Who was it that said I'd never get 50mpg from the 1.4COD?

Oh yeah, last time I checked the average was 37mpg in mine, but on an A road journey I can do 50mpg... only then though, overall it's 37!

I'm 3000k miles run-in now after nearly 5 months (clearly neither of us drive much...).

My long-term comp is showing a bit better than yours - 40mpg though recently I've done a lot of motorway driving. My last journey through town...25mpg :grimacing:

The range on my DIS seems wildly random even if I'm consistently doing town driving for days/weeks. I live about 2 miles drive from my office but somehow I scrub off nearly 10 miles from the range every time I feel lazy and drive to and from work. Yesterday in the morning I had 320 miles of range, got home and it was 310!

On the weekend I did an hour on the M25 and a long A-Road near East Grinstead - managed to get over 50mpg!

Keeping your speed down to 70mph makes a huge difference with this engine. Doing 80 results in 42mpg...doing 70 results in 56mpg.

Town driving + AC brought it down to 53 by the time I took the photo...but it was 56!

This is why I wish Audi didn't foolishly not include COD and Eco Mode on all their A3 cars.

Can you imagine how much better MPG the 1.8TFSI and 2.0TFSI engines could get with those features.

2.0T already gets 24/33Hwy , Eco Mode would probably give it 40MPG on the highway, and COD would probably add more.

Gasoline engines could be fuel savvy as much as Diesel and both could give Hybrids a run for their money if all car manufactures decided to make most out Petro/gasoline cars.

Normal consumption for me is low 40's, I've had one run from Witney to Heathrow early in the morning, cruising 70-75 and achieved 54mpg. Best ever is a trip to Coventry from Witney, mainly on the Fosse Way, stuck behind lorries so cruising at 50mph, got 57mpg

I know it's unrealistic to expect to achieve the official mpg figures, but I am slightly peeved that I so far haven't managed to achieve the official 60mpg combined figures on the DIS.

The best I managed was 59mpg driving around 15 miles on the A12, Blackwall Tunnell and A2 (all 40 and 50mph zones) before turning off.

I just couldn't crack 60.

As for true measured mpg from a tank of fuel, the best is 47mpg which we've got twice now. The last time we got over 500 miles from the tank. I think 50mpg is achievable but not a realistic expectation.

Having initially been disappointed with the indicated average 39mpg from our 1.4 COD, even when driving very sensibly (read ****** boring) I started logging it on fuelly.com to see how accurate the DIS was.

Over the course of 3 fill-ups, I was delighted to see that we were actually getting 47mpg as an average. That's more like it! Chuffed at that, I began to wonder why the DIS was so far out from the actually mpg, when it dawned on me... fuelly was working in US gallons, not imperial gallons :whistle2:

Back to being disappointed, but giving up on mpg and just trying to enjoy the drive :racer:

I've managed over 60mpg on my regular 15 mile commute and several times even managed >65mpg. But this was when it had only done a few thousand miles. Now I struggle to get mid 50's on the same journey
I thought the mpg improved with mileage, but I guess not.

I have seen over 60mpg on a combined run quite easily, and I think that the cod tech will be used on the replacement 1.5 engine for the 1.4 http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/golf/94276/volkswagen-to-introduce-all-new-15-litre-engines and possibly the 2.0l replacement for the 1.8...

Any minute now, you're going to be accused of lying, or coasting your car downhill with the engine switched off :p
Ahhh, those were the days, how times on this forum have changed!

Lol, wait for it, nope always set to average and, without any long runs, it seems permanently stuck on 42mpg on my commute..

My image above is at the end of my commute, early in the morning and hardly any traffic. A single journey average mpg readout. 10 miles of motorway and the remainder A roads.
No coasting involved and no cruise control as this kills the mpg, just careful steady driving.
My long term average over 14k miles now is about 48mpg. Yes I like a spirited drive occasionally, just not when going to work.
Like I said I can't seem to get much above 55mpg these days and yet I feel my driving style hasn't changed.

I can't even achieve that in efficiency mode, and I also have the issue that I fall asleep before reaching my destination, haha

2 months in to ownership, both my wife and I are a bit bored with the car. I've never felt so disconnected from the engine/road and the interior rattles more than my 16yr old M Coupe. Bought in haste due to previous vehicle being written off by a wagon and it'll do for a while, but I don't think it's the long-termer we thought it might have been

I've given up on trying to get decent MPG from my car. If I was in your situation, I'd do the same and just drive it like you want to.

