Hi,

I've got a 2006 B7 3.0 Avant Auto, it's a brilliant car, still looks great, as is more than a match for much newer cars. But as it gets older there are a couple of things I'd like to improve.

The car has down 105k miles and the gearshift is pretty rubbish, especially when it's cold. Is there anything I can do to improve it? I doubt it's ever had a fluid change, but when I asked my local garage they said the box was sealed for life. Any idea?

Second question, I've got the RNSe stereo/nav. The bluetooth phone has suddenly got very quiet, the "bing" when it find my phone is quieter than it was, and phone calls are really quiet. Fiddling with the volume during a call doesn't seem to do anything. Anyone had similar?

Thanks.

I would recommend changing the oil in the gearbox highly, I had to have my gearbox rebuilt at 130k and was told it could have been prevented by changing the oil more often, oh and the rebuild is best part of £2000!

Can't comment if it will make shifts better, but it should as old gloopy oil is never your friend!

Definitely get the gearbox oil changed, mine was done at 60,000 miles and car now has 87000 miles and the gearbox is sweet as a nut. The oil change procedure is quite specific and needs to be done just right otherwise you will have problems. Either use a reputable specialist or dare I say it the dealers as they should at least know the procedure and use the correct oil and filters etc. Oil will be very very tired and past its best by 100k miles and the notion of it being sealed for life is utterly stupid on Audi's part if that what they are telling you.

Righto, oil change it is. Thanks.

Before I get ripped off, anyone got a ballpark price I should expect to pay?

From what I gather the correct oil is Very expensive but essential to use for obvious reasons, I believe ball park cost is around £200 but mine was done before I bought the car so don't know what current costs are.

Just for info, a full oil change from Audi themselves, including oil and filter, is around £600

Hells Teeth!! That's a heck of a lot. However, according to Audi UK website under the Owners section if you look up the cost for S-Tronic oil change for my car (2005 S4) its a fixed price of £175 and you can book online with your nearest Audi centre. To my mind I'd be looking up your car details on the site and see if you can score a bargain.

Had the ATF changed on my 2.5tdi Q by Audi for £150 and it does help

Yeh I've seen that, but just seems too cheap to me, just the parts alone cost £300, and the job itself takes a good couple of hours, so I am reluctant to book online until someone else has.

ALSO, the audi uk site refers to it as an s-tronic box that needs the oil changing every 38k, which is completely wrong, so reckon they've ballsed up!

£600! Cripes! That's like 10% of what the car is worth.

Will try the Audi website, might try ringing round a few dealers too.

Fixed the quiet bluetooth thing. If anyone finds this and has the same issue it's pins 6 and 12 on Connector C behind the stereo. I've recently put in a Dension Bluetooth/iPod music interface and it appears the harness wasn't quite right. Had to do some wire cutting and soldering of the Dension harness to join pins 6 and 12 on the car side quadlock directly to the stereo side. Seems to have worked a treat and I'm back to the insanely loud bluetooth that I was used to.

Right, just looked at the Audi servicing website, they have options for both S-Tronic and Multitronic when I stick my numberplate in.

Both are £175 and it estimates 1hr 6 mins for the job. That seems insanely cheap.

I'm *this* close to booking in. What do you think?

I think you'd struggle find an independent garage that would charge any less than £200 just for the labour, so you'll still be looking at £500 as the cheapest.

I was tempted to book it, but to be honest, I just dont see the point, because there is no way they will honour it (nor do they have to), but I'm not saying it isnt worth a try anyway, if you book it and they do it for you for £175, then it'll be one hell of an audi **** up, but you'll be smiling all the way home!

My 2.5tdi was done in 2011 by soton Audi for £157.Still seems good

Its a tiptronic 139k.Unplanned cos a helper undid the drain plug by mistake.I thought the box was sealed for life but research showed others disagreed .Audi hadnt got this on their menu so had to bill as a Multi service but so it all worked out in the end and maybe now they do

Ah ok, yeh, I guess they've probably noticed that in the last 5 years more and more boxes are needing oil changes, and therefore updated their costs accordingly.

Still think its worth a try booking it for £175 if you dont lose anything from it, but I cant see them going through with it.

If it were me I'd book it and then when you rock up with the car unless they say "Ah no cant do it for that price etc" then I think you probably have a good argument under the sale of goods act if when you go to pick the car up they try and sting you more than the £175. Either way got to be worth a punt.

They only drain and refill.Takes an hour and 5ltrs on mine.I think you have to take the sump off to get all the ATF out but I thought that wasnt needed on mine cos it was running OK

See thats the problem. The website says they change the filter as well, but that is for a dsg box which is easier and cheaper. SO, if it came to it, and they did do the service for that price and they dont remove the sump and change filter, its a little bit pointless.

If they don't change the filter AND you booked it via the website I think you have a good argument that that they have not done the work you contracted with them for, and get them to do the job again, changing the filter that time.

yeh, thats very true

we really need to get someone to book theirs in to find out lol, I'm still very sceptical if an Audi dealer would even entertain it, and if they dont even notice its not an s-tronic, I'd be worried if they actually have a clue what they're doing lol, but we'll see......

There is a risk that they will twig and say they have done the lot but only a drain and refill.I would rather sort it out beforehand cos they cant possibly do more for this price and clearly have made a mistake.

Morning.

Car is in getting the Transmission Oil changed as we speak.

I don't know much about this kind of thing, but one thing I did think of while I driving away in the courtesy car, are there two separate gearbox fluids? There'll be fluid in the torque converter and oil the gears sit in.

I'm now thinking it's the gearbox oil that the will change for 175 quid. The fluid in the torque converter is probably the big 500 quid job and probably the job that makes the most difference to shift quality.

Does any of that make sense? Are there two seperate oils in the gearbox?

What was the outcome in the end mate??

As for the different oils, it all uses the same sump, so it literally is oil and filter, there isnt a separate sump or anything.

Well, I've got the car back - drives fine, doesn't seem any better. Probably won't notice until the morning, when the box is cold is when it seemed most sluggish.

Thought I could smell Auto Transmission Fluid on my drive home, but there's no leaks under the car, so I think/hope it was just paranoia.

Incidentally, job was done at Huddersfield Audi, no quibbling about the price, included a courtesy car (a 400 mile old A6) and no hard sell for additional work. Only one black mark against them - they tried to tell me that my cam belt needed changing. Good luck, the 3.0tdi has a timing chain....

Oh well fingers crossed it all has been ok, but to be honest, the fact they didnt mention anything, and the fact they reckon it has a belt, I'd be a little worried to be honest. Only time will tell I guess.............

Car was better this morning. A lot less reluctant to change gears going uphill.

Sounds good Rijo. My car is a B7 3.0tdi and has done 120,000 miles and I notice sometimes the gearchange isn't as smooth as I think it should be. I'm thinking of also getting this done, but is it S tronic or Multi tronic? The online price sounds good, their £199 service charge doesn't seem bad either, I might bolt on a service at the same time.

Remembered reading this thread in Feb and tried to book my B6 S4 in for tiptronic oil and filter change at Coulsdon Audi using the online service tool for £175.

They just called me to say the tiptronic is sealed for life, and therefore cancelling my booking.

Oh well, worth a try.

Oh dear.

Its not sealed for life, but at least they've got half a brain and realised they cant honour the £175
