What have you done today?

Got time off work (for good behaviour) so took advantage of a lull in the wet weather to take some pics...

Bit the bullet and decided to repair my lcd on the cluster during the week, i've had the screen in a box for quite a few months already but i was just scared to take on the challenge also ordered a soldering air gun (needed to remove the old lcd ribbon)

This is how it looked

IMG 1324

This was the condition of my 1st screen that came it was all cracked up
IMG 1720

eventually ordered another one and installed it during the week, this is the first time im actually doing something like this

IMG 2198

cleaned up the contacts

IMG 2199

I am actually surprised i got it right the second time (1st time some solder was touching between the contacts and the lcd was just blank)

i also bought some ice white leds for the cluster but im not ready or confident enought to take on that challenge yet

Fitted new plugs, haven't changed them in too long. Ngk gapped to 0.70mm. Fitted Sharran helper Springs to rear callipers and adjusted the hand brake. Fitted a vent pod boost gauge, wired it all up but not connected vac pipe yet. Managed to cause a fuse warning appear on the mileage part of the dis, need to fix tomorrow followed by oil pump, filter change.

Have you got any more info on the Sharan helper springs? Part numbers, price etc?

Cheers

Fitted a new oil pump, surprised at how clogged the pick up was since I only cleaned it 3 years ago. Also found parts of the cam chain tensioner in the sump so that's the next job.

How often do you change your oil?

i change it around 6 months or 6000 miles. this time i let it go 10~ months. surprised that the oil coming out wasn't as bad as i thought it would of been. also no burnt on crap in the sump at all, wiped over with a paper towel and was clean as a whistle. will be taking the rocker cover off to do the cam chain tensioner so will see what its like under there. considering i'm on 192k miles and hasn't has an easy life i'm expecting the worst.

OK so have tackled doing suspension and downpipe all in one hit. This is the first time ever doing this kind of work so i was taking my time. When i CBF i stopped and even took a couple days off it just cuz needed a change of pace.

While the subframe was off... this came off too (broke some bolts hahaha)

the tools of choice to remove the biatch downpipe nuts

21430-project-val-img_3893-jpg

and a bit of worry as i saw this...

21431-project-val-img_3897-jpg

however once all bolted up it doesn't touch the steering rack heat shield (sorry pic is upside down)

21436-project-val-image-jpg

and last thing before Val goes back into running around. Some people say take them off, others say it'll help... i dunno! Will see how it goes over the summer and monitor things when weather starts becoming wet again.

I did have to undo the down pipe again as when I first put it on I tightened it while I pushed up on it (because it was touching the steering rack heat shield as pictured above). On starting up it was hitting the heat shield above causing a rattle on startup/reverse. So undid the driveshaft, drivshaft heatshield and the 3 DP nuts and it dropped itself down into perfect position - clearing the heatshield. So take note if you've got the 42DD downpipe to bolt it on as it sits on the turbo bolts and NOT to push up on it as it WILL clear everything once everything's back together.

I think that's all for under there! Everything feels great!!!

Coilovers - nice and smooth. Not harsh or anything like that. I went flown some bunny roads and yes. It's firm but not uncomfortable. You really feel it on turns. I point the car in a corner and it goes in. Hard. I think upgrading the the back sway bar has really made this possible as well! Most noticeable is no more body roll which I had on the stock suspension.

Bushes - Well no more crackling noise/leaf stuck somewhere in my wheel area noise and I guess it's all helped to firm things up. I do not feel any vibrations or whatever that I've read about when people change the dog bone. I've changed both the big bushes and the round little one and vibrations are nil. This is still under 100km's when vibrations are usually felt.

The downpipe - Oh god the downpipe! Don't know why (or if it's just me imagining things) but it sounds like the induction noise has lessened even though I put a larger filter in there however sound when lifting the foot off the throttle is brilliant. Don't even know how to describe it. Also when I hit 3.5-4k Val pulls some kind of trick and pulls even harder!!!

Will log to see if there actually have been changes or if it's just because I've become accustomed to driving a 1.6L EG Civic.

Am proud as punch knowing the only thing I paid for installation wise was some of the bushes. Everything else was done manually. Not even pneumatic tools. So. Time to enjoy!!!

Not sure about the vacuum fitting, but the other two are easy jobs and cheap parts...

Not car related but today I'm starting to strip down my good friends Honda cbr1000 to see exactly what damage we have after his 150mph crash at the macau gp in China.

Finally got my car completely bolted together and running. Fitted the EGT and boost gauge. Took it for its first shakedown run around the block. All seems okay but couldn't really give it any beans.

Need to get it MOT'd now so I can tax it and put some miles on it before I fit my AEM kit and get it remapped.

Happy days.

Looks awesome that! Was this done with rattle can spray!??
Seriously?? No mate I'm a professional painter. It was done with compressor suction fed devilbiss air guns. I wouldn't use rattle cans on anything, you'd never get that finish with one.

Got my date through for the Gordon Shedden experience at knockhill. Wife booked it for my 40th. 30 laps with tuition from Gordon in a type R then two hot laps can't wait

Building my fuelling system to remove the inline pump, I'm using a 800bhp rated, e84 compatible ( never will run E85 ) fuel pump and standard S3 pump outside the swirl pot to pull the fuel from the saddle bag fuel tank

Might have misunderstood the setup ..

1) Is the S3 pump pulling from the far side of the saddle ?

- eg in addition to the venturi or instead of

2) if yes to 1), are you running without a continuous circling of fuel (as with stock venturi 2nd pump system) ?

Yes it is used to pull the fuel from the other side of the tank, it will be running with a continuous circling of fuel as it will bolt to the side of the factory swirl pot.. This is a copy of Gulfstreams set up he uses on his 700+bhp Seat Leon with great success

i finally have back seats again!!! and a sexy new trim

Had a little "play" with this 330d. Surprised but there's not a lot between this and my stage 1. Mine was slightly quicker, quite pleased because this thing has 258 bhp and 413 lbs/ft and one of the quickest gearboxes in a car I've ever driven. Suppose at least I know mines running pretty good.
