Afternoon guys,

So part of my B6 cabriolet modding extravaganza I managed to install LED fog lights.
As we know the original lights, (sides, main, dipped and fog) are all a warm 'yellowish' hue.

I opted for 6000k HID for the dipped beam (which I love) and also wanted Fogs to match but not via a set regular incandescent bulbs. I just wanted something a little updated and I know T8ups (user on here) sells a great pair of 'white' H11 bulbs but was itching to go the LED route as I know not many have done so.

What I did

Searched like mad on eBay and Amazon to find a 'proven' set of H11 LED fogs that matched the same, (if not better) lighting output as my old original fogs.

What I purchased

Its ESSENTIAL that you buy LED's that state the 'lumen' number in the description. There are many charts out there that will tell you how many lumens you need to match the wattage of an OEM bulb that our cars come with.

As we know, our cars use a 55w bulb for the Fogs on 12v system. The equivalent lumens you would need are around 800 to get the same amount of lighting power as 55w bulbs.

So I bought these bad boys..

Amazon product

These LED's have between 900-1000 Lumens so I was expecting them to be a bit brighter. THEY WERE!

Our cars are also CAN-BUS so when buying non OEM bulbs we have to make sure the wattages are the same or we get the infamous 'bulb out' error on the dash. To counter this, I bought these too..

Amazon product

To be on the safe side I installed them with the LED's and voila...no Error when switching on!

Pic below

Sorry the pic wasn't better quality. It looks as though they are still a tad tad yellow. This is not the case at all. They are a PERFECT diamond white with an ever so slight tint of blue.

Hope this is helpful to anyone.

I've been looking at HID kits for my fogs but I'm interested in these LED's but your links aren't working.

DrStrange, could you take a pic in the car, with just sidelights on and show how much road is seen with them? My s4 cab I changed the bulbs to 6000k cos I hate 4300k, but they really aren't bright. Might need to change them. You know where your bulbs are from? Mine are the d2s, are yours?

You should of put 5000k bulbs in 6000k are to blue

I always had 6000k in my Subaru (aftermarket hid kit might have made the difference). I think I even had 8000k which was brighter than what I got now. Maybe I will change to 5000k and see if there is any difference. Let's hunt on Amazon

Edit; is probably cos they were h4s and not the projector d2s in the s4..

Dam Tapatalk app won't open the links. Just ordered a set. All I need is a set of LED tail lights and I don't think I'll have any normal bulbs in the car :)

Will it make any difference to how well they work as fog lights by adding these brighter LED bulbs?

8000k is almost purple don't see how you can say they brighter then 6000k

I'm not saying 8000k is brighter than 6000k, I'm saying that my Subaru with 8000k gave off more light than my 6000k in my Audi. Maybe the bulbs in my Audi are faulty or just not good quality, out it is the h4 vs the d2s, but I had more light on the road in my Subaru

Also, the 8000k were very close to the 6000k I had. They were probably 6000k with an 8000k label on them.

I used these, H 11 Cree from T8ups, not as fogs though, as DRL's they do go off when I turn either the sidelights or headlights on so as not to have the chav look. A very bright bulb nevertheless.

I'll take a picture for you when I finish work.

Sure I can Matt. I'll take a pic tonight and post tomorrow.

Thanks for re-uploading the links.

Yeah, the stock colour temperature for our headlights, sidelights and fogs are around 4300k or lower, which are candle yellow.

Mine arent D2s, they are simply a £20 6000k kit off Ebay which work a treat. 6000k are classed as cool white with a tiny tint of blue. I do admit they are my 2nd set but for £20 i dont mind. (referring to my dipped beam H7's)

Hopefully Matt sorted this out for you. Let me know if not.

With regards to a HID kit for the Fogs vs LED. It just depends what you prefer as the prices are the same nowadays. I must admit, the HID's look very good with good light output. I just wanted something a little different and didnt want to run HID's for the dipped beams as well as the Fogs.

Both will look good im sure :)

They say that LED light bulbs are lower power draw as well as the potential to be brighter which was a win/win for me.

The reason why i got them is because the lighting quality of LED's look a bit more crisp in my opinion.

Go for it if you can :)

Picture as requested.

Wow! Very nice!

These are likely to be a brighter than mine! Im happy with my lighting output though.

Just remember guys what colour in 'Kelvin' you're after.

These look like 5000k ? (perfect ice white)

Dan.

Think I'll have to find out what Kelvin my HID's are as can't remember and get some matching LEDs in the fog lights now after see the pic,s to guys have posted.

Hi Guys,

Some more photos from different angles to get an idea of what the FOG LED's.

This photo was taken at twilight. My HID Xenons are 6000k and from this photo it made the contrast in light look more prominent. This is not the case as they are almost identical in colour.

Taken at night with only the Side lights and FOGs on. Not the dipped. Hopefully shows that they are not bad at all!

..And Finally. This pic is probably best as it shows accurately what they will look like in reality at night.

Thanks to everyone that`s posted, god my head is overloaded now do you ever get the feeling you shouldn`t ask but lots of info to look at :hubbahubba:

I wouldn't mind a fog light upgrade. Mine are as dull as a cheap keyring torch. They are completely unnoticeable since I installed the S4 Xenon headlights in my car. I can't even tell the difference between on or off, even in thick fog.

Pleasure CabbyChris.

Sorry to overload you with info.

The good thing is, either type of upgrade whether Xenon or LED is easy to do. Im not electrical expert and I found this easy.

Whichever you decide, let us know.

Hi Jamie,

Cant go wrong with a fog upgrade.

Check my links out if you like the 'look'

Piece of cake to install too

Great write up bud glad I see this I also want to do a fog light bulb upgrade :)

Thanks Pal.

Yes you should definitely do it. Takes 30mins start to finish. Go for the LED's. You'll be impressed for sure. If you choose a different LED other than my links, do make sure the 'Lumens' are over 800.

Some LED's are shockingly bad in terms of light output.

I will do mate thank you that's something I didn't know

Did you notice when they are on with the load resisters that the resisters get very hot when did you fit the resisters mate

You're welcome. My boss is an LED expert so he's passed on his knowledge haha.

With regards to the resistors, i bought them and the bulbs together as I didn't want to try my luck with the potential flickering light issue or bulb out error on DIS.

To test i left them for a good 30mins whilst driving and the metal resistors weren't in any way hot. I think these ones are good quality due to the thicker metal material.
