Rhyso's Family Wagon

In short I updated the firmware on the MMI which means I can use a sim card in the car for data services and Google Maps and use my iPhone to make and receive calls. Prior to the update the car could only use one or the other but a number of owners complained to Audi who released the updated firmware for older cars; new cars come with this capability already installed

So before doing the update, data for google maps would come from your iPhone? Was that a bit slow?

No and that is the issue. The iPhone doesn't support rSAP so you could only use it to make calls. For data you had to stick a sim card into the dash BUT then it takes over and is used to make / receive calls and the data side of things

With the new update the sim card in the dash is used exclusively for data whilst the iPhone now handles all the phone calls

I was hoping by using Google it would perhaps update the map database but no; all it does is give you a Google overlay of the existing maps in the car. Sadly for me that's about 4 years old now and missing many new roads that have recently been built

I don't fancy forking out for the latest maps to find the newest road(s) aren't on there :(

Ahhh i see. So you've just got another sim card contract to just use the data. Another expense!!!

Its a pay as you go sim. To be honest i doubt I will use it that much but it's nice to have the functionality :)
It's all the audi connect stuff too not just maps - better traffic info etc as I understood it?

Yes it allows you to go online etc etc. Haven't used the traffic info side of things yet. Ideally I need to update my maps but I may have to wait. There has been a couple of new roads built near me and I don't want to pay for maps which don't have them :(

The Audi maps are pretty rubbish. There are roads which have been going for a number of years but the sat nav still thinks I'm off-road! Also sent me down one way streets in Sheffield and one of the guys told me it had been one way for 5 years or more. Also doesn't seem to update a lot of the speed limits which is worse.

Weird as I didn't have any of those sorts of issues in my A3??

I hear you Rhyso :***: what's that .02 p all about??? lol

It's a joke. Where do they get the totally random figures. It's like they have a random number generator and what ever comes up is the quote! It's like buying a pint for £12:37...

Who knows....what i cant get over is i can go and buy an £80 TomTom and get FREE LIFETIME UPDATES......but buy a £50k (ok £20k as I bought it 2nd hand) Audi and I got to pay every year if I want the latest maps......

This is crackers.. I actually <oh the shame> _paid_ about £170 or so to update the Maps SD card from Audi back at the end of 2012 for my previous car.. .there was a road system near me that changed and it was infuriating having the sat nav complain the whole time (Don't ask like my wife does, "why do you have sat nav when you know where you're going!!?" - I do it for the traffic updates!) .... and I've asked about getting her Audi A1 configured for Sat Nav - it is "ready" with the spec she had, needed no hardware only config.. and a map SD and I asked for a quote from Audi to do it _and_ I'd provide the map (the old SD card from 2011 from the replacement mentioned above) - - quote, around £357!!! Outrageous.
My hunch @Rhyso and @AtotheK is that this is Audi protecting their second hand value for poor burgers like us who part exchange... it's a simple upgrade for them to do, that will cost them next to nothing and they've instantly added value or at least desirability to the car...

Had my new tyres fitted today - UniRoyal Rainsport 3's. Already a massive difference at motorway speeds as the annoying noise and vibration has gone!!

Did have it on the alignment ramp too but I have to rebook for next week. Audi in their infinite wisdom fitted the camber adjustment right next to the strut so the only way to adjust it is to remove the wheel!!

GREAT pic @Rhyso
Just wondering what tyres you were on with the noise and vibrations?

Just wondering what tyres you were on with the noise and vibrations?

Had to zoom in for that as I was stood at the entrance lol

Fronts were some cheap crap called Kinforrest that the selling garage had to stick on to pass the MOT!! That was AFTER they had agreed to buy me a complete set!! It also felt like they weren't quite balanced properly. Thankfully the garage I use are spot on and I've never had any balancing / vibration issues :)

Rears were Avon's of some description; they were on the fronts prior to the MOT but were down to the wear indicator hence why I haggled for a complete new set :)

Do you run these all year round? By the name they sound like winter tyres but I must admit I've not reviewed them...

They are not winter tyres. For the A3 i had a set of 16's with proper winter tyres on which were excellent in the snow but also when we had monsoon conditions

This year I didn't fit them because it has been too mild but on the occasion were it has been very cold you could feel the lack of grip on the UniRoyals. But in the heavy rain they still coped very well :)

Not sure what to do for the A6 come winter as it has Quattro whereas the A3 was FWD

Might do the same and get a 2nd hand set of alloys and buy some part worn winters :)

Puddle and door warning lights fitted to the rear door cards :)

Bit of a mission as I couldn't find any how-to's on removing the door cards so I created my own! (See separate thread http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/how-to-remove-rear-door-card.262307/

Also because I got the little LED's in the interior door handle I had to splice into the earth wire needed for the lights

Loom and lights

Area that needs to be 'modified'

Will hopefully get some night time pics :)

Ha bit of a story.......

My mate Nick ordered one from Cheshire Oaks Audi via their Ebay shop@ £75 delivered (cheapest in the UK!!)

He came home the other day to find the packaging damaged and the tiniest of scuffs on the lip of the boot liner. One clever photograph later and a phone call and they agreed to send him another new one and KEEP the existing one!!!

He packaged it back up, shipped it to me and we split the total cost down the middle which worked out at £43.66 each for 2 genuine boot liners :)

You can't even see the scuff as its against the boot lip lol

It means I've bought a complete set of mats and boot liner for the same price as just a set of mats; well chuffed with that :)

Really need to stop spending.......

Sold the roofbars from the A3 and the Roobox company knocked £50 off and added free delivery for a new set so these have only cost me £80 :)

Treated it to its first wash in a month of ownership

First time I got to really look at the paintwork and its in a sorry state :( been through far too many car washes in its life time so it needs a good machine polish to bring it back to its former glory

A month into ownership and i've covered over 1000 miles. Performance and comfort are 2nd to none; MPG is a bit of a shock :whistle2: but it is steadily improving as I'm still very much learning how to get the best out of the gearbox and engine. Its a very different drive to the A3

All in all I'm happy :)
