Hi,

Last week I came back into Audi A3 ownership, after previously having a 56 plate TDI170 and a 09 plate TDI140..... and then a short spell with a 13 plate VW Golf, I'm now the owner of a 15 plate TDI150, and so far the car is great!

I do have one question though around the electronic handbrake function, which seems to behave a little differently to how it worked in the Golf.

Previously with my Golf the handbrake would disengage automatically when pulling away, and come on automatically when the car was turned off. I did have a 'Hill Hold' button in this Golf, not sure if that makes a difference?

However, in the A3 (S-tronic) the handbrake goes off when pulling away automatically..... but doesn't seem to come on automatically when the car is turned off. Is it just you have to apply the handbrake manually in the A3? Not so much of a problem since I have 'P' with the S-tronic box anyway, just curious if this is the correct behaviour or whether there is a setting to change the default behaviour anywhere?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Yes you have to apply it manually.

Hill hold will make no difference.
It will also come on automatically if you open the drivers door with the ignition on.

My handbrake turns off when you pull away and turns back on when either you open a door, take your seat belt off or turn the ignition off. I have hold assist

This is how it worked in my Golf too, maybe it's a added feature of hold assist?

I guess it is, my parents have an A3 without hold assist and it doesn't do it on theirs, but then theirs is a year newer. Might've changed something at the factory?

I always use mine like a manual handbrake. Click it off when I move off at start of journey and put it on when I get to my destination. I never use it in between. Had a few cars with these HBs now and use them the same way. I'm S-Tronic as well.

Wouldn't rely on Park without the handbrake being applied though, parking pawl in the box isn't designed to have the vehicles weight on it all the time.

Quiet and on a steep hill I try to point the front wheels into the kerb as well...