These days (7000 miles in) I get 25mpg in town, 35 on B/A roads and 45 on a motorway. Can't improve on that unless I drive like a hyper-miler.

Hahahaha reading above from an old comment, you said you had done 3k miles "so neither of us drive much"

Your 7k in now - i'm 5.4k :congratulatory: - 1 year and 2 months old lol

I admit, I only drive mine for enjoyment and the odd time when I really have to. yet to drive down Cornwall one day to see some family. 1,000 mile round trip will do it good :p

Mines just hit 10600 in twenty four and half months and thinking about a p/x for an A4...

Lol! Wow...I remember posting that.

I honestly cannot believe that I've done 7,000 miles in just over 9 months. 4000 of those miles were in the last 4 months. So I've been doing around 1000 miles a month recently. I'm trying to understand it and just can't.

It doesn't make sense...I live 30mins walk from my office, so I don't drive to work. And I get the tube to another office if I need to. But - like spending - it's not the big things you need to keep an eye on, it's all the little things here and there. Probably all those trips to Halfords to buy more cleaning products.

Or maybe...someone has been nicking my car for a joy ride while I'm asleep, and returning it in perfect condition...

Maybe your car got bored sitting around and took itself off for some fun?

Lol, all you have to do is get the tank filled as well and you'd not be thinking about mpg..

Did a 200 mile journey from Devon to Kent yesterday - A303, M3, M25, M26, M20 and then local roads. I decided to use the E setting in Drive Select and with ACC on for most of the journey, and traffic on the M3 and M25, I achieved 57.3mpg which was my best ever. But then I did the journey in reverse today and from Kent to Fleet Services on the M3 I saw an average of 60.1 which is absolutely my best ever. But then I got held up in a traffic jam on the A303 and then just floored it so average coming home was about 53mpg.

Interestingly I think that using ACC with the E setting doesn't really achieve much because as far as I could see the car never freewheels. But if I switched ACC off and drove normally then I often saw the rev counter swing back to tick-over (and the E symbol comes up with no gear number), the car freewheels so then it does help consumption I guess. But by how much is a moot point.

I have the 2.0 TFSI 190 with 7 speed S Tronic
It's plenty fast enough for me and I have had 45mph on a gentle 40 mile A road trip.
City driving is mid 30's.
I'm really pleased with the engine / gearbox.

My old 1.8 TFSI manual averaged 41mpg on the computer over 23500 miles, working out as an actual 39mpg on fill ups. The best I had was an indicated 50mpg on a 280 mile motorway journey last year.
I've just driven my new S3 manual with 300 miles on the clock 150 motorway miles and averaged an indicated 40.6 mpg - and I wasn't trying to drive economically! The best i got out of the loaner S3 stronic saloon I had last year was 35mpg on a similar journey.

Any more info on the engine, is it refined, pull from low rpm etc.?

That doesn't make sense... but it's definitely impressive for the S3, and will get even better over time!

Engine is fabulous.
Almost as much torque as the 2.0 diesel but over a wider rev range. Still low miles so I've yet to push it but there is no need, acceleration is great without exceeding 4k revs.
Its silent on a cruise but makes a reasonable note accelerating.

Thanks, I have only driven the A4 with that engine/gearbox combo so I am interested in how the lighter car performs. I have my engine up to 170ps and around 298Nm so not too far off a 2.0...

I took this during a 100 mile drive from NE London to Aldeburgh in Suffolk in August. The traffic was pretty heavy so I didn't manage much faster than 60 the whole time.

At the end of the journey it was showing 61.3 mpg.

It would have been perfect if we had done this at 10:22pm.

Would of been perfect for my typical MPG figure mind!

Although I think you would be slightly miffed with just 22MPG

Even with 20 miles or so at 50mph with ave speed cameras it returned far better economy on the motorway than I was expecting. Even on a 35 mile 'A' road trip today in strings of traffic keeping below 4000 rpm but feeling plenty of torque out of roundabouts and a few quick overtakes, it ended up at 40mpg. The contents of the fuel tank aren't contradicting it either.
I was expecting more like 30mpg.
Think I should be complaining about the CO2 tax banding.
