as I am new to this modern Audi age I've been reading up on this vcds carry on ! I usually do all my own discs and pads but looks like I won't be able to do the rears :rage: what exactly happens ???

As far as I know, you need to put the rear brakes into 'maintenance' mode to change them, or the car may try and operate them. Maybe @DJAlix can shed some light on it as he's the VCDS genius! :p

Bad patter can't service my brakes without vcds :rage: by the time I've bought one I'd be as cheap putting car into dealers !

There will be a time when you will not be able to change oil without going to the main dealer!!! It's sad when you look at it long term, imagine a 12 year old S3 (or any other car) being owned by someone who can only just afford it and then they find out they have to take it to a main dealer to have the brakes done! The days of doing your own jobs are coming to an end!!! :(

Manufacturers and Dealers want to retain as much after sales works as possible as it's a large percentage of their business after all. Normal mechanical procedures and tools are changing and if your a DIY'er it can be both time-consuming and a little costly to play catch up :( VCDS and similar tools are a must these days.
