How do you remove the chrome S3 exhaust tips?

Top bloke !!

Looks like it's beneficial to somehow get the back end up in the air to see and access the clip. How did you go about this ?

I did jack it up on one side to get it off but took the rest off without the car jacked up.

Will get a pic tomorrow of the pipes without the tips.

£132 for all 4 pipes? :greedy dollars:

Yep 136 bangers !! Hopefully it'll mainly be the inner ones that need replacing rather than all 4. To keep a £35-40k car looking mint it's worth it to me plus it's also a bit of a hobby play thing.

825 is left, 826 is right - i wrote it on each one for you as i thought you might not know lol - although you'll have to break through the air pockets protecting them to see that.

Cheers

Mike

Cheers for that mate..How about a video of you taking them off??
:friends:

Its pritty much the same but in reverse. There are no screws but twist clock wise to about 90 degrees. It will loosen itself off but there will be some grinding noises. I found loads of little stones but a scourer in the kitchen sink got rid them went polishing.

Just got mine off in seconds! Try this...

Get yourself a cheap rubber mallet - like you'd use for tent pegs? Cheap off eBay etc. No need to twist, prise, lever back the tabs - just get under the car and lightly tap around as much of the trim as you can, straight backwards! They suddenly release and literally fall off! They are now enjoying a sauna in the dishwasher...
To refit I'll simply tap the other end back on, padded with a microfibre.

No mate, lay on my back (on my soaked gravel drive!) and hardly swung at all - you'll see when you're down there that (a) there's not much room to move and (b) you don't need to really whack them! I held the hammer near the head to get better control too. Good luck! (It's easy!)

Got rid of most of the crud you'd otherwise have to cut through with polish. But very disappointed to say that after over an hour of elbow grease, I've not had much luck getting the baked on soot off - there's still a black mottling around the bottom of the tip. We've got a dealer meet down here tomorrow, I might raise it with them.

I might have a go at getting the tips off during the week in work..I work in an engineering shop so have a bench mounted polishing wheel. so that should sort out any issues with sooty staining...:friends:

Has any one taken this issue up with a dealer?
Its not a wear part and surely you would expect them to use a material that didnt degrade with exhaust emissions?

That's a good point Steeve - mine have only very minor pitting as they are cleaned weekly but would be interesting to hear what the dealer would say if presented with a worse case example.

Think the after market tips are double skinned to avoid this.

I wonder if rechroming is also an option with maybe a thicker coating ?

They absolutely should have been polished stainless steel, as opposed to cheap chromed rubbish!!!

Don't take my word for it but I think Audi would put it as a perishable item ie it being part of the exhaust system?? But you might be covered as it being 'fit for purpose' and shouldn't show signs of wear so early in it's life??

Before... This was by far the cleanest off the 4 tips, but didn't think to take pics till i was almost done cleaning them unfortunately...
IMG 3298

After... soaked in WD40, then polished with Autosol, applied IPA to remove all polish/grease and residue and then applied Finish Kare 1000p Hi-Temp paste wax. didn't turn out that bad at all to be fair :sign wow:

Some shiny tips appearing in this thread.

That's another job to do on my Wash Car Wish List.

I'm assuming once the tips have signs of pitting there is nothing that can be done other than replacing or living with them?

Not sure if grinding back and re-chroming is an option ? Would certainly work out cheaper than replacements.
