingers crossed it is. Anyone else had this?

@ayfreetee - using 98RON

@SHUk - can't be as i've done the delete thinking it was mainly the carbon filter (which was contributing) but the noise is still there! :(

@Tom93 - this is next on the hit list... have ordered one from Audi and *fingers crossed* that fixes it.

mainly wanted to get evidence of the ticking sound as i couldn't really find any videos or sound clips that properly show what's happening...

Also if anyone else has had it... but seems like not many people do! lol

Just had a listen to the vid, does sound like some sort of exhaust leak, turbo gasket, mani gasket , or maybe even a cracked downpipe/ exhaust.

sounds like valve lifters

but if it's the lifters why would it be doing it only when accelerating/boosting? would've thought lifters would just be noisy all the time...

Just had a listen to the vid, does sound like some sort of exhaust leak, turbo gasket, mani gasket , or maybe even a cracked downpipe/ exhaust.

better not be a cracked downpipe! it's just been upgraded to a 42DD one... LOL
i had the sound before the DP upgrade anyways... so def. not the downpipe. Will report back when i get the turbo to manifold gasket changed

Check the mani for cracks when it's off.

Loose bolts on manifold to turbo had exact same problem mate

might just have to suck it up and do this job... i have the manifold already. should i get new bolts too?

I would. Should easy job to replace the gasket. New bolts and find the torque spec also.

What manifold you have? Turbo? Turbo gasket's tend to be a weak point.

Yeah the turbo to manifold one = 06A253039H

fixed this little mutha!!!

I had a suspicion the noise was louder with the driver's side window down and the ticking was definitely pressure related as i noticed it would only happen on boost.

I remembered a while back when i changed the pre cat lambda sensor i'd accidentally knocked that check valve out = very hard brakes. i plugged it back in... got brakes back but didn't think anything else of it. Ticking was there before i did this and still there after plugging it back up.

Investigated further.... to find the "hard hose" under the check valve...

(the blue is heat shrink that i thought would help but didn't LOL

This is a continuation of...

and continues to behind the firewall where i found the cracked piping.

Thank god it wasn't valves/manifold gasket or whatever else it might have been! So good to have a quiet car again

:D
