Hi people,

I am new to the forums and Audi cars so bear with me. I have just bought an Audi A3 Sportback 1.9TDI with 190k miles on the clock for £2100 I bought it because it looks nice and with it being a diesel it would last? Would this be the case? I haven't got much service history but has 12 month mot don't know about the timing belt history either Please could you advise me?

Thanks in advance
Dean

The 1.9tdi block is said to be bulletproof. But with anything it needs looking after in order for it to give you the higher mileage.

I'd defo get a major service done on it, and check in the service book if the timing belt has been done, if not I would definitely get that done along with the water pump and thermostat. The intervals for timing belts for Audi are every 4 years or 60k miles, whichever comes first, so your car should be on its third timing belt, if not fourth. Other than that I'm not sure if anything else needs to be done.

Mileage is almost irrelevant if the cars looked after properly.

My 2008 S3 - 160,000

Brothers 2004 A4 1.8T - 290,000 (still on original exhaust/turbo etc.

Hi Dean as above if the car has been looked after Mileage is irrelevant. I have a 54 plate 2.0 tdi that has just hit 188k. Was 182k when I bought it ,I'm fortunate that the timing belt was done with 12 months MOT to boot.

Just a quick update people the car is now on my drive an with all the service history I actually have is pretty good I have a receipt here of the belt and water pump being changed at 177000 miles so I am laughing really. The job cost over £400 too. This how much about it should cost? Thanks again for all your help who replied! Dean

Yes approx that price. Also, Audis are usually on long life service intervals so they're serviced every 20k, but I service my car every 10k or every year, and I'll advise you to do the same. A lot of people will also agree to service 10k/year.

When you say service is should it always be an Audi dealer or could a more private company could do it. Sorry to be so new it's the best car I have had so far my last car was an mg zr Haha. Dean

Ha it's alright, we've all been there. I don't get it done at dealers because they charge way too much, but I don't get my car touched by any side road garages, I use vw/Audi specialists. Where abouts you from?

Yes I fully agree I bet it would cost to much at Audi. I live in Wigan if you know where that is. There is a bmw vw garage here now you mention it its new but looks expensive haha

Most things cost nearly double at Audi. Best thing to do is search, just type in Google Audi sepcialists Wigan, it'll throw up searches, or specifically search it on here, there must have been someone who's already asked it.

Just a heads up, I had a quick look and you have awesome gti in Irlam (20miles from Wigan), the reviews say they're good and they're vw/Audi specialists. Read up on them.

I would use specialists for any bigger jobs, but for routine servicing I would say use a normal independent or even have a go yourself! For example, for an oil change, I spend about £23 on good oil, £4-£5 on a decent oil filter and about £30 on labour. When I first bought my A3, I thought that being an Audi it would have to go to specialists for everything, which is why I spent a huge amount on the first service. In hindsight, I wouldn't have, because the car isn't that much more complicated than other cars on the road, especially when it comes to servicing. You could even argue that it's slightly easier! For example: Oil filter and fuel filter on a 2.0 TDI (PD engine) is within the engine bay and easily accessible, whereas to change a oil and fuel filter on a MK5 Fiesta you have to go underneath the car.

It's true what you're saying, but the reason why I personally use a specialist for servicing is purely for the stamp lol it always looks better in the service book and I feel a car with a book full of dealer/specialist stamps is always a USP when it comes to selling. But to each their own.

You have to be wary of a normal garage that services any car, they may well be your trusted local garage and do the job right. My only gripe is they don't use VAG grade oils, they use the same bulk oil for all cars. Not want you need, especially with the PD engine. You could of course supply your own oil to be sure.
I do my own servicing and sign the service book myself with the date and keep the service parts invoice, that way a future owner can see that I've taken the trouble to service the car correctly.
Either way, a car of 2004 vintage is not going to be worth any more than a full Audi S/H car.

I know what you mean, it's always nice to see a stamped book, I always tell my dad to not forget the stamp when he gets his car serviced! I like invoices slightly more because they give some more detail, but having both stamps and invoices will be better.

Good point about the bulk oil, I always supply the parts when I get my car serviced, so I make sure that the oil I supply meets the correct VAG specifications. I always use 5W30 oil that meets VW 504 00/507 00. However that said, when I looked to see if there were any PD engine specific oils, I found this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MANNOL-OE...736077?hash=item519f0c534d:g:ebsAAOSwhcJWLhXE

This is just a random oil but it states that it's "specially made for the lubrication of all TDI engines with pump injectors" even though the grade is 5W40 not 5W30 so this oil would be slightly thicker. Have also seen that it's for VW 505 00 which is slightly older than VW 507 00. Would anyone here use this oil? Sorry that this is slightly off-topic!

Right ok. This forum is so good you people are so helpful thanks. If I ever get any problems I will definitely turn to these forums. So my car is a PD engine even though it is a 1.9 TDI and not a 2.0 TDI? I did change oil and filters etc in my old car myself which the oil filter was underneath the car so the Audis filter being in the engine bay sounds easy? I have the computer on the car saying Service! 84 days over service and 8100 miles over due so I will have to take it into a specialists for them to reset this after a service? So should you always use 5/40 oil? And is it semi or fully synthetic oil? Thanks again in advance Dean

Yes the 1.9tdi is a PD engine, and any garage can reset the service interval for you, it doesn't need to be a specialist. And in terms of oil I'd always use fully synthetic, someone will come along with better info lol

VW504 or VW507 will be fine for your car. 5/40 or 5/30 have very little difference between them and changing oil every year is more important.
You can reset the service indicator yourself, shows you how in the Owners Manual.

Turn on ignition---pull knob to the bottom right of DIS panel until Service in xmiles or xmnths appears --release the knob--job done.

As above, you have the PD engine (both 1.9 and 2.0 are PD engines). Yeah it's much easier to access. You can reset the service indicator yourself. According to the manual I have, it says:

1) Switch on the ignition
2) Pull (and then let go) the right stalk on the instrument cluster. The word "SERVICE!" will appear in the display.
3) Pull and hold the button until "SERVICE IN----KM----DAYS" is shown in the display, then let go.

Always use fully synthetic oil, it is just better! I think 5W-30 should be fine, just make sure it meets the VW 504 00/507 00 rating.
